PS3 Japan sales outsold Wii for the month of March

Hooray! - Image 1And the PS3 finally did it! Not only did it sell more PS3 units this past month of March, it also outsold the perpetual winner of hardware sales, Nintendo's Wii! This is no joke, people. The great, white Wii has been defeated!

After 16 long months of Wii domination in Japan, the PS3 finally overtook the numbers, taking away a sweet 146,948 units throughout March, compared to the Wii's 99,335. Microsoft's Xbox 360 was at a far-away 43,172, data from Enterbrain showed.

It would appear that Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (Yakuza 3) and Capcom's Resident Evil 5's combo-release had a lot to do with this sudden surge in PS3 sales. However, Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Etsuko Tamura warns PS3 fans to not celebrate all to much yet.

According to him, despite this historical sales activity of the PS3 in Japan, it will remain unlikely to be a threat to the Wii's global dominance. That's because more software makers are investing more on the Wii because of its broad market base.

Still. Hooray for the PS3!

» Hopefully this can stay fanboyless.

I think it's surprising that the PS3 outsold the Wii, I'll say that much.

But then again with heavy hitters like RE5 and Yakuza, part of me isn't surprised.

Nevertheless, glad to see the PS3's doing well in Japan. Now if only it was the same over here in the states. (Not saying it ISN'T selling well, but you get my point)

Good times to be a gamer.

YOU HEAR THAT KONAMI? CANCEL THAT STUPID SILENT HILL WII PROJECT AND MAKE IT ON THE PS3 PLEASE.

» in japan...

the only reason why ps3 has sold more is because everyone in japan already has a wii. if you were born in japan circa 06-09 you probably had a wiimote straight out of your momma's vag. that's the facts. wiki it

This man speaks the truth. It's called market saturation. The wii cant always dominate, because at some point everyone who wants one, will have one. The Wii has also had a great track record for reliability, so replacements aren't terribly common. The numbers have been edging downward a bit lately simply because of that fact.

The same with the DS and whatnot. (Sony keeps PSP numbers up by releasing new color schemes and such. Like the gold and decal'ed Monster Hunter PSP. People there are crazy enough to own multiple PSPs just to have all the decorated ones.)

PS3 outsells Wii for one month = Toddler with fist up

Just proof that PS fanboys are babies and that QJ acknowledges it.

» No...

It just proves that you have no sense of humor. At all.

by sickofitall - 2009-04-07 02:28
» yeah...

I don't know what is up with that pic either?

by napsac41 - 2009-04-07 10:00
» i kinda got it.

i think the pic was put up because the wii is well known for being a kid/family (but mostly the kid part) console. unlike the other 2 which have more hardcore mature games. so maybe the angry baby is supposed to represent the kids of the wii community being like "wtf sony, wtf..."

by damonous - 2009-04-07 10:13
» Actually...

What I get out of the baby picture is that it's "baby steps" for the PS3 in Japan (1 month on top over the Wii). And the baby represents the PS3 giving a punch-out to the Wii. ....either that, or one of the QJ Editors really wanted to show off a picture of their kid, and randomly selected an article to slap it into. :-O

» baby pic

erm.. the baby just looked cute. o_O

no subliminal, subconscious reason there...

lurves your critical reading of the pic, though! ^_^

I could't care less...is coming to PSP and PS2 so I'm happy...maybe will see it on PS3 later on..so far PSP is the way to go since the PSP needs more horror games

by astaroth001 - 2009-04-07 17:17
» nah

The Wii got outsold because it has no good game releases just as the PS3 is going up for good releases...if truk was right...than every one has PS2 also

by Charlybob - 2009-04-07 23:05
» LMAO!

Nice one Mabie, that has to be the funniest thing I've seen so far this week

I love people who just destroy things like that so easily

Though that just proved what both lots can be like really. God I hate fanboys ¬_¬

by astaroth001 - 2009-04-08 09:12
» uh?

i thinkt he 360 only outsold the Wii for one week when Star Ocean 4 was released...it went down right away...

The picture shows even a baby cries because the Wii is full of *****ty games

by ISOHaven - 2009-04-08 09:35
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

"The great, white Wii has been defeated!"

What idiot wrote that dumba$$ comment?

Anyway, good for Sony! Glad to see their numbers going up.

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-04-09 09:30
» .

I think the main reason the Wii has stayed reliable is because it's not worth turning on.

I don't even leave mine hooked up anymore.

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-04-09 09:43
» How about that?

Nintendo officially can't fake the Wii shortage anymore, since it's impossible even for them after 26 MONTHS.

Now, with LOADS of Wiis in stock everywhere, not too many gamers really care about the Wii anymore. As I predicted long ago, Wii sales will spiral downward at this point.

Nintendo's near total neglect in software development, the usual crap minigames, half assed ports like dead rising, and little support for new Wii crap accessories like motion plus mean the Wii's days are numbered.

PROOF, the Wii sales fiasco was caused by the intentional shortage combined with the stupidity of the general population.

by ISOHaven - 2009-04-10 04:18
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

1. You didn't predict anything you moron.

2. This is only in Japan where EVERYONE ALREADY OWNS A WII.

3. There is NO fiasco. Quit lying and making thing up.

You are such a child. And a lame one at that!
