Sega's Steinberg: Wii hype will end soon

Despite its current soaring popularity in the market, Sega's Scott Steinberg believes that Nintendo Company Ltd.'s ever-popular Wii console will lose its hype next year.

While the Wii is now leading the games industry with its attractive price and the unique gameplay provided by the controller (among other interesting features), the console's sub-par graphics compared to next-gen consoles as well as lack of any special technological specs may weigh it down in the long run, Sega's top brass explained.

"I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool... I'm not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007," Steinberg said in an interview. He goes on to explain that the Nintendo Wii will be eventually left behind as soon as game developers make even better games on the PlayStation 3 and on the Xbox 360.

At this point, game developers are devoting more and more resources for Nintendo Wii games, now that the quirky console is at the height of its popularity. Electronic Arts, for one, has decided to make more Wii games while Ubisoft is set to make exclusive Wii games.

Sega has a surprising choice when asked who will turn out to be the winner of the console wars in the long run: Sony's PlayStation 3. Right now, Sony PlayStation 3 is flagging behind its two rivals, Wii and Xbox 360. Even its handheld console sister, the PSP, is outdone by another of Nintendo's strange products, the touchscreen kid-friendly DS.

Sega believes that the PS3's graphical power and Blu-ray DVD player will make it a staple for 10 years, and will provide just enough juice for the game developers to tinker with and be satisfied for a long time.

Wow, you have no clue what gaming is about. You are 15... When I was 15, nintendo was dominating with a GOOD system. The SNES. A true hardcore gaming system. Nintendo has sold out and only the new fans, like yourself like the Wii along with older people and casuals. I personally wanted blu-ray and it was one of the minor reasons to own a ps3. The other reason is that its Sony, who has the best games. There will be no PS3 without blu-ray. MGS already is too big to fit on 360 and its a 2nd generation game. Imagine what games will be like in 5 years? You'll be playing the xbox 720 because the 360 needs a bigger medium for its games. So enjoy buying another $400 system while im playing my PS3 with its 100+ exclusives. If I were you, i'd get my work permit and hit up mcdonalds and start saving and pickup a ps3.

The fact that games developers are making games for the system means consoles are going to be sold, if consoles are sold then games will be sold, which pleases developers and intices them to make more games, and so the cycle repeats.

If crap graphics consoles can't make it then the PS2 should of died long ago.

But the DS PSP thing shows that people arent as bothered about the graphics as some developers think, and they like the quirky features like the touchscreen and the Wiimote.

Obviously there's some differences between the handheld and console markets, but not enough that the Wii's going to drop within the next year or so. It really is too early to tell how it's going to do, so all these guys saying it's going to die a painful death, or that it's going to slaughter MS and Sony need to just shut up for a while. Watch what's happening, and make predictions when it's got a steady sales figure instead of just Nintendos output.

I've gotta ask though, was there really any need to try take a dig at the DS with the "kid friendly" comment? Because there's no way that could have been used in that context to give it a compliment on how it's doing or anything.

I'd like to see the massive power of the two big consoles put to making a huge game with good graphics rather than a piddling 10hr waste of time with the flashiest graphics they can squeeze in.

The Wii has the right idea in trying to promote gameplay over graphics but it's a wasted opportunity unless game publishers start thinking the same way. Until then we're just going to see cut down versions of the 'big' games or poorly realised exclusives, where basically the same game styles are created to fit a lesser piece of hardware. IE the flashiest graphics they can squeeze in, relegating the bit that's left to making a 10hr (or less!?) game.

I hope the Wii wins because what they are trying to do is the only way the gaming industry can really go. The costs of producing the current graphical masterpieces are rapidly becoming prohibitively expensive to produce and if it continues, the games we see are going to be nothing more than a 21st century version of the CD's mighty FMV (awesome to look at but not a lot to do) because no company can afford to take risks.

The Wii looks to be on a winning run atm simply because it's so cheap but if they don't start providing the games showing the gaming industry the light, then it'll sputter and die over the long term when everyone realises that they've got nothing more than half of a 'real' console.

Sorry Wii fanboys but Wii initself is basically an enhanced version of Gamecube. With no "jawdropping" visuals. Like the visuals you see on Ps3 and 360.

Now, you may want to ask yourselves one thing Wii fanboys;

Can Wii have the following games?

- Final Fantasy XIII

- Final Fantasy Versus XIII

- Time Crisis 4

- Tekken 6

and for 360

- Ace Combat 6

for PS3/360

- Ace Combat 4

- Dark Sector

- The Last Remnant

and many other titles like it?

