Sega's Steinberg interview reveals why Virtua Fighter 5 PS3 is not online

Scott Steinberg - Image 1Virtua Fighter enthusiasts know why the PlayStation 3 version of the video game Virtua Fighter 5 lacked online gameplay: lag problems hamper Virtua Fighter's combat system. An interview with Sega's Scott Steinberg though revealed another reason for the dismal lack of online fun.

According to Steinberg, Sega wanted to release the Virtua Fighter 5 PS3 SKU within the PS3's launch window, leaving out the online multiplayer that the Xbox 360 version enjoyed.

Certainly not a delightful news for PlayStation 3 owners. When asked why the Xbox 360 got the online multiplayer option despite the lag problems that also plagued the PS3 SKU, Steinberg said that AM2 - also known as Sega Amusement Machine Research and Development Department 2 - felt that they can do online gaming with the 360, and managed to come up with online multiplayer with almost unnoticeable lag. He continued:

I think they felt like, "hey, letÂ’s surprise the world" (referring to AM2). ThatÂ’s how it all kind of came down, so it was one of those great, just serendipitous kinds of moments where it happened and we werenÂ’t expecting it.

So there you have it, the skinny on why Virtua Fighter 5 for the PlayStation 3 didn't have online multiplayer according to Steinberg himself, but he didn't close the interview with this.

Remember Steinberg's apparent doubts about the Wii, and how he managed to take it back? He just wants people to know that Sega is not being partial to any of the consoles, and if ever, they're focusing more on PC games nowadays. Steinberg mused:

ThatÂ’s the other thing that was heresy three or four years ago for Sega. To be on the PC was looked at as "one of these things is not like the other," and the reality is that over the last three years weÂ’ve made a big effort to go on the PC with a measured approach, RTS being our major focus.

It's not a big surprise that Sega is now reaching out to the PC market as well. Sega, which has an almost equal distribution of games across the current platforms, is now viewing the PC games market just as viable as the console market.

And finally, Sega is now out to take over the world. According to Steinberg, Sega's goal is to expand in the three major regions (North America, Europe, and Japan) to participate equally in studio development. He reasoned, "That will probably never mathematically work out to be right, but the goal is to diversify and make sure that weÂ’re covering our bases."

So is Sega conquering the New Worlds now? "So the Sega imperial strategy is proof positive that itÂ’s working and once we add Sudetenland weÂ’ll be on our way," Steinberg said in jest. It should be noted that most of Sega's franchises that were created in Japan are now developed in the West, such as Sega Rally Revo (PS3, PC, Xbox 360), Nights: Journey of Dreams, and Shadow the Hedgehog.

The real reason is they don't want to pay to run the server like sony forces them to. Also lag issues that would make a fighting game suck.

only if Hitler had of been allowed to finish his dream.

» Surprise?

If they really wanted to surprise the world they would add into patching the PS3 version to add online play.

by Roy jones - 2007-07-31 02:15
» unfortunately

thats pretty much impossible as you cant change a whole lot with a patch, quite a bit of code would have to be changed.

» I Say, I Say Buew Shete

They could have made online play if they wanted to but they took the cheap way out. The game sucks anyway compared to Soul Calibur and Tekken. The acting is horrible also. Very cheap for next gen. It seemed like a rushed product.

by heath - 2007-07-31 02:44
» maybe because the ps3 online sucks

Just because it's free doesn't mean it works well. Xbox live is the best there is at the moment and that is the bottom line.

ps3's online doesnt suck although as of now it doesnt come close to matching the 360's xbox lvie. I think hes jsut full of bs when he says it would be laggy. Resistance has betetr gfx and at 40 players i get no lag at all.

» Bull*****

I call bull*****. This guy is lying through his damned teeth. They added online for VF5 to 360 because MS gave them a bag of money. They said online play was impossible... then they add it anyway... "with no noticable lag" on the 360. That is bull*****. MS's servers are no better than Sony's and actually, Sony's don't lag, while a lot of times you will find that MS's do...

Like Mikey says Psn can handle 40 players online [even with my WiFi connection].

