Ray Maguire: PS3's competition "past its peak" |
Ó
Games Industry got in touch with Sony UK's managing director Ray
Maguire, who notes that the PS3 is now hitting its stride, and
competing formats are already past their peak.Maguire admits that the company takes its time in bringing products to the market, but adds that, "When we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit - and it will be something that will be around for a very long time," he said. "It's nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now."
Maguire also says that it's difficult to meet the expectations of consumers who want immediate results, but Sony has always risen to that challenge. "What we haven't worked out how to do yet is have a child in less than nine months," he jests.
With the upcoming release of Home, an online social networking service, Maguire stresses that it's crucial that it's release on time, rather than an earlier but premature release then patched at a later date. "We have to make sure that things are born at the right time, that the infrastructures are right and are tested, and that they actually work," he said. "It's one of the things that PlayStation has been known for - a plug-and-play mentality, rather than a patch-patch mentality."
While gamers would prefer to get their hands on the latest software ASAP, Maguire makes a simple, yet strong point: "Getting it right is more important than getting it out quick," he said.

Well I got my 360 in 2005. I've had 3 great years of gaming. And I'll be ready to get the next system as well. Come 2009 or 10 I don't care. I can't wait to jump into the new thing. 5 years for a console is fine for me.
With all the games that the 360 has put out, if they put out a new system now, the 360 still had a good amount of content. If Microsoft wanted to, they could have a killer new system ready within a year that would thrash the PS3's performance. I just wonder what the next system generation will bring.
if MS didn't cut corner and rush it and caused so much hardware failure who knows what would be different. Everyone I bump into that got turned off by 360 is due to the fact that RROD still happens (although less with newer release). Some early supporters I know actually got fed up with the RROD problem and just settle for PS3 and never look back. I had a conversation with one of them recently but they are not interested in looking into a next generation of 360 just. As the guy put it.. he will have to wait and see if there is anymore hardware issue.
The "huge" sucess the 360 had is only because it was the rist next generation system. If they launched both at the same time, their wouldn be sucha big gap between the two systems. Now that Sony managed the production of Blu-Ray the PS4 won't get delayed in that kind the ps3 was. PlayStation still is a big Brand, especially outside the US.
Playstation 2 was released in 2000 and it's still selling and getting some great games 3 years after the 360's release. Even the PSX was around for awhile after the first Xbox was released. It's not like the PS3 is going to cease to exist once the new MS platform is released. PS3 will still be around a few years after that.
