PAL territories having issues with VC

SonicWhen the Wii Virtual Console was announced around a year ago, Nintendo fans just went crazy. Plain and simple. Who could blame 'em? To see your favorite, almost forgotten titles on a next-gen console is definitely something to cheer and get teary-eyed about.

But we wonder if these fans, even for just one second, thought they'd be getting the very exact game with exactly the same features and all. Why? The Virtual Console has gone live in PAL territories but apparently, fans are not satisfied with the service. U.K.-based gaming site Pro-G expressed the disappointment:

We tested SEGA's Mega Drive classic Sonic The Hedgehog, and we weren't pleased with what we saw. Every PAL gamer's worst fear has been realised: Virtual Console games on the Wii are like they were when we originally played them. In Sonic's case, this means that it runs 17.5% slower than the NTSC version and features sizeable borders at the top and bottom of the screen.

Anyway, the service of course comes with a 60Hz option. Pro-G further claimed, however, that they tried to make it work but unfortunately didn't get any good results. Hmm... 50Hz, slower, bordered. Something tells us NoE would be on the news later explaining the matter. Anybody else experienced the same thing?

Correct me if im wrong but, isn't the release date for the Wii in Europe 8th December?

How can anyone else have the same problem if it isn't out yet?

I don't see what the problem is though, Nintendo needed to put PAL VC games out in Europe because of TV compatibility. There would be all sorts of problems if it was in NTSC format.

This isn't disappointing, its to be expected.

I have to say that it is disappointing, if to be expected.

I don't want to have to play poorer quality games than others, simply because of where I live.

This blows.

Oh, and yes Wii does come out in Europe on 8th December, it doesn't mean that press + suppliers can't hold of one + try it though does it?

im sure the wii can handle a simple conversion of the 60hz versions and output it in 50hz, i mean emulators on the xbox do this all the time why cant the oh so powefull wii do it eh eh?

Blame the European market then if you are dissapointed, this isnt Nintendos fault.

We dont have NTSC games here for sale do we? We have always had lower quality 50hz games since the beginning. Most TVs in Europe dont support a higher frequency. It would be logical to only have 50hz games (arent all the Wii games in 50hz mode?)

I also understand that the press can get a hold of a Wii but the original articles asks US if we are experiencing the same thing.

Since Nintendo won't take the time to convert the games why don't we all changed to one standard like HDTV. and to the person that said pal sucks actually pal is higher quality then NTSC. the problem is that for games the scan rate and resolution needs to be changed. I play pal games all the time on my xbox and the various emulators on the xbox can convert scan rates and even upscale the old genesis games to 1080i. its a shame that homebrew is still better then the official Virtual console games. I piss on Nintendo's half assed european conversions. plus i piss on Pal territories for being stubborn as the rest of the world uses ntsc.

It seems they are using the pal version of roms which is exspect. Sadly that means pal gamers get ****ed up the ass because the games were fixed for 50hz and not 60hz.

# heres my point of viewGuest 2006-12-06 07:22
i dont see why one title would cost that much since there is already a lot of "emu" for gamecube......like in SONIC MEGA COLLECTION, you get all the sonic on one disk + extras and I paid 2- bucks for it.....WTF Nintendo ?? Personnaly I own SONCI MEGA COLECTION, SONIC GEMS COLLECTION, MEGAMAN ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION, MEGAMAN X COLLECTION, INTELLIVISION LIVE, NAMCO MUSEUM, MIDWAY'S ARCADE TREASUR HITS 2,3 and of course, a GBA PLAYER with almost all the SNES translated titles like ZELDA and I cant see why I would pay that much for them in SINGLE TITLE as I can play all these disk on WII already......check them out guys before buying them one by one in the VIRTUAL CONSOLE of the WII system...........$$$NINTENDO$$$

What the hell are you talking about? Almost every new TV (by new, I mean 7 years back) in the UK/AUS has PAL-60 support.

Oh, and the Wii launched 7th (today) for Aus/NZ. UK and the rest of "Europe" gets it 8th.

# F-Zero Frame Skip - Not related to 50Hz or 60Hz Issue.Guest 2006-12-19 05:01
Here is my letter (email) to Nintendo:

Dear Nintendo,

After a call to customer services, I was advised to send my problem to you.

I recently purchased a Wii here in the UK along with a friend who also got one at the same time.

Both myself and my friend who independently found the same ERROR with the Virtual Console and F-Zero.

The game doesn’t run at anywhere near the same frame rate as it does on my Super Nintendo (UK PAL) version. The Sound runs fine. However the graphics clearly employ some sort of frame skip mechanism which renders this game unplayable. I already own the UK Cartridge version and a UK SNES and objected to paying again to play a game I already own, but did so knowing I would get good use out of my > £5.00 purchase.

My friend suffers the exact same problem and also owns a UK SNES and F-Zero. We are both over the age of 30 and experienced games players and emulation enthusiasts. Your emulation of F-Zero is not only sub standard but is bordering on the legal footing of fit for use – It is simply NOT playable.

If I do not either receive a solution to my problem, or an offer to refund the points to my Wii account, I will be forced to take further action in showing the media (IGN, Gamespot & the BBC) that the VC emulation for F-Zero is non existent. You are effectively selling the game with no mechanism to play it.

My issues DO NOT relate to the PAL 50 & NTSC 60 Hz differences, as I already own the 50Hz PAL version for my SNES.

My issues revolve around EXTREMELY poor emulation which causes the game to skip frames (Emulation running at around 10 fps maximum) – And I have proof with the following method.

I press the home button on my Wii Remote while on the main F-Zero title screen. Then when the menu appears, I press the home button again which takes me back to the emulation of F-Zero, which for a brief second displays the emulation correctly where the menu choice (in F-Zero) is highlighted and FLASHING… but after a second the flashing stops and the frame skip kicks in which spoils the emulation.

Performing the above while moving around the race track is more noticeable… When returning to the SNES game from the “Home” screen – The game’s frame rate is such that you can ‘clearly’ see how bad the frame skip issue is.

Regards,

.....
