With the Wii's upcoming launch hovering above our heads like Mana from heaven (or a guillotine, depending on which console you're rooting for), a lot of unlikely groups are joining in on the hype piled up on the Wiimote, and today's choice is... TV remotes.
While it looks and weighs exactly like the Wiimote, the "Wii Television Remote Control" - as it will be called- is actually a very well-put-together Wii replica, with a few minor symbol changes to help users navigate its controls. The controls, however, should be easy enough to follow: Up, Down and the A button are used for channel switching; left and right are used for volume control; the minus button switches between inputs; the plus button activates mute mode; the power button (obviously) tuns your TV on and off. The device also runs on AA batteries.
Sadly, there's no number pad for channel jumping, and no, it's not interchangeable with the original Wiimote, having no USB port or LED sensor. It is reported to work with most brands of TVs, though a bit of control reprogramming may be in order, depending on your TV model.
This thing can't simply be bought from the store though, since it has only been released to Platinum members of Nintendo Japan's Club Nintendo as part of a special gift package for the members. The other gift was a special monthly calendar featuring artwork from Nintendo's biggest game franchises.
U.S.-based Nintendo fans will have to wait for further news regarding this "Rii"mote, but then there's always the alternative of getting a real Wiimote, opening it up, and... no. Never mind.
Next in our wish list: A PS3 controller that'll open garage doors, and unlock cars!