The answer is; no. Only the PS3 and 360 can deliver these photo-realistic (life-like) visuals.

And I also used to think that Wii was worthwhile. But from playing the PS3 demos -- I thought wrong.

Game design can't continue on it's current path. It's simply not sustainable. Very few companies are willing to step away from making twists on the 3d action game because if they fail, they go bust.

The Wii has the right idea but as i said before, unless real, entertaining games are developed and not just a slew of shallow, gimmicky minigames or shoehorning a 360/PS3 game in, then the Wii is just as bad.

It's also why my first line mentioned the wish that the 360 and PS3 would use all that power to make bigger, more intricate games, rather than generic tripe with the latest graphic bells and whistles.

Some of these developers need to get some creativity, make a deeeeeep game and set the graphic bar back a halfstep. It'll still look fantastic and be a much better game for it.

STALKER is a great example (although ultimately they took too long and took most of it back out) of how deep a game could be if someone had the balls to do it. Taking the generic FPS, using an older graphics engine and packing it with other game mechanics to produce something different. It doesn't look as hot as the latest games but it's putting the system's power to use where it really matters.

Production costs always jump when a new generation is introduced. Over time though improved tools reduce costs again. Two generations ago you were pretty much stuck paying to create a whole game engine from the ground up. Now you can license solid engines, and packages like Havok or Speedtree, and as system power grows specialized things like motion capture become cheaper as well. About the only thing that hasn't gotten cheaper is the creation of quality art assets.

I think you neglect the fact that the game industry is about expression and art as well as entertainment. An underpowered system like the Wii can be a huge barrier to expression and exploring new game ideas. The extra power is how we are ending up with cool things liek Super Rub-a-Dub and Little Big World.

One point you make that I haven't seen is that once MS stops support of the 360, a trend that WILL continue just like the original XBOX, all of the PS3's games will be exclusive and unlike the XBOTS love to say the PS3 has plenty of power to flaunt well into the future due to the cell processor.

Win, lose, or draw the PS3 is here to stay and IT IS THE REAL DEAL! I could care less about overall sales as long as I get good games to play and BD movies to watch!

Hardly! It is harder to make games for but not impossible! The reason that I state that is because your comment about the 360 having better graphics currently is true. The reason for this is the due to the ease in making games for the 360 they are already using the majority of it's ability. The flaw in your "spot on" is that you aren't planning for when the developers understand the cell well enough to implement it's graphic processing abilities in real time. It's either that or you just don't understand how ground breaking the cell really is. When you do then come talk to me about which system has better graphics, more intelligent and advanced AI, and greater capabilities for games AND multimedia entertainment!

i own all 3 systems as well. I had initially bought the 360 last year and was impressed since i have been a die hard sony fan for life. I was merley buying time befor ethe ps3 came out. I didnt bother getting the wii at launch but the ps3,, i was so hyped but quickly i found out the ps3 was one big paperweight! I thought the 360 was better in every way! boy was i dissapointed paying so much for it. Then i noticed all my friends were buying the wii. Then i played trhe wii and my jaw dropped, inside its tiny and cheap little machine was actually a new concept in gaming. I went out and bought one right away with a handful of games. The only sytem i am playing right now is the wii while the 360 and ps3 collect dust. I cant believe sony with the crap they put out. overpriced overhyped nothing new junk! i was a big original nintendo nes fan but sony stole me away, now nintendo has stole me back. I guarantee you that I know way more about the cell than you because I actually research my purchases instead of buying the first thing, no matter how rushed it was, put in front of my face. You really should research the cell yourself it would save you from looking so ignorant when you post.

What is the whole creativity thing? Let me tell you what it's about! It's about streaming media, PSP connectivity, HD movie formats, Folding@Home, and the list goes on. Do you have any ideas how useful a streaming media client could be for music and videos at a party or other group event. The cell wasn't made for the present it WAS MADE FOR THE FUTURE. Hence its difficulty in programming for and the new dev tools and new from the ground up compilers. Your blatant ignorance doesn't change that.

i laugh at all u people dissin the wii, cuz its getting more popular than other consoles. so shove it up ur a**** a bit more, cuz i aint. and for any one wondering why people want a wii? its cuz half the ******* planet bought the ps2, and ps3 is just the same *****t but better graphics. i dont care how much better they are, if the games are some 4hr to beat **** then **** that. and there arent any games right now on ps3 that i want. if you think nintendo is repetative take a look at sony. its always got some other media thing in it (honostly i have never liked them cuz the system always is louder than the movie) a controller with something, someone else made, and beter graphics. armored core 4? same as 3, metal gear solid 4? not the last in the series, just "pretends" to be (try stickin a Going out of buisness sign infront of a store, every one stops to have a look) and all the other games ive seen are just shiny and have som 90% naked chick on it. Its been the same thing every *******console and ive just gotten tired of it. Besides the fact that every ps console ive owned was **** and stopped working after 3 years.

