Scarborough Research - consumer market research across the United States - Image 1Brought to you by the curious consumer research minds at Scarborough Research, the investigation they conducted found that Salt Lake City, Utah is the number one local U.S. market for game console-equipped homes.

Lexington, Kentucky and Flint, Michigan also follow behind to form the top three U.S. game console markets. The numbers seem to coincide with Nielsen Media's own findings for the most part. The top ten list for the markets around the U.S. that "got game" are:
  1. Salt Lake City: 32%
  2. Lexington: 30%
  3. Flint/Saginaw/Bay City: 30%
  4. Toledo: 30%
  5. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton: 29%
  6. Norfolk/Portsmouth/Newport News: 29%
  7. Indianapolis: 28%
  8. Green Bay/Appleton: 28%
  9. Atlanta: 28%
  10. Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto: 28%
Also, Wal-Mart gets mentioned as the most popular retail for video game households. No surprise, it's been hogged for months with people looking for the Wii. It's also the number one retail in Salt Lake City, too. This comes with a close-call count with Best Buy who snags second best with Target way behind at third. The top five audio/video stores for game console-equipped households stand at:
  1. Wal-Mart: 33%
  2. Best Buy: 30%
  3. Target: 16%
  4. Circuit City: 15%
  5. Radio Shack: 7%

Now we know where all the video console hoggers are at. For all those who think they've got their game on, the folks down over Salt Lake City got more.

Oops!

Looks like someone should reword their article since those percentages are per capita meaning 32% of Salt Lake City population is gamers. Since New York, Houston, LA, etc are have much larger populations, the smaller percentages could very well be be equal to more gamers than Salt Lake City has, meaning more consoles would be sold in the higher population areas.

Um.... Excuse me?

I'm from Salt Lake City and I do admit while there are many People here who are LDS (mormon), It's not completly mormon. We haven't had a mormon mayor for who knows how long.. Besides that I will confirm the percentage. There are a TON of gamers here, while not nearly as much as bigger cities (As one of the below posts states) the percentage of the population is much higher.

yeah agreed

what if the town only has a population of 1000 families, and each household have a console, it will mean that the town is 100 percent console household BUT with such small number, it will not even reach the 28% that Atlanta has.

strange

i find this really hard to believe, i live just north of salt lake city and im pretty tuned in with the community. there are never a lot of people at the halo/smash tournaments, and when i worked at target there wasn't a HUGE demand for wii's or ps3's either. last time i checked both consoles are campin out on the shelf. Also way back when, there was another article saying that seattle was the city that had, "the most game".

SLC - Mormons don't play video games

All the gamers I know here in the SLC valley have all of the systems.....I got Wii(modded) XBOX(modded) 360(modded) PSP (modded) and a PS3. Argggg just a bunch of Pirates here in Utah.

Mormons lol

Look at Las Vegas holy crap i dont know what Salt Lake is like with how many mormons and so on but Las Vegas is crowded with them
by - 2007-03-17 12:25:29
not really.

That doesn't really mean anything, Just that the gamers here arent social... or they don't have super smash brothers. I'm always involved in the halo/Gears of war tournaments in the SL Valley. And I can agree with you partly... PS3 demand wasn't high, but Wii demand was HUGE. I had to have a friend that works at Gamestop hide one for me when they got some in.
