Peter Moore: Wii to win console war with half the market |
Is the Wii a fad or not? In the long run, it really doesn't matter, as it's still selling like hotcakes, and still has the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 eating its dust. By the end of the console war, there is little doubt that the Wii will be on top.Just how great a lead? Peter Moore, former Microsoft exec and EA Sports head, believes that the console would have 50% market share, and the rest is what the 360 and PS3 would fight over. As he told the Times:
It looks to me as if the Wii is going to have at least half the installed base of the overall industry and the Xbox 360 and PS3 are going to fight over the balance, based on the run-rates we're seeing.
To be sure though, Moore believes that each console has something different to offer, each giving a different experience to gamers. Nevertheless, the Wii still has the upperhand in the market. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, he says:
There are all kinds of arguments about who's winning, who's losing - I'd argue that they're all doing okay. Maybe Nintendo is doing better than okay.
[...] I don't see a détente between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, because they're different experiences. When I'm playing Xbox 360 and I'm on Xbox Live, playing Gears of War, and I'm chainsawing somebody - that doesn't feel like I should be a Mii. And when I'm on Home talking to my friends with that avatar, I'm probably going to be pretty well dressed, or whatever I'd be.

Lets go Nintendo all the way to the top
I don't even count the Nintendo Wii as a part of the console race. Its appeal has nothing to do with gamers and as such...neither do the games. It is aimed at people who do not even like video games...
I also agree that Wii isn't a real console, it's more like a kiddie-console. It's not like someone is going to buy a Wii -instead- of a 360 or Ps3, they're more likely to buy a Wii for their kids and 360/Ps3 for themselves.
Yeah, because reaching into an unreached demographic is a stupid idea. Pfft, pull your head out of your ass and just accept the fact that Nintendo isn't completely stupid when it comes to marketing.
and yet i still have yet to find a fun game.. its fun for about 10 min then i go back to my ps3.
there is no "long lasting" or valuable game that i have found that i would play over and over again. and very little onlin play.
stick to your 360's and ps3's.
Sure, the Wii will win in sales, but it's not a real game console, just a child's toy. Like all children's toys, it gets used constantly for a week, then rarely if ever used.
Games are another story. If you like good games, the Wii will win nothing. Well, maybe in the "how to get uninspired games based around a single character to sell, despite never offering anything new for the last 10 years."
Yeah, that's a pretty narrow category.
And that's why thousands of every age stood out in line for the Wii on its release date, and why it's the #1 selling console on the market right now.
Almost as narrow as your point of view.
Did you fanboys actually WATCH E3 2008 for Nintendo? I mean, WOW, if I had a Wii, I would have returned it after that horrible show. All I saw was:
"My name is Reggie. We're rich as hell. Now look at these charts and listen to a bunch of crap you don't care about."
"I'm a mother and doggies r cute!!"
"ZOMG SNOWBOARDING!"
"We got a new ANIMAL CROSSING!"
"OMFG WII MUSIC!!!!"
Really, what the hell was all of that? Nintendo is trying to market their console to gamers that don't exist. Give me picture evidence of a 16 year old girl who enjoys playable a friendly game of Mario Kart Wii with her Grandpa, and then they go next door and play with their neighbors while still playing the Wii, oh, and don't forget about the family Kool-Aid.
Seriously, their marketing is just funny, but SOMEHOW
but somehow, they are selling gazillions of consoles because...
parents are more willing to buy some $249.99 or however much it costs console over a hardcore console. Sure, Wii might win in sales this time, but hardcore gamers on the Wii almost don't exist. There are VERY few games that appeal to me on that system. It's great for casual guys, like marketed, but otherwise...no.
Uuh....I completely disagree with that, but as far as the press conference goes, it was a letdown aside from the announcement of new Mario/Zelda titles in the works. As for the thing about the gamers that don't exist, my entire family, including my 70yr old grandpa who has Parkinson's and mother (who used to abhore video games) now play games on the Wii, while I still enjoy their hardcore titles that I've grown up with. So...
