And yet even more (online) publications are rolling out their "best of 2008" lists. Following the rather compromising list from Time Magazine comes another one from Seattle Times. Though the list seems questionable of their credibility in video games evaluation (well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, right?), the awards they've given out are still well-deserved of the games they've listed.

Seattle Times' list stays on the safe side because their it doesn't necessarily claim itself to be the end-all for all "best of" lists. Their lineup is rather distilled to focus on just some... very specific aspects of gaming. With only five categories to go with, the games to choose from is limited.
  • Most Improved: Rock Band 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, Wii)
  • Best Atmosphere: Fallout 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
  • Best for Kids: Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  • Best Nonconformist: Wii Fit (Wii)
  • Best Embrace of Our Inner Weirdo: Spore (PC, Mac, spin-off on DS)
If they decided to name games for other unconventional categories (maybe something like "Most Underrated", "Most Patched due to Development Bugs", "Most Controversial Song Used in a Game", or "Best for Adults and Cause for Jack Thompson's Demise"), then maybe we would have seen the likes of GTA4 and other "best of" staples somewhere in there.

You can read Seattle Times' full descriptions of their evaluation of how this or that game won their respective award through the Via source link below.

Meanwhile, we're currently in the process of drafting our very own "best of" list too (I say "in the process" because boohoo for me - I haven't submitted my draft to Chris C. yet *facepalm*). Watch out for that in the coming days. We'll be pulling out some surprises for sure.

» is that a joke?

Those aren't the best videogames at all..

Most Improved: Rock Band 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, Wii)

It's a music game (casual game), and it's the same as rockband 1, with different musics...

Best Atmosphere: Fallout 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)

A game for the fans of oblivion and that's all

Best for Kids: Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

good casual game, but still a casual game

Best Nonconformist: Wii Fit (Wii)

It's not even a game...

Best Embrace of Our Inner Weirdo: Spore (PC, Mac, spin-off on DS)

Spore wasn't impressive at all. It had good potential but didn't really succeed...

I'm not impressed by the list, lol. It's nothing this list.

PS: Even if 2k8 had really great titles like resistance 2, valkyria chronicles, gears of war 2, prince of persia 4, left 4 dead, mirror's edge, persona 4, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, metal gear solid 4, little big planet, Alone in the Dark: Inferno, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Eternal Sonata, bioshock (those on ps3), Dead Space, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, Soul Calibur 4, Banjo-Kazooie (ok, this one is lame), GTA4, devil may cry 4, lost odyssey, mass effect (PC), Tales of Vesperia, infinite undiscovery, the last remnant, burnout paradise, etc etc, I'm forgetting half (at least) of the good ones. 2k9 will still get the best out of my wallet, with AT LEAST 10 times more or better games :D. Like FF13, white knight chronicles, star ocean 4 for exemples, lol.

» Pay attention...

The categories fit the games perfectly. Plus, I've never played Oblivion a single day in my life, but still think Fallout 3 was the best game I've played all year. As for Wii Fit "not being a game" that's why it's listed as non-conformist. I do agree with Rock Band 2 not being most improved, I'd give that to MGS4 (would be Gears 2 if multiplayer didn't suck).

» what

rock band 2 did not have any improvements over the first one

» GH World Tour

If either music game has improved itself, it is definitely guitar hero world tour. They took Rock Band's idea and made it better.

It's nice to play Bass and actually feel like you're not just playing a dumbed down version of the guitar.
