Revolution Tech Specs Revealed

Posted Mar 29, 2006 at 2:08PM EST by QJ Staff

Matt Casamassina of IGN managed to get his hands on the most recent specs on the Revolution from unnamed, reliable sources. Although we can't say for sure if these are 100% correct, these numbers are probably very close to what Revolution developers will be working with.

IBM's "Broadway" CPU is clocked at 729MHz, which is a significant improvement from the Gamecube's 485 MHz. The ATI powered "Hollywood" GPU clocks in at 243MHz, which is faster than both Gamecube's 162MHz and Xbox's 233MHz. Lastly, the Revolution will have 88MBs of total system RAM, not including the GPU's on-board 3MBs. For a more in-depth look at some of the Revolution's hardware components, be sure to check out the full article.

This is sad compared to XBOX 360 and PS3.

Sorry but you really shouldn't compare it to the 360 or PS3.

If you want a boring console with WORLD WAR 2: YET ANOTHER CLONE or SUPER FLASHY RACER 12, possibly GENERIC SUPER FIGHTERS 3 then buy those consoles.

I thought it would be alot better than the old Gamecube atleast. That spacy controller wont help much now...

Sad, I really liked nintendo...

The Revolution is more powerful than the XBOX, and look at the size of it? Plus will any of those consoles have a Zelda title or Animal Crossing? No, and you probably don't care about them either because your first console was a PS2.

Also those aren't finalized specifications, and it's all down to the actual processor, just looking at raw figures doesn't show ***** about the console. The Intel Pentium-M processor, at only 1.5 Ghz can outperform a 3Ghz Celeron in games, but oh the Celeron is double the Ghz! Sadly it isn't that simple and if you don't understand how it works, google it and find out.

Both the XBOX360 and Revolution processors were made by the same company also, don't forget.

if these are true this is quite saddening, i can see why they would have trouble putting ue3 on it. but, not all is lost, there's signifigantly more ram than there were in last gen consoles, that will help to make nice texture resolutions and allow a more rich environment than the last gen, so the games should look like beefed up xbox games, especially the first party games(which on the gamecube looked better than most xbox games)

if its so sad, why are you even on the rev site? besides tech specs mean nothing, you want us to start comparing the ds to the psp and see which one is sold out in japan?

tech specs do mean nothing, i don't see why we can't keep making kick ass games on the NES, that thing rocked, and it's really cheap to buy too! Since tech specs don't matter i'm sure developers will churn out some sick next gen titles for it!

the tech specs are important. i know nintendo are known for innovation but if this just looks like it's running xbox games no one will buy it in the face of ps3 and xbox350.

i also feel like it would be nice if rev. was more powerful as then they could implement more intereseting fun things... it may have the odd special game but they won't be the awesome next gen things we might be hoping for.

i think they have to consider that either a lot of people will buy it purely on what the games look like, or on how it's perceived as the 'poor man' of the 3. lets face it, they say it's not in direct competition cos it's different, but who's going to get 2 consoles for christmas?

# Spec mistake I hope.Guest 2006-03-30 01:13
This rumor or fact couldn't have come at a worst time. Nintendo up to this point had the momentum going into E3. I personally hope that the specs post by IGN isn't for the final system.

I for one is fine with the fact that it will not support HD but I will be damned if I am going to invest in a system that graphically does differentiate itself from the previous gen. All that I have seen from Nintendo plans for REvo I am happy with. But a great improvement in graphics is a must.

NEED MORE MEMORY THAN 88MB…I EXPECT THE MINIMUM OF 128MB

if it wasn't for the whole twist with the controller I could honestly say.... phuc|< it.

to the guy on the mario subject..... I agree, the original mario kicked ass but anything after that was a 5h177y knock off.

well they just screwed themselves... who wants to buy a next gen system thats not gonna be much better than the current xbox.. nintendo brought this on themselves.. they have been asking for this since the n64 release and its finally caught up wih them... im sure it will have great games but only 1st party ones just like the gamecube.. i love my gamecube but i spend more time with the xbox just for my emulators.

why would I buy a system for $150 only for the controller, and no differents fron the old system graphics. I can see at first people playing the system for the controller, but after 2 or 5 month later alot of gamer are going to start feel bore with the controller and the old graphics. is like at first with gamecube hype alot of gamers buy the system, then 5 month later the sales fall to the floor. and part can be blame on the games no games no sales of systems.

# O Ye of little faith..Guest 2006-03-30 06:12
Can you name me 3 games on the xbox that looked better graphically than Resident Evil 4 for the gamecube? Nope. Didn't think so. The Rev will be about twice as powerful as the gamecube so don't tell me that there won't be a great improvment in graphics from the previous generation for Nintendo.

Also the big N hasn't been in this buisness for over twenty years by not knowing what they are doing. Yeah we have made a few mistakes, but thats bloody buisness. This console is about ease of use, new and innovative games, and having fun. It's not about who's got the fastest machine.