Seriously, this one is a no brainer, as much as I personally am not a Wii fan, you have to be pretty thick headed not to believe that Nintendo will win the console race. While I do not prefer the Wii as my console of choice, I do see it's genius, especially as far as marketing and bringing new people into gaming. I do believe the Wii has a hardcore audience but I also believe the definition of hardcore in gaming is a bit confused, some see hardcore as games that are mature, blood, guts, whatever. Others see hardcore as gaming for the enthusiast, people who enjoy good games. While Mario and Zelda may not fit the bill for being particularly mature games they are absolutely games for the enthusiast. I haven't really been into Mario and Zelda much since the SNES days, but I do understand their appeal. Fact of the matter is Nintendo has a much broader appeal to the consumer these days, which there is nothing wrong with. Nintendo took a gamble by doing something different, yet staying the same in many ways, but it paid off. More power to Nintendo.
Why are there so many people on this site that hate Nintendo and the Wii? Is it because it's outselling their consoles to an obscene amount?
People that say the Wii isn't a "real" console, or that it's for "kiddies" are, by default, stupid. Let's face it: if the Wii had the same processing power as it's competitors, and could handle the same complex engines, no-one, and I mean NO-ONE, would suggest that the Wii is a kid's toy. Therefore, these idiots care more about graphics than gameplay.
However, that is not to say that everyone who puts graphics before gameplay is a d*ck; it's just a matter of opinion. What I am referring to is that the former sort of person dismisses the Wii as a "fad" or some sh*t simply because it can't handle what the PS3 and Xbox can handle. Don't insult my intelligence by even attempting to deny it, because it's the truth.
And for those of you who rant on about "endless" Nintendo sequels that never change after "10 years" or whatever, are yous for real? Nintendo has several successful franchises that I and millions of others adore; would it be a smart move, from a business point of view, to stop making them? I shouldn't have to tell you, but no. They rake in the cash from classic game after classic game. Oh, and about 80% of games, I'd guess, have sequels. Yet it's Nintendo, who, in every console generation, make great games and repeatedly innovate the way we play games (and yes, I'm aware that they sometimes use currently existing ideas) that get slated by know-it-all 360/PS3 fanboys?
I love Nintendo and Sony. I love Final Fantasy, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear Solid, Pro Evo, Castlevania and more. I've been playing games since the Master System days.
And I own a Wii. Live with it.
Sooo hardcore, he's in 3/4 of first party games! He doesn't even need a personality since he's sooo badass!
Seriously, Nintendo only makes games for kids, homosexuals, and old people.
Yes, Nintendo's E3 was their worst yet.
But then again, Wii systems have been proven sellers, despite a HORRIBLE upcoming game lineup (even by Nintendo standards.) What's more, the online SUCKS with no voice chat, severe lag, unnecessary friend codes, and horrible games on Wiiware as well. Nintendo is more focused on selling you more crap accessories than games.
At this rate, Nintendo doesn't need to do ANYTHING with the Wii, and it still sells! Go figure!
Think the new Mario and Zelda games will be good? You can expect the same games as the last ones with 1 (possibly 2) improvements. For mario, he will probably get a new move, new levels, and be collecting stars AGAIN.
Zelda may be slightly better. Yeah, the only first party game with something resembling a story! But the game will likely come late in the Wii's life cycle and come out for Nintendo's new ripoff last gen system first (just like last time.)
Since Nintendo hates system development costs, they will recycle the Wii hardware and the big innovation will be an improved Wii mote that is touch sensitive or some crap.
"Why are there so many people on this site that hate Nintendo and the Wii? Is it because it's outselling their consoles to an obscene amount?"
BINGO!!!!
Just a bunch of kids acting out because their parents never learned to smack them when they deserved it.
According to the kids commenting here, in order for the Wii to be a real console it has to appeal to only hardcore gamers. That's not only narrow minded, it's outright ignorant. As Nintendo has proven in this generation, casual gamers out number hardcore gamers BIG TIME!!!!! In fact many hardcore gamers are ALSO casual gamers. Hardcore gamers are the minority. Which is why the PS3 isn't doing quit as good as one would think. Bluray is keeping it above water right now.
Based on pure logic along, that would make the PS3 and 360 FAKE consoles.
So far, Sony has not addressed this and that is a MAJOR mistake on their part. That's going to bite them in the ass harder then anything else in the past. Microsoft 100% agrees with Nintendo and they are fixing their mistake as we type. MS is taking the 360 console and throwing it into the casual gamer arena. Kudos for them! They have the ability to cater to BOTH hardcore and casual gamers. HOWEVER, can they pull it off? It's going to take more then adding "parties" support and Uno to their lineup.
