Rare says Goldeneye "possible" on VC (and XBLA?!)

Goldeneye 007 on N64: A Goldeneye-less Virtual Console isn't looking good for dreamers out there. Among the best of the N64 games, Ocarina, Mario Kart, and Mario 64 have already been released, so why can't they take Goldeneye 007 over to the VC as well? Or if it's not on the VC... maybe somewhere else? Some have been constantly hoping, and the way it seems, seeing Bond and his spy-buddies online would be quite a "rare" sight.

As CVG reports, someone on the Q&A threads at Rare was able to squeeze out some info on bringing more of their titles online. What surprised us was a well-placed hint of something that could also come out on Xbox Live:

The only Rare-developed title on Virtual Console right now is the original Donkey Kong Country, and unofficially there's a strong likelihood that its sequels will follow... But the Donkey Kong series of games is a Nintendo-owned franchise... whereas something like Banjo isn't... so it's nowhere near as easy to call... Especially when you also consider the existence of Xbox Live Arcade. So right now, the best answer we can offer (for either download service) is 'it's possible'.

Speaking more specifically about Goldeneye 007 though, a representative of Rare did indicated that the game is "caught up in a convoluted web of rights" and that this "doesn't mean it won't happen, just that a lot of people with a lot of different perspectives are involved."

Looks like someone stamped a big, red CONFIDENTIAL mark on this whole issue and doesn't want to reveal the rest of the document. Just what is cooking in the Rare labs? The whole VC thing was a long-running rumor, but now an XBLA title?

Is no doubt held by some movie studio or some such, so it's not much different then DK.

Rare could have said go ahead and take the donkey kong info, but sorry we are taking all the level design and game code....have fun.

So obviously there is some sort of realationship already with MS....i'd rather see it on VC then on XBLA, and it's most likely only going to go on VC as it would have to be "ported" to XBLA as there is no N64 emu for XBLA....

# A Simple Solution...Guest 2007-03-05 15:06
I have a very simple solution -

Allow nintnedo to have Golden Eye, Banjo, Diddykong Racing, Perfect dark on its virtual console - and any profits from those games goes directly to nintendo.

AND, allow these games to be released for XBLA, where all the profits recieved on the xbox selling of these titles, goes directly to microsoft or rare - A win - win solution.

Or they can just do royalties, and just release it on VC

there's more to this as it seems, they'd have to go through Neversoft or Activision or whoever owns the rights to the 007 license now... it has nothing to do with it being a n64 game

looks like the 007 license is the town-whore everyone had a taste

would be pretty funny if they settled everything and priced the game at 20 bucks just to cover the royalties resulting in nobody downloading the game

wheres my mario party damnit

I don't care about golden eye cuz i got it for Nintendo sixty foooooooouuuuuu uuurrrrrr.

but seriously, come on if it was released on a nintendo system it should be able to be released on VC. Vc should be able to have every Rare game that came out on nintendo.( CONKERS BAD FUR DAY!) M$ better let nintendo have it.

Unless you can use the Wii remote to play it, I'd prefer it come out on XBLA (or both, that way everybody wins). The 360 controller even beats the Wavebird. The only reason I can't stand playing this on the N64 anymore is because of the completely unwieldy controls and the N64 controller, if they redid it for the Xbox's more standard controllers it would have standard controls and I'd definitely play it again.

Put it out on both. IMO I don't think MS cares about arcade, I mean look at the crap they put out on it with an occasional good one every other month. It'll do go for all copanies if it comes out on both more people with the ability to get = more revenues from more people buying. Problem solved

Microsoft owns Rare but doesnt own the rights to N64 exclusives. Why do you think Donkey Kong Country is a VC game? Nintendo paid for these exclusives and can still use these. Now the problem is charging money again. Thats where all the problems come in. They will have to pay Microsoft royalties for every purchase.

so then how does your view change about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, obviously a PlayStation title, coming to XBLA?

Virtual console and Xbox Live Arcade? I find that a pretty fair argument. I mean, Rare IS owned by Microsoft, but Goldeneye was released on the Nintendo 64. If it's released on one or the other, I could care less. I have both anyways.

hey if they can give us the old TMNT arcade game on XBLA arcade then goldeneye wouldn't be to far behind.

there's so many FPS games out in today's market, i don't see the lure of this ancient game anymore.

the 3d gamesa from the 32/64bit era look horrible and make you feel like your running around in boxed rooms.

they could have changed the graphics to that of perfect dark but the whol game is based off the movie from levels to level design.

# wavebird rocksGuest 2007-03-06 22:12
I'd have to disagree with you. I love the gamecube and wavebird controllers. IMo, even the ps2's and 64 controllers were better than the xboxs. They are just too bulky for me.

Okay, are you on crack? You can't even type a sentence properly.

First off, the 64 was awesome. Sure it may not have had as many games as ps1 but it had a lot of great games. How can you say the wii has no games? The ps3 doesn't even come close to having good games as the wii. On a TV show I saw, awhile ago, the ps3 had one 5 star game, and the rest were 3 or lower, mostly 2s. Wii had a score of 3 and higher, mostly 4s and one 5.

The ps3 won't win becase they have focused so much on advanced technology that is too expensive that the majority of people in the market are not willing to buy yet. They are I'd say around 3 years ahead of their time.

# sounds funGuest 2007-03-07 07:33
Yeah but see I'm talking about the greater download service of the VC. Nintendo by far surpasses anything Sony and MS put out on there downloading service. Accually they put them to shame. Have fun with Worms HD becuase that'll be the big on for about 2 months.

why is nobody bringin up activision who owns the rights to the bond license currently. They would get a decent chunk of the money. but seriously, how can people honestly believe VC emulation would be better than an xbox port? First off online multiplayer, that alone makes it, they could get rid of the single player for all i care if it was online. and if they bumped it up to even more than 4 players all the better. second the one thing that really has not aged well are the controls (the graphics and framerate were never good to begin with). with emulation you wouldn't be able to fix those problems.
