Sega prez: Sonic to go MIA for make-over treatment

Sonic makeover?- Image 1Yep, you read the title right. We won't be seeing Sonic for quite some time in the future. When talking about the recent announcement of the Nintendo-Sega collaboration, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sega president Simon Jeffery told Newsweek that they're planning to give their blue hedgehog a bit of a make-over, meaning no new Sonic titles in the near future.

We are actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character. Sonic on the Wii is probably the first product that's come to market that reflects that. We're not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again. At the same time, even the recent 360 and PlayStation 3 games have sold extremely well.

Reinvent Sonic, eh? Wonder how that's going to end up. Well, they already have started going back to "the original Sonic" with Sonic and the Secret Rings. I say that's actually a good start. Of course, before you give someone some make-over, you'd have to revisit your roots first. It's going to be interesting to see how they will "make Sonic contemporary again" though.

We fished the picture above from a Neoseeker forums thread on Sonic art. Well, let's just hope that "Sonic In a Dress" remains as a fan's concept art, and not make it to the final drafts of Sega. (pink looks sooo good on blue though)

» contemporary? HA!!

The last time they tried to 'reinvent' Sonic, we got 'Shadow the Hedgehog'.

SEGA CEO: "I know what we can do: Give Sonic GUNS! The kids will love him!"

Seriously, 'The Secret Rings' was a backwards-step in the right direction.

» Finish a old Sonic Game

I wonder if we could see Sonic X-treme come out of this

When I saw that game for the Sega Saturn the game looked sweet. I wonder if they (SEGA) made the game in 3D if it would be cool.

» Original Sonic Please!!!

I enjoyed the ideas set forth in the original Sonic games. The idea of a hedgehog stepping up to save his friends with attitude that was not in a goofy sense and more of a hyper serious nature was what made the original so intriguing. I hope the best for the outcome of future games of the franchise.

» sonic sucks

I had sonic for the PS3... I even got it for free. I still returned it :) It was the worst game I've ever played.

Sonic REALLY needs to be reinvented, and next time try to make a game that is playable. How can they say it sells well? It's the lowest rated ps3 game.

» 2D plane

I don't know what developers have against 2D graphics sonic has not been the same since it went 3D, I don't see what is wrong with a 2D sonic game with next gen graphics, I just got an idea a 3D sonic game but you play on a 2D plane (like little big planet) and make the boss fights in full 3D I think that is the best approach or have parts of the game full 3D, the boss fights were awesome though in the sonic adventure games.

» Sonic....ReInvented?

Well, this looks promising. I don't really have a good background on Sonic since i have just recently picked up on it. The first Sonic game I played was the origional...After a while I just let it go and just recently (past few years) The 3-D titles including Sonic DX, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, etc. Excluding Secret Rings....Thats the worst Game I ever played...PERIOD! Now for reinventing...Looking back, how we got shadow...Thats kinda funny, give Sonic guns and let him drive. And instead of running, lets have him on roller shoes. That game, Shodow the Hedgehog, was fun, but it lacked story and time. I finished that game in three hours, and it bored me to hell. Now as for "new" sonic games for the future.. Halleluja! I'm a little bored of Sonic, and I personally think our spikey blue friend needs to take a running break.

Thanks for reading this it took a while to write....and read.

» Secret rings..Worst? ROFLMAO

You must be some kinda sarcasm expert , secret rings is by far a billion times beter than shadow the hedgehog and sonic the hedgehog (360 , ps3 version).

Sonic Adventure is the only 3d game that can even contest secret rings, we don't need sega reading feedback like this or we will end up with another terrible shadow the hedgehogesque game.

Congratulations on being able to stand 3 hours of shadow the hedgehog though.