Wow! Could that post have been any more pointless? Because we all know each Halo added ALL NEW features...right? Blah blah blah....more ignorance from Mr. Common Douche Bag.
"Seriously, Nintendo only makes games for kids, homosexuals, and old people."
More douchiness as well....
"Sooo hardcore, he's in 3/4 of first party games! He doesn't even need a personality since he's sooo badass!"
Yet another baseless argument, Mario was forged in a time where gamers only cared about gameplay, hence he lacks what you consider a storyline.
"Seriously, Nintendo only makes games for kids, homosexuals, and old people."
Blind fanboyism at it's finest.
"Yes, Nintendo's E3 was their worst yet."
Not sure about worst yet since I've only seen their past 5 conferences rather than all of their E3 appearances, but I think we can all agree it was pretty weak.
"But then again, Wii systems have been proven sellers, despite a HORRIBLE upcoming game lineup (even by Nintendo standards.) What's more, the online SUCKS with no voice chat, severe lag, unnecessary friend codes, and horrible games on Wiiware as well. Nintendo is more focused on selling you more crap accessories than games."
All systems go through a drought at some point during each year, it's been that way for ages, and since it's Summer, the chance of a poor line-up are even greater. Also, voice chat was shown at this years E3, so that statement is void. Nintendo is still new to the online game, tell me other developers didn't have trouble with the internet at first. WiiWare is meant for small developers (who probably have little experience) so of course there's going to be a lot of bad games.
"At this rate, Nintendo doesn't need to do ANYTHING with the Wii, and it still sells! Go figure!"
Good marketing, 'nuff said.
"Think the new Mario and Zelda games will be good? You can expect the same games as the last ones with 1 (possibly 2) improvements. For mario, he will probably get a new move, new levels, and be collecting stars AGAIN."
It's a PLATFORMING GAME, what the hell does that mean? Collecting and jumping, it seems to me you just don't like platforming in general, leading to your dislike of Mario games. As for Zelda, Twilight Princess gave several new elements to gameplay, introducing new characters as well.
"Zelda may be slightly better. Yeah, the only first party game with something resembling a story! But the game will likely come late in the Wii's life cycle and come out for Nintendo's new ripoff last gen system first (just like last time.)"
Story? Story.....where did I see that before....Oh yeah, Metroid! Who did Nintendo rip-off? As I recall Microsoft just announced they'll be adding "avatars" to their new dashboard design....hmmm...
"Since Nintendo hates system development costs, they will recycle the Wii hardware and the big innovation will be an improved Wii mote that is touch sensitive or some crap."
So you'd rather stay put with your buttons and triggers just the way they are, instead of moving forward in technology? Seems a little boring to me...
You hit the nail right on the head, man. It's good to see others out there who can appreciate several companies for their own elements, rather than trash talk something that's different or strange to them. I tend to disagree with "Common Sense", but that's not to say I don't love my 360, or that I don't totally gawk over my friend's PS3 (damn my money-less-ness), but I just can't stand when people are so ignorant about how the industry works and why they do what they do. But I think that what you've said makes more sense than anything else said in this topic, maybe some people will read it and take something good from it.
its a crappy console only to be use for parties and such but it is winning in sales. im a sony person myself but i do own all 3 and you can talk about how the wii has a crap games line up and that its just a fad but its a fad that every man and his dog buys. the wii is moving alot of consoles no matter what games are coming out for it (which is basicaly none mariokart and brawl are about the best). nintendo diddnt go for the hardcore gamer approach and it worked as much to my annoyance.
Yes yes, an excellent discussion on however a war where the tables will not turn because as I stated in the beginning,
Victory is ours!
In terms of hardware and games though, the Wii isn't even on the map. More good games come out for the DS and PSP then the Wii. I do have a Wii, I own Twilight Princess, Brawl, Guitar Hero (didn't want it for my PS3), Wii Sports, Super Mario Strikers Charged, and Elebits. And the only game I think I'll be getting in the future is Dead Rising. I own a PS3 as my other next gen console, and I find myself playing it twice as often. I'd rather play Grand Theft Auto or Metal Gear Solid over Brawl any day. I'm not saying the Wii is bad, I'm just saying that the other consoles offer a much more enjoyable gaming experience.
You know, it's really sad. Microsoft and Sony probably spent 5 years developing there consoles and offer tons of extra features and great looking games available and they loose yet Nintendo basically redesigns the GameCube with a few tiny upgrades and a new controller so people can now masturbate mario and they win...