The only way soney is going to win is by making crapyier versions of the ps3 and when they break people will buy another one.

I do however like the xbox 360 because it has built in music, a good selection of new games (halo seems a bit repetitive if they keep going with the series, but it is fun.) and the online (even if u do have to pay) is pretty good.

now other people will ask "why do you like all the new games for wii like smash bros?! its got just upgraded visuals" well the answer to that would be its getting more items, eaiserier controles, more characters and newer levels, And most likely online play. Not to mention, a new way to play the game.

see, there are some good games for wii. and there are about the same number for ps3. but when it comes down to it. what happens when a parent buys a wii for the family, and the kid has never played a game before. well hell play the regular ones for casuals, but hell want something better, so hell go for the hardcore games. now imagine the family didnt buy one because they didnt want 1 or just wanted a ps3, well the parents wont pay for the whole god dam thing so they'll make the kid buy half of it, ( ive had a couple friednss have to ) and when he does, we wont know what games to get, and when he does play them, he wont have the experience. nuff said thats my rant and i dont give a ***** bout how u guys think its "girly" cuz if u own a "manly" ps3, the girls wont want to play it with you cuz it was ment for hardcore gamer guys.

so guess whos got the girls now?

Why are you asking what the PS3 ever got for hype? Are you joking. If you were to ask pretty much anyone in 2005 which would be the best system, they would say the PS3. It printed Hype like the DS prints money. It just collapsed when they didnt deliver everything they ever promised in the first 6 months of its life (oh no!). Give it time.

I can see the Wii slowing down significantly next year. And i see the PS3 on top, just wait for E3, you'll see.

While i see your point, the DS also only had the PSP for competition. The PSP was significantly more expensive, and had bad PS2 ports (but i still love my PSP).

The Wii came out last (couple days after the PS3) and has had most of its businness from causuals (probably 70%). As soon as they stop buying it won't have much of a business with the PS3 and 360 on the market, continually being improved.

The Wii is the choice of consoles this time around mainly because of price, if MS drop the core system to the Wii price and put the premium in second and the Elite as top of the range this could seriously challenge the Wii.

But its not really about console sales anyway its about attachment rate of games etc and MS is defnatly winning this one and of course it has Xbox live which people are happy to pay for because its quality.

Overall the Wii will cary on outselling the 360 but MS will make more overall from software etc I cant really see where the PS3 can make money here apart from their Habo hotel copy (HOME) where they will proberly charge for pretending furniture etc....

I respect you opinion, but i feel (in general) that people need to give more time to the PS3. By the end of this year, there are going to be a plethora of awesome PS3 games, and several of them exclusive. Its only been out 6 months people! What did the Xbox 360 have in the first 6 motnhs? Or before Gears of War for that matter. A couple good games, right, just like the PS3.

look the xbox360 is winning as of now w/ around 10 million more or less, it has great online and good games but its been out for over a year and only has 10 millions sold and most game r starting to seem like copies, so many shooting nonetheless their is still halo 3

the wii has sold around 8 mil its control are great which has worked out well and has brought many new followers and its still not a year yet and alright has 8 milm more than the 360 had at that age and much more in than the ps3. But it lacks good games except for zelda and two others and its not to powerful a machine but still has promise alot and will sell more as soon as ssbb mario galaxy etc comes out

the ps3 is pure power and then are not real good games out yet only ff and mgs4 in the future and kingdom hearts will come out again at some point but that it, it has tanked in sells only around 3 mil and most reason ppl buy it is because it is the cheapest blu-ray player that it. it probably wont even come closer to the 360 and wii

in my eyes the wii will win this time around , sony cant hope to win twice and the only fight is going to be b/w the wii and 360 but it doesnt matter if the 360 doesnt win, 2nd place is still good and bill gates is still rich and nintendo has comeback

Totally agree, sony have fuct it! By the time the price of the ps3 drops and it reaches its full potential (in about 3-5 years time) microsoft and nintendo will be releasing there next next gen consoles. The ps3 will be dated before its had a chance to conquer!
