Final Fantasy IV - Image 1 Rumors coming in late February until early this month spoke of, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, direct sequel to the 1991 Squaresoft original. After a press release from the publisher, we can now make like Mythbusters and see which rumors were true and which ones were total bull.

Let's take a look at a few rumors:

Rumor: Direct sequel to FFIV coming as Final Fantasy IV: The After Years? Confirmed! The once Japan-only mobile phone game is indeed coming to Western shores. On which platform? On to the next rumor.

Rumor: Final Fantasy IV sequel, The After Years is a Wii exclusive? Confirmed! Square Enix announced that The After Years is gonna be released as an exclusive downloadable WiiWare title, along with other titles from the publisher.

Rumor: Final Fantasy IV sequel The After coming to XBLA? Busted! Despite Square Enix's confirmations that they're planning to release titles for XBLA, the announcement confirms that this batch is heading for the Wii and not the 360.

So yes, to cut it all short, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is gonna be released as a downloadable WiiWare title. Accompanying the direct sequel's WiiWare entrance will be Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord, which is a sequel to My Life as a King.

In addition, the old Final Fantasy titles will also be available for download via Virtual Console. Now you can brush up on your Final Fantasy history and rediscover what saved Squaresoft and made it into one of the biggest publishers in the industry. Release is currently set at May 2009 for Japan.

No word on US releases yet, but you know we'll keep you posted right?
