Reggie Fils-Aime: Wii's limited storage now a "mainstream problem" |

It looks like the Wii's rather limited storage capacity isn't just a problem for "geeks and otaku" anymore. Talking to MTV multiplayer, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the company is now seeing it as a more mainstream problem:
From an Americas-centric perspective, here is the reality we see. We have a consumer base who loves virtual console. We have a userbase who really is enjoying WiiWare content. So for us really our challenge really is how do we satisfy all these consumers who are loving all of the product we make available on a download basis?
As we continue to have things, as you point out, like Mario Kart that has its own channel when youÂ’re playing from an Internet perspective, weÂ’re just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it.
Apart from assuring Wii owners that Nintendo is "looking hard at the storage situation", Fils-Aime didn't give any specific ideas on how they'll tackle the Wii's storage problems. Of course, it would probably be easy enough to roll out a firmware update that allows the Wii to access files on a USB storage device, but taking Nintendo's views on piracy into account along with the current surge of Wii homebrew, it may take a while until we see anything concrete.

If the wii was NOT unlocked already I bet they would not even think twice about using the USB. the problem is, if they make an update that allows access to USB storage we can piggy back on that and use it for our purposes. Supposedly we only have access to USB 1.1 on there now, and I beleive it. If you have tried using loaders that run off a USB stick you will see how much slower it is than the front SD slot.
The home brew scene has much LESS to worry about when it comes to making sure "our" usb solution is rock solid, and secure. We dont care how secure it is, in fact we need it unsecure. Where as ninty needs to try to lock it up as tight as they can.
I am sure ninty is not dumb, so they know eventually SOMEONE will unlock whatever they do to add more storage, so they are probably considering that risk the MOST as they search for a solution.
I bet one major solution will be a new wii design with more internal flash. Possibly a few gb?? But for the existing wii users we need an add on of some sort. And what can they do?
1) Make it so that the front slot supports up to 8 gb SD cards, and allow wiiware AND VC to run off wads INSTALLED to there.
or
2) Unlock the USB port and make a wii HDD addition.
Both solutions would be nice. Other than that, I dont see an easy add on without opening them all up.
Will be interesting to see what they come up with.

They might open up the SD port like you suggest, but that could open security holes.
As much as I hate to say this, my bet is on a console redesign that incorporates a larger internal hard drive. Given that it is not possible to transfer your shopping license from one Wii to another, I see this possible decision as angering and alienating an existing fan base.
As much as I may like Nintendo's past products, they've made some really bad decisions lately and I don't see an easy way out for them on this one.
