Piero's Wiicross v0.1: Picross homebrew for the Wii |
Ó
There are very few Wiibrew games that make me go "wow." I have to say that this new one from Scognito is one of those games. From the looks of the screenshots alone, a lot of love and effort was put into the making of this game.
This game is called Piero's Wiicross, a Picross game for the Wii. In case you missed out on Nintendo's franchise, Picross is a nonogram puzzle game where you have to fill in squares in a grid according to clues given on the sides of the grid. The filled-in squares will eventually make a picture.
Although all the grids are only 15x15 in size, the game does offer a whopping 59 levels. Pretty well done for a homebrew game. It also features two game modes: Normal, and Free. Normal mode alerts you when you're coloring in the wrong cell, and a penalty is given. In Free mode, a penalty is only given when you finish the puzzle incorrectly.
You can also customize the game with your own music and themes. Here are the instructions from Scognito:
Music
Put your favourite songs in the “res/music” directory (for example if you use the homebrew channel it is apps/wiicross/res/music), then select “Custom” from the options menu.
Note: Music must be in ogg format! No, IÂ’m not an opensource devote: simply sndlib does not support MP3, and libogc support for them is screwed. Also res directory on GameCube must be put on the root of the SD!
Themes
A theme is composed by the following images
- background.png (640 x 480 pixels)
- filled.png (image to show when a cell is drawn)
- marked.png (image to show when a cell is marked)
- title.png (the title to show in the option screen for selecting your theme)
For helping in drawing a theme, there is a template on the project page. It also contains a psd (photoshop) and a xcf (gimp) containing layers, helpful for drawing the background, since some part of it are used for painting the timer and the preview.

This has to be one of the best looking homebrew games I've seen.
My only "wonder" is how well it will play with the wiimote.
Looks very good. I had to double check if it was homebrew or commercial! I used to love doing these... will load this one up and give it a go for sure.
