PS3 shortage and Wii's opportunity |
Ó
Is the PS3 shortage an opportunity for the Nintendo Wii? Well, John Pospisil of Tech.Blorge seem to think that might just be the case in this junction. He started by saying that getting a PS3 in North America has been quite difficult and basing from our reports, he does have a point there. (Remember that nasty musical chairs incident at the West Bend Walmart?)He mentioned that according to statements by the American Technology Research, Sony was only able to ship between 125,000 to 175,000 PS3s while Nintendo shipped 425,000 to 475,000 for their North American launch. So basically, his argument is if you wanna buy a game console for the holidays, you've got a better chance of picking a Wii than getting a PS3 because there are more Wiis than PS3s.
It's a case of buying the one that's there in the store shelf, but then again, absence does make the heart grow fonder. What do you think about this? Would you buy a Wii if you can't get your hands on a PS3? Or do you think there would also be a shortage in Wii units? Comments section's down there, you know what to do.

The console buyers can be an extremely polar bunch. I live in scotland and have had the money for a ps3 since march. I have not gone out to buy a 360 bundle and i wont be buying a Wii at launch. Brand awareness is a wonderful thing. The coverage of the PS3 launch on news channel far outwieghed that of the 360. Ok it wasnt all good news, muggings etc but it all has the same thing running through it. And that is that Ps3 is highly desirable and is a machine that the mainstream wants.
No Ps3 in Europe?
Sorry sony but I'm buying a Wii, and you will lose a lot of market share in Europe since Xbox360 and Wii will be well installed
Nintendo did a good job launching its console 2 days after Sony in North America
and there is a major shortage of both here. They are almost wiped out before they get on shelves, unless I want to spend $1200 on EBay, no thank you.
I can't find either...they both seem to be in shortage. I know someone here is going to kill me but...I was in target last week looking for a gift for my father and they announced over the intercom that they had just recieved 3 60 Gb ps3s. I just kind of froze, like, 'Wow', and walked to electronics. They had unloaded them in the open and had a policeman guarding them. I just kind of stared at them for a while... Then walked away, because I really don't want one. The next night I waited 11 hours in line for a Wii outside EB Games. Zelda has been worth it. Too bad Red Steel is the worst game EVER made... And call of duty 3 for Wii is amazingly good...ok i'm done.
If it ever came to the point that I simply can't wait for the PS3 anymore (which won't happen any time soon), I'd rather buy an X-box 360 than a Wii. With all fanboyism aside, I look at the Wii's lineup and all I see is kid's games with a few exceptions. I already got burned rooting for the underdog with the Gamecube and I,m done with that.
considering the PS3 shortage turned out to be intentional.
(my did works for a Company that writes the software for Sony's factories)
He said they had limited the factories to about 1/3 of what they could easily be producing.

At the gamestop I work at we have no Wiis or PS3s and they both get bought right up the morning we get them (which is usually in a shipment of 2-4). Since I think this trend won't end anytime soon it's just a matter of whos the most diligent in finding the console they want.
Also haven't had anyone ask if we have PS3s then Wiis or the other way around so I don't know how many people are convertting out there.