Thanks bud!
It also helps to have a MS insider under my wing :) He agrees with me as well. He asked our group what we thought about the E3 press release and I basically told him the same thing. He admitted the direction MS was moving was a direct reaction to Nintendo.
...I also told him the new red controller looked like ass..... I got no response from that one :)
What's really sad is the decline in the intelligence of the general gaming public, as shown in the above post.
Hah, you know, I saw the controller and normally it would look horrible, but I have Japane serising sun decals on my consoles (including 360), so it might've actually worked for me! XD
yeah I love the wii console but wheres the freaking games man?
Time for homebrew!
Well, there ya go! To each his own :)
@Justingraziano - If you think about it long enough you might.... just might.... come to the logical conclusion that all this comes down to GAME PLAY and not hardware.
i have a wii and while the current games linup is rubbish for the 25+ years hardcore gamer like myself. i've enjoyed every minute of it except moh2 being the only half decsent fps. multiplayer. and no social meeting place or voip. it is a strong console because my mom who is now 50+ hadn't touched anything more technical than a dvd player since atari 2600 was king, she had a game on wii sports and left banging on about how good it was. she want's to come round and play the wii again. bear in mind my mom is a technophobe she's someone that thinks a computer is a toy even when her son has a 6pc firewire networked recording studio and external hardware and has an interest in c++/c# games programming and is far from being used as a toy. i doubt she would buy wii but with the internet channel she could be convinced to accept one as a gift and maybe even go online too.
Your posts are endlessly amusing. When I read them I can't help but imagine Stewie's voice reading the comment. That's what you intended though, right?
Victory is yours!
...
...
...Sorry.
Well, Nintendo know that if they want to sell a game all they have to do is put Mario in the title.
I wouldn't say this if I was the only one but, YES I would like to stay with buton and triggers motion sensing sucks for traditional 3D games, Give me buttons and a Directional pad any day. Atleast the Wii does let you use a controlller but unfortunately not for the majority. Hell, get rid of wireless too, why would anyone want to have radiation so close to their nuts? Cell phones are bad enough!
"Why are there so many people on this site that hate Nintendo and the Wii? Is it because it's outselling their consoles to an obscene amount?"
Do I need to say it again? I don't care about sales. They mean NOTHING to the consumer.
The Wii and Nintendo's "support" of it are truly pathetic! That's why it's sooo fun to rip on the Wii! Do a side by side comparison of any of the real next gen consoles in any category and the Wii fails miserably.
I think it's popularity is a testament to how stupid and easily entertained people are, really. A $50 gamecube with a new controller, who pays $400 for that? Stupid people!
While the Wii system itself is not a major letdown, as good games theoretically can be made even for the Wii, the games out now are UTTER TRASH!
Look at the time and effort that goes into a real next gen game, then compare it to the Wii's best game. Wii developers are not only cheap, but lazy.
Homebrew might just save the Wii.
System specs don't matter TOO much. However, the games must have good gameplay in the first place.
Just look at the upcoming crap from Nintendo.
Punch out - Great game! In 1987. So many better boxing games available.
Animal Crossing - looks and plays nearly IDENTICAL to the Gamecube version. Wow boring, basic online is the new feature, and the only thing Nintendo needs to call it a sequel.
New mario game! Will he be collecting stars AGAIN? Of course! What else would he do, fix plumbing?
New Zelda game - Will the Wii last that long? It will probably be released on the Wii-2 so Nintendo's fans are forced to "upgrade" to the next nearly identical console. It's happened before.
Wii ski - Tech demo quality game that's a good excuse to use the balance board that's now collecting dust.
Dead Rising - 2 year old 360 port with drastically reduced graphics. It should be an easier game with the 10 onscreen zombies the Wii can render.
New Wii sports - was the first one THAT good? Even with the depressing Wii game selection, that's a TECH DEMO, and not a worthy retail product. It should be a Wiiware download for maybe $10.
When will you try to put out a decent game Nintendo, when?
How come every one of your posts is totally unintelligent? What right do you have to call me, and other Wii owners "stupid people" when you are the one that repeatedly discredits yourself with utterly ridiculous comments? You claim that Nintendo only makes games for homosexuals, girls and old people. Surely that is enough for everyone on this site to recognise YOU as the idiot? Have you not realised by now that every time you comment, you are caught out for your lies and such? Just get a grip. I've said it before and I'll say it again: THINK BEFORE YOU POST.