I think this is a good example of how the xbox360 is a better/eazer platform to develop for..........develpoers can do more in less time with a symmetrical CPU. And good online code (xlive)!!!! .............PS3 game devlopers spen a lot of time just trying to get there code to run @30fps on a A-symmetrical CELL-CPU....... BTW intel high end quad cores are allready more powerfull....

by jay - 2007-07-31 06:43
» yeah the ps3 online is actually good

no lag resistance or motorstorm.

by TNC-Menace - 2007-07-31 07:37
» Blah blah blah

Stop talking technical jargon when you have no idea what it means Tekken is a beat em up right? its going to be online for ps3 right so "good online code" in what respect? Sega are just making excuses cos Billy gave them a little extra lint to develop online multiplayer for 360 peroid.

I agree I play Resistance Online with my Wi-Fi connection and I get no lag at all.

still sad that i can't play my favorite fighting game online on my ps3. maybe when the 360 verison is 20 bucks and there is still (or if ever) a good online community, I'll cop that version also. VF may have no sotry and horrible voice acting, but the gameplay is the most addictive I've played. People who hate on the game suck at it.

Online can be patched with ease, many 360 games have done so. The earliest being Kameo.

RFoM is nothing revolutionary like you think. I know coming from a ps2 to a ps3 is a huge leap since last gen ps2 had the worst graphics and now ps3 has the second worst graphics (Wii is worst of course), but the textures in RFoM look like Xbox 1 textures (look at Ninja Gaiden, it uses much of the same textures. all they added was cutscenes and rachael). The bricks in the walls on RFoM dont even have correct 3D texture, its just a flat wall. Even Perfect Dark Zero had normal and bump mapping for its walls!!

Also, 40 players online is nothing new to consoles either. Xbox had a few games with 50+ players, Black Hawk Down being one of them.

And you're saying that Live has no lag?

by Um - 2007-07-31 09:44
» ...

I agree with you somewhat. They did take the cheap way out but I don't think the game sucks. In fact, I love VF... I hope that Sega does come out with a PS3 patch, not for online - lag is too big an issue to be downplayed, but for the Revision C updates and extra items.

The game won't be lag free, but it will be playable online, so thats a bonus for 360 owners I guess.

» Awake now..

Hopefully I can type coherently now.

Game assets like video, models, textures, and sound tend to be the largest portion of any game. The executeable portion tends to be very small by comparison. I'd be surpised if the executable was even 0.1GB of space.

not as much as the ps3

What 360 game supports over 40 players online on the same stage.

i prefer tekken instead, there're getting online to. virtual fighter 5 sounds boring. -_-

I didn`t buy this game because of this silly thing.

i mean it`s not that hard to provide the online play feature in your game but i think that some bouth it from Sega !?

I wish Sega could make another good Sonic game. It's been years since they've made one that doesn't suck ass. How about a good sonic exclusive for next gen systems? Please?

by 5678-Jump - 2007-07-31 17:47
» That doesn't matter

"What 360 game supports over 40 players online on the same stage."

Whilst AoxomamoxoA is a fanboy, he is right that XBL had games with this number online last gen, therefore is should be obvious that if it could be done last gen, it could just as easily be done this gen! The fact that their aren't any games on the 360 demonstrating this YET is not the point, afterall, besides Resistance, which other PS3 game has 40 players online? So games with this number of players online is not the standard for PS3 games, it's the exception.

The number of players online depends on MANY factors, which is why most games have support for far fewer players online on both consoles. Resistance was able to push it up to 40, most games will offer up to 16 at best.

by Straight Up Hatin - 2007-07-31 21:19
» Liar...

I wonder what ever happened to the game not being online possible...developers really need to learn to just shut up and make games rather than make comments that make them look like no good liars...

» who cares!!!

Who cares Tekken Dark resurrection is online and so is Tekken 6..............VF never really sold in the west anyway . Most VF were Japanese anyway (VF wouldnt sell in Japan on 360 ...haha!...3000 consoles sold a week)

As for Lag on xbox live I sincerely hope you check on DOA 4 and Street fighter Turbo ..... both very laggy!!

Lag is dependent on bandwidth of the internet ...so stfu xbox fantards
