Nintendo's Wii console has been consistent at getting the top spot in hardware sales for this generation's race. However, despite the whopping numbers, there remains Sony's PS2 at the top of the all-time charts, reigning supreme after all this years.

But even that may soon be taken away from Sony, if Michael Pachter's predictions turn out correct. According to the Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst, the PS2's and the Wii's two-year sales are "very close" through a similar year-end period. By December of this year, he fully expects the Wii to surpass the sales of the PS2.

Says Pachter,

It is likely that many investors will remain skeptical about the potential for the U.S. and European software publishers to maintain market share in light of Nintendo's amazing success, but believe me that over time, Wii households will embrace 'mainstay' third party games, such as sports games, movie tie-ins and superhero games. Thus, we believe that most of the publishers we cover will manage market share gains on the Wii over the next year.

So far, the Wii has had no problems getting stocks off store shelves, and in fact even still getting problems shipping out more to satiate consumer demand. If the Wii does succeed in enticing hardcore gamers with more action-packed games, then maybe, just maybe, we might even see Pachter's prediction come to life sooner than the end of this year.

nintendo singlehandedly save video games in 1980s but ironically ended the industry in 2010.