Oh, and you're an *rsehole.
I didn't think of Mr. Common Douche Bag by myself. Tons of people started calling him a douche bag and it just stuck in my head.
He has no clue. He simply hates the Wii. All this misguided hate is most likely brought upon him by his guardians.
Nintendo's support of the Wii is pathetic? I assume that's supposed to be a joke??? The Wii consists of mostly first party support. Which is usually what people rip on.
He is truly clueless.
Nintendo has already put out plenty of awesome games.
As usual youa re just talking about your rear end.
If you intended to ask when Nintnedo will release games YOU will like then the answer is most likely never. Also, no one cares.
Save the Wii from what? It's the #1 selling console. It doesn't need saving.
In FACT it's your 360 that needs saving. Which is why Microsoft is choosing to JOIN NINTENDO in the casual gamer market.
Facts tell us that your opinion of the Wii is a minority opinion.
There's nothing wrong with wireless controllers, because they tend to use bluetooth, which is just a radio frequency.
Mobile phones are also not dangerous, because whenever one is produced, it gets examined by an authority (I forget the name), and they give it a decimal number rating. It has to be below a certain level in order to be cleared for mass production and sale.
I hope this gives you peace of mind! Check online too on various sites for more info on the subject.
"When will you try to put out a decent game Nintendo, when?"
Well....*looks through game library*....I think they first did it with Donkey Kong.......and more recently they did it with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so...*shrug*
I lol'd.
Just a radio frequency - Yes, this isn't a high enough frequency to do serious fast but it all adds up(and requires recharging). Depending on how high the frequency emits (I think around the 10 GHz range) you could actully fell your brain getting hot. Sure bluetooth isn't that high (I think it is 2.4 GHz) but why do yourself unessesary damage? Wireless is far too overrated.
You're right, it is smart to pay up to $400 for the revised, in demand, Gamecube 2 (wii.)
Yeah, it was dumb of me to get a used Gamecube (that happens to play the Wii's best games) for $10 on ebay.
The $400 gamecube is the best choice because it, uh, has a new controller.
Homebrew lets you play emulated classic games without the Nintendo VC ripoff prices. This does add SOME value to an overpriced Gamecube 2 that hasn't had a decent hardcore game since the original Gamecube was discontinued.
Unfortunately whether you want to use it or not, you are being bombarded by these waves anyway. So what does it matter? Just driving down your street makes you susceptible to cell phones, Wifi and the like...
"You're right, it is smart to pay up to $400 for the revised, in demand, Gamecube 2 (wii.)"
I bought a Wii on the first day. To this day I still have not spent $400 on Wii hardware.
You are an idiot.
The Wii is not a hardcore unit. So that only further proves how much of an idiot you are.
Also, adding ILLEGAL rom usage to the Wii does not give it value. Adding ORIGINAL homebrew does.
As for Gamecube 2? Oh please!!!! Don't even get me started on the Xbox v1.5.
Your ignorance shows no limits.
Yeah I know, I don't have to leave me house to get hit with them. Wireless access points are everywhere so are TV a radio signals.
ha ha Xbox 1.5, but seriously its not that bad maybe 1.80.
You know, there was a PS2.5. They called it 'PSX'. It it a PS2 with expanded media abilities, XMB, and a new shape.
Its on wikipedia, I would have bought one if it wasn't Japanese release only.
I did not know that. I'll have to go check it out. Thanks!
All consoles have launches like that, even pseudo consoles that are really children's toys.
There's a reason the PSX wasn't released here. It just wasn't much better than a PS2. The PS2 hard drive was barely supported by any games.
WRONG! The PSP had only a few swamped stores. Other then that most people walked right in and picked one up. Same with the NDSL.
Just face it, you base your ignorant opinions on BS. People OF ALL AGES love the Wii. THAT IS FACT.
The casual gamer far outnumbers the hardcore gamer. THAT IS FACT.
Casual does not equal "kiddie".
"All consoles have launches like that, even pseudo consoles that are really children's toys."
You've really outdone yourself this time, Mister Common Sense. I even doubted you could, for a while, but it seems your complete and utter stupidity has no end.
A round of applause for QJ's resident pillock, MCS!
