Rumor: U2 to be featured in possible Guitar Hero III sequel? |
Ó
If you're ready for another round of grinding through the rumor mill, then an article in this month's Electronics Gaming Monthly magazine may spark your interest. Today's topic focuses on Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PC, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii) and its possible sequels starring some of our favorite rock gods. Here's the snippet as posted on EGM's Rumor Mill article:
We already know Guitar Hero IV is on its way, but I'm hearing two more Guitar Hero titles are also in the works, bringing Guitar Hero III's sequel count to four. And one may star a group that rocks in mysterious ways.
Throwing in a little speculation on the side, the last line may actually be a reference to the song "Mysterious Ways" from the 1991 album Achtung Baby by U2. Considering, there's already been supposed word of Aerosmith signing up to do one of the Guitar Hero III sequels, so this idea may not be totally off.
Whether this rumor is true or not, drawing in such big names from the music industry is a sure sign of how the gaming industry is slowly spreading its boundaries and changing into a genre everyone outside it can eventually relate to.

Comments [refresh]
I hope they include The Fly... WHAT A SONG!
Nooooooo!!
I F#*king hate bono and U2 with a passion. Guitar Hero 3 was wrought with terrible bands like the kaiser chiefs and the gallows (ugh)... U2 is just taking it too far.
screw guitar hero, Im sticking with rock-band
Then there's no need to leave a comment!
bzzt, wrong. if noone voiced their opinions of the "progress" of these franchises, then nothing is ever going to change.
I was an avid fan of Guitar hero 1 and 2, and to be fair, Guitar Hero 3 does have some good stuff (sonic youth an smashing pumpkins were particularly great moments for me), but to see a marked increase in the dodgier bands in the future titles really bugs me.
More to the point, U2 are not renowned for their amazing guitars. 'The edge' (stupid name...) is overly reliant on effects pedals... take away all the delays and flange caravans and whatnot and you're left with very basic very dull riffs.
What I'd like to see in the Guitar hero franchise is more of a musician oriented selection of songs (like in the first 2 games), not what bands get shown loads on MTV.
I would cream my pants to see a setlist comprised of bands like Fugazi, Led Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Devildriver, Steve Malkmus and the Jicks (or pavement), Jefferson Airplane, manic street preachers and so forth without the mainstream junk that make certain sections of the game such a chore to play...
perhaps the game should go the way of singstar and have a massive song store online... upon buying the game you could get like 40 free downloads to build up your initial song library.... whatever.
LOL bzzt wrong: Commenting and running, does not result in "progress", but as you're back, it's not a problem, is it?
I'm not getting into a U2 debate, but they are one of the most successful bands on the planet. Surely this means they sell music... a lot of music, which means they must have a fan base... a huge fan base. Maybe, just maybe, the developers are thinking of them instead of you, to help shift some copies of the game!
You do have a point with The Edge (Slash is a much better name of course... ... ... yeah), but he's not a lead guitarist; has never claimed to be, but he is a 5h!t-hot rhythm player - some of his chords are painful to finger - and fans will be over the moon that they're making an appearance and can strum along to them!
I also hope you get some of the bands you want.
Bit of a strange conversation to be having with someone who doesn't want any of that 'mainstream junk', yet wants the Manic Street Preacher's 'renowned' guitaring to make an appearance L-O-L!
Dude, I used to be in a U2 Tribute band (because I apparently have a striking resemblance to a young bono), which is where much of my resentment comes from, but I assure you... there's nothing complicated or overwhelming about the instrumentals of the band... it's just another example of over-produced sound... But your right, this isnt the place to have an argument over U2.
Guitar Hero is a massively successful franchise, they don't need commercially huge bands like U2 to sell their game... I guess I just prefer the musical direction Harmonix take over that of Neversoft.... GH1+2 took risks with their bands... they promoted lesser known musicians in their bonus tracks and on the whole the majority of the songs in the game were an absolute pleasure to play... in GH3 there's entire sections which are a chore to play and more of a grope at the big names... Yeah, Guns N Roses are fun to play, but the way they hype up their appearance is more off putting than anything...
Don't get me wrong... theres still brilliant songs in there, as I said, I was especially pleased to see sonic youth in there, but meh.... I give up.
Ideally what there should be is a rating system for each song so that you can see which of the songs are popular with the userbase, and the company can release more or less of something to meet the demand...
oh, and when I mention the Manic Street Preachers, I of course refer to their older material, not their sellout crappy post Richey Edwards stuff... Back in the day they had some pretty meaty riffs (the Holy Bible and Gold Against The Soul are filled with great guitar moments)...
