Red SteelRed Steel is one of the highly anticipated games for Wii. With previous reports that Wii launch titles will lack online functionality, Ubisoft Senior Project Coordinator Stephanie Langlois discussed in an interview, the multiplayer mode of Red Steel.

Asked if it would feature an online mode, Langlois answered briefly, "It's tough to discuss multiplayer in detail as it's still a secret, but there will be four-player split screen, but no LAN. Online will maybe one day be announced by Nintendo but it won't be for the launch [of Red Steel]. In terms of gameplay I can't reveal anything really but what I can say is that internally we are making tons of tests."

Other developers like Activision, THQ and Midway have indicated that their launch titles will lack an online component. Some reports from multiple sources claim that the Wii Wi-Fi Connection libraries won't be available to third party developers until early 2007.

Although the online capability wouldn't be available upon release, Nintendo has big plans for its online venture for Wii. It will have built in Wi-Fi capabilities and a WiiConnect24 feature that places the system in sleep mode enabling it to stay permanently connected to the Internet. This will assure that content is downloaded and shared even when the player is away.

It might take a while for Red Steel to get full online capability, but the game's other features will more than make up for the lack of online feature come launch time.
