Psych study suggests players happier to die in-game than shooting others |

In a collaborative effort among IT, research, and psychological departments, researchers from the University of Helsinki, Finland selected, classified, and observed three dozen (36) young adults who played James Bond 007: NightFire. They did this to investigate the player's emotional reactions to violent video games.
And results have showed that players were more stressed by killing other players than enjoying it. In fact, researchers believe the opposite can happen when receiving damage from other players.
The psycho-related gaming test was used by placing all subjects under data gathering while playing the console game. Players were monitored for changes in the zygomaticus major (a facial muscle connecting cheek to a corner of your mouth) and corrugator supercilii (a muscle under your eyebrow).
Orbicularis oculi electromyographic (EMG) activity and skin conductance level (SCL) data were also recorded. Each player was also subjected to rate his emotions via a survey designed with the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, though the survey was only to investigate the psychoticism trait.
Surprisingly, it was found that when players were killed or received damage in-game, their level of skin conductance level increased. The zygomatic major and orbicularis oculi also had increased levels of activity. And researchers have concluded that because the highest Psychoticism scorers experienced the least anxiety, it's likely that players do not feel bad when dying.
We guess it's really the part about successfully fragging other players that has us confused. Obviously due to the results, the study indicates that it's possible the players weren't happy after downing an opponent.

Apparently they didn't study Canadians. I take great pleasure in watching an opponent step into one of my Claymores in COD4... but I HATE being killed. (Especially if I have 6 kills in a row)
That explains it. I'd be happy if I got a break from playing that game too.
when I play tekken dr or vf5, and I'm about to be ko'ed by my apponent. I feel like I get stressed out very quickly. But when I loose, that stress disapears and I feel okay. But when win, when j was about to loose. I feel great over enjoying emotion, happy that I just kicked that person's ass into a pulp.
it so happens that i was playing this game at my friends house on his original xbox and was so annoyed when i died on a crappy FPS. I couldn't believe we used to play games like that when i play COD4 now lol...
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read! Simply a bunch of 'revolutionary' d1ckhead scientists trying to get a name for themselves... that or their machinery is faulty (and being scientists, should've realized that). I wonder how many people have thrown a joypad in temper when they've won!? Idiots!

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who gets pumped when I get kills and pissed when I die. I swear like a sailor when I die, in any game. Or even just losing. I punched a dent into my wall after the 19th attempt to beat Raining Blood on Expert on Guitar Hero III.
I am not some psycho guy can't tell game from reality or some whinny little kid who takes winning too seriously or some self-proclaimed l33t g4m4r who pwnz the entire gaming world. I die ALOT in games like Orange box and loving it (the more odd death I got, like rocketed in midair the better). Take a deep breath, let's face it, it is just a freaking game. I drive a psycho in game but my 16 years of driving record is totally clean in real life. If you can't tolerate dying in games may be you shouldn't be playing it. At least in real life you'll die once for sure, so not to mention how many more times in a simulation ;) Keep in mind, in order for someone to rise to the top with the 15-0 streak.. there are those who stack at the bottom. We're all doing our jobs.
in games anyway. Like in Halo 3 when 2 guys come at you in a Warthog trying to gun you down and run you over and you jump out of the way and hit them with 2 grenades before they can even get out. Oh yeah, fun times.
I call bullsh*t. The only way I could see this as being true is if it was single player only. But they refer to 'killing other players' - clearly it's multiplayer, and I don't know a single person who plays multiplayer games and enjoys dying, or hates to win.
Not to sound psychotic or anything, but i love the thrill of stalking someone through your sniper scope in COD4. Watching them head towards your cleverly placed claymore, to then survive the blast upon triggering it. But It doesn't worry me, i only continue stalking watching them looking around in backlot. Being able to decide when and how to take your frag. You wait for that perfect time to humiliate lovabBoy991. You spot the perfect shot, you hold your breath to take it..............then some idiot shanks you from behind and you curse and scream and throw the controller at the 46 inch lcd screen......i really don't know what this article is talking about

.... when you're in the heat of battle, you're very focused on the task at hand: killing. Even when you make a kill, you're still focused on the other immediate dangers (ie: other players). This is stressful (if you stop to throw your hands up in the air with glee, you know you'll be fragged). When you die, you can finally take a breather for a moment and the stress evaporates. That doesn't mean you enjoy DYING, however. It just means you can relax for a second. What they SHOULD be testing is stress levels as soon as a match ends, and everyone stops playing. I'm sure they'll find that in general, the person with the most kills and least deaths is the happiest.