I promise you there are going to be things about the Rev that have not been shown to the public yet that will validate and have you blow a wad in your shorts. Till then have fun hating.

To the above poster....yea thats true. If you play some games like Metriod Prime 1/2, Resident Evil 4, and Zelda: Twilight Princess on a HD tv them graphics look pretty much next gen anyway. So yea some of the cubes games look next gen and better than Xbox..

The Revolution is going to be one of the best selling consoles because of it's price and functionality. It'll have a huge back catalogue of games with support for third party harddrives to store even more games on. Plus with the spec that's shown it's going to cost a damn lot less than the current consoles, $200 or less, possibly $150. They're going to reach a pretty untouched market. The parents and gamers who aren't willing to spent $500+ for an XBOX360 for only 2 'good' games.

# still a bit dodgycomedy 2006-03-30 11:26
yes, there are some games on gamecube which look better than xbox, but that's cos xbox was a load of rubbish.

for rev. :

ps2 wasn't the best looking system and it sold loads so there is a case for the system which doesn't look best doing good business.

if you were to visit someone's house and then find they had this cool little box where you could play all the games of your childhood or others with that weird magic wand controller and then find it only costs $150 you might go out and get one... unlike the ps3 or xbox254

mario and metroid etc should sell rev quite well, also who's going to rule out a nintendogs on the rev?

against rev:

people who know just a little about videogames, or those who know nothing - as in parents of small kids or small kids themselves - will go with the system which is shiniest and 'best' and according to the kids on the playground the system with the shiniest graphics and most gory games will be that system.

there are some must have games already pencilled in for ps3, and unless we see some good nintendo ip and can get excited then we'll not join in the rev hype.

i don't like the idea of using sd cards on rev, it sounds like a real slap dash, slip shod way of doing it. although sd cards are dirt cheap.

Oh dear, the revolution has inferior graphics compared to the 360 and the PS3. How ever will I impress my friends now, the Nintendo zealot I am? All my friends are shallow and are interested only in how a game looks. I know, screw Nintendo, I'll spend $500 on a PS3 and pay $70 per game and jump with glee. (or I could just buy myself a frickin' DVD player and stfu...)

It really does show you, when people like Iwata release important information like this, who the real gamers are and who the clueless ones are.

people the only winner of this war of system, is going to be chose by the numbers of games they put in their system. and 90% of the games can be crap, but people still going to buy it and buy that system with more games. good example when I go to ebgames or gamestop they have 38-62 games for gamecube and xbox 74-109 games and for ps2 108-162 games. and normal people are going to chose the system with a big numbers of games.

First off the author of rev should never again post and stick his head in the nearest urine filled toilet and inhale. Your comment is completly unfounded and unintelligent.

Secondly to Diego, if you look at the revolution strickly from your standpoint Nintendo has already won. There will be a library of THOUSANDS of games available for it at launch, and consequently I would buy a revolution if that were the only fascet of gaming it offered. I would most certainly pay 150-200 dollars to play any game from Nin, Sega, or from the Turbo Graphix 16 that came out in the last 20 years alone. So check your facts and try thinking before you open youe mouth again.

# RAM is not a big deal for the Revsmokeelaa 2006-03-31 08:13
The Rev is only going to output up to 480p. It doesn't need the amount of RAM a 360 or Ps3 needs to push the HD res their games are built around.

I want to see this list of thousands of game for revolution. and if you are counting the old nes, sega and tubo graphix games you are crazy. first you have to pay for them to be play on the system, like $1 doller for each. second PC, xbox, xbox360, psp and ps2 can play them for free with homebrew. and last I think the ps3 will be more then capable to play homebrew for nes and much more. and please do not cound old games like new games, not thousand but 5 or 10 games for revolution. and I will not or never pay 1 penny for a 21 year old game, only a loser will do that.

It will be a Revolutionary Paperweight... Nintendo will fail due to it heavily relying on several old franchises. Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, etc... will all eventually fade away into history. Unless they make new games with new characters, this old rehashed system will fail.

# Sony downfallGuest 2006-04-02 07:00
If any company "fades away into history" this gen, it will be Sony.... They simply don't have the money to even attempt a gamble like the Revolution. Microsoft obviously do.

Sony cannot stay "the most popular", and the things they're doing with the Playstation brand don't help.

Getting sued by the company that made their Dual Shock technology didn't help.

Their other technology (TV's etc) not doing well.....

Some companies pulling out of UMD production all together.....

PSP game sales not exactly through the roof.....

PS3 costing an arm and a Leg to manufacture, let alone sell....

I could go on. Sony's console years are Numbered.

Apparently you haven't been playing games to long. Your not nor will you ever pay a penny for a 21 year old game? Thats fine because your obviously not Nintendo's target audience. There are a lot more of us who are willing and WAITING to do so. Also Nintendo is not going to fade away anytime soon, but the last poster is right, Sony is in some deep finacial trouble. They are losing so much money it's not funny.
