September Xbox 360 sales could rival Wii says Pachter |
Ó
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says that Microsoft and Bungie's Halo 3 launch will be the single biggest first day game release in history. Sales could easily hit US$ 200 million on launch date and sell 130,000 more Xbox 360s.This could place the Xbox 360 at top spot again by going toe to toe with Nintendo's red-hot commercial success Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 and the Wii are precariously close in overall sales figures, though it must be noted that the Microsoft console had a year of headway before the Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3 launched.
Microsoft is hauling in the proverbial nine yards of marketing and product extensions, sporting a deluxe edition of Halo 3 worth US$ 120, a comic book mini-series from Marvel, a new Mountain Dew variant called Game Fuel, ads on Burger King and 7-Eleven, and most recently a Halo 3 themed NASCAR paint job for David Stremme's No. 40 Dodge Charger.
"It will be the biggest first-day seller ever ... it will grow the installed base," says Pachter as he predicts some 2.5 million copies to fly off stores from the get-go. In effect, Pachter says that the September sales of the Xbox 360 game console will add up to 40,000. Hardcore fans are expected to treat the launch like a national holiday.
"It's a test for the industry on how much hype can you successfully get around a game," says X-Play host Morgan Webb as she concludes that this is a big event not only for Microsoft and Halo fans but for the business as a whole.

FIRST POST :) there's no way that there is 130'000 halo fans that don't have a 360 jet . now if halo 3 sell 50'000 360's that would be more reasonable .
if theres one thing ive learned its pachter is a moron and knows nothing. and if hes about to be proven wrong he'll "revise" his statement.
Morgan Webb is a "he?"
Sorry 'bout that. Kinda slipped through. It's corrected now. No offense intended, Morgan. O.o
how come i haven't read any reviews about Halo 3 this close to launch??? any other game (recent examples are Lair, Heavenly Sword, Bioshock) has had reviews already a week or two prior to launch to help educate the gaming market about the game's pros and cons.... we got to learn how difficult the controls of Lair are, how good Bioshock is, how wicked Heavenly Sword can be... but with Halo... nothing.
reviews should start coming out soon. the press was able to play the entire game a couple days ago and Microsoft said that the press could release there reviews and stuff the week of launch.
All of those games you mentioned, and you said this yourself, had reviews posted about one week from release. Well, Halo 3 is a week away, so I don't really see the difference. Anyway, Bungie has confirmed that reviewers have played the game, and since that was a few days ago, they probably have their impressions all written up and ready to be posted once whoever gives the green light. And actually, looking back at reviews of Halo 2 through MetaCritic reveals that most of the major ones (ie IGN, GameSpot, 1UP) were all posted on Nov. 7, 2004, two days before the game came out. So there seems to be a set date where all the major sites are allowed to post their Halo reviews. I'd expect Halo 3 reviews to be up either Sat or Sun. And this year it appears only OXM will have the issue with the H3 review timed to deliver just before the game starts selling. I got my last OXM about four weeks ago, so that puts delivery of the H3 issue just before the game comes out, whereas I got my latest EGM and GameInformer only a few days ago, so they'll be almost a month late with the H3 review.
They sign wavers and get to play the game earlier and prepare their reviews for release 2 days prior to launch. Except for some reason Famitsu have already done their review. It got a 37/40.
So the two days before release embargo is true for Halo 3 as well, which means reviews will be posted this Sunday, the 23rd. And yeah, I just saw all the news of the Famitsu review. A 10/9/9/9 for 37/40, or 92.5 out of 100. Amazing for an FPS in Japan, even though that's the same score Halo 2 got.
