Report: Wii successor will be Wii HD, true "next-gen" console |

The Wii's always been getting a lot of flak from its critics who say that it's not really "next-gen." Well maybe this piece of news will keep them quiet. According to a report from What They Play, the second generation Wii will be closer to "next-gen," and "far more than a simple refresh of current hardware." For now, it's given the nickname "Wii HD."
According to their sources, it seems that Wii HD will have HD visuals, and a "greater emphasis on digitally distributed and backwardly compatible content." That last one suggests that Wii HD might actually have a hard drive or a large flash memory solution.
The report hails the transition to the second generation as similar to how the original Game Boy jumped to the Game Boy Advance.
Previous reports from other sources suggested that Nintendo is also looking to holographic data storage for its next console. This kind of tech can hold anywhere from 300 GB to 1.6 TB. Nintendo also revealed before that they are working on a Wii storage solution, although they didn't say if it was for this generation or the second generation. If they're working on it now though, chances are we'll see it on Wii HD.
The report from What They Play says that Wii HD is coming in 2011. Any reaction, critics?

first it needs to be able to handle large polygon counts, otherwise its useless
also the menu needs sorted, more like the ps3/360, needs more advance features
anyway mmm, i think theyve made a mistake, the wii was the wii, wii HD needs something like the wiimote aswell, something to stand out, and new looks, otherwise people wont buy it

best statement ever.
HD just means a specific resolution.
normal HD is 720p, which is 1080 x 720 pixels.
Full HD is 1080p, which is 1920 x x 1080 pixels.
You could even play SNES games in HD, if you stretch the game to a HD resolution.
And what has the menu layout to do with HD??

The fact that people are always comparing the Wii to xbox & ps3 and complaining about it, is pretty pointless. If the Wii is soo not "next-gen", then why is it still on the top and outselling the others who are fighting to hold 2nd place. Critics is just a fancy name for xbox and ps3 owners who can't imagine that they don't own the most sought after device. And their petty pride won't allow them to enjoy it for what it is.

Wii - Haven't touched the wii since April.
PS3 - Looking foward to resistnce 2, LBP, Bioshock, Fallout3 and HOME. The wii is for anyone, but the PS3 is for those who like to
PLAY B3YOND the gimmick that is called the Wii.

Doesnt that mean both systems are sitting!?
I am still waiting for a GOOD reason to buy a PS3 OR a 360. Every time I almost go buy one I start looking at the games that are out, and I dont see any worth spending $500+ for the system and still have to buy the game.
My wii works well. It provides HOURS of actual FUN and not competitive gameplay. I dont need to invite people over to play PS3 so I can smash them at a game they have never played. If they come and play Wii it takes 2 minuts for them to figure it out, and then I dont have to hold back. I recently lost at mario party to a group of people who have never even played a wii before. That was its intended purpose, and it fills it nicely.
The PS3 was supposed to be the system that changed the world, created world peace, solved starvation problems, and ended wars.
So far all its done is PROMISED great things. I have yet to see them.

Upconverting does count. Which is MOSTLY what the 360 does. So by that logic alone, the 360 is NOT REAL HD.
Anyway, it takes power to handle source at that size so of course an HD Wii would require more power. I believe they covered that with:
"and far more than a simple refresh of current hardware."

Hum...seems like a waste to me!

The Wii had it's moment... then they realized that they didn't have to make good games for people to buy the thing.
The only thing the Wii is useful for now is emulation. And I'm not talking about BUYING the old games on the Virtual Shop channel.
I use my PS3 every day. I use my Wii when I want to feel nostalgic and play some SNES games because that's all it's good for.
The last extremely good game realeased for the Wii was Metroid... and that was a year ago.

Learn to read douche bag. I did NOT say HD would be too expensive. Get your head out of your ass!
"Who are you to say holographic data storage will be too expensive in 2011? Too expensive for Nintendo perhaps. The real next gen consoles will probably begin using it by then, since Sony and Microsoft don't insist on making $150 on each console sold."
I'm someone who lives in the real world and knows about technology, retail, distribution...... Unlike yourself. Yes, on all accounts!
"Funny how rumors of a HD Wii surface right when demand is down and Wii's are getting easier to find."
That's because production is up you moron. If you knew ANYTHING about this industry you would have known that. Remember that PRODUCTION increase we read a few months back? That THING that everyone thought they would see RIGHT AWAY? Well, the reality is, it takes MONTHS to see that product and now we are.
"Now that so many people have Wiis, Nintendo has a new console they want you to buy next! "
Well, the RUMOR is 2011. So yeah, you're an idiot.

"If upconverting does count, why is the 360 not HD?"
Upconverting does NOT count. Gee I forgot the "n't". Wow, you caught a grammar error. Good for you dip*****.
"which is ONE game."
WRONG again. Many games are less the 720. Just like the PS3.
"This was to make the lighting effects better, which they are great."
No, they are not. That game looks like CRAP on large screens.
"Acording to this Wii-tard, if the Wii could upscale its jagged 480p graphics to 720p or higher, it would officially be HD"
I said no such thing. Learn to read douche bag.
"while the native resolution of 720p in the 360 (and PS3) is not HD?"
Read above.
@ShinseiTom - Exactly, thank you!
@Douche Bag again - See, why can't you act like a normal person? Plenty of other people seem to have no problem.
