Analyst Michael Pachter expects that by 2015, 7th-gen console sales will end up like this: Wii on top, the PS3 in second, and the Xbox 360 in third place. The Wii's first-place position seems like a foregone conclusion, but what about the other two?

“We think that the PS3 will capture significant market share, primarily due to Sony’s victory in the high definition DVD format war, and will end up in second place by 2015,” he explained. “Although Microsoft’s Xbox 360 enjoyed a first mover advantage, we think that its market position will fade to third place due to lack of penetration in Japan.”

Pachter also noted that by the end of 2009, he expects the Wii to have a 49 per cent share of the US and European markets, followed by the Xbox 360 at 29 per cent and the PS3 at 22 per cent. In two years' time, he expects the Wii to have slipped down to 48 per cent market share while the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be tied at 26 per cent each.

yeahh... okay..

kids love the wii thats the only reason why i could see it doing good in sales

but in games ps3 and even the xbox360 could destroy the wii any day

the way its probably going to rank up soon is:

Ps3

xbox360

other systems that destroy the wii

dead last: wii

uhh no.

if its based on gaming sure but not if you're going by sales.

by ptspyder - 2009-06-30 08:56
Thanks again Patcher...

You've managed to waste our time by stating what is already completely obvious to EVERYONE.

wii days numbered

I really would be VERY surprised if the wii is still in production 6-7yrs from now, let alone STILL on top. It's a 'fad' machine, and the longer it remains the publicity hog of the gaming scene, the more chance that it could implode the games market with its load of superfluous gimmicky software. But, regardless of my personal embellishments there , I still doubt that the wii is a long-term hardware strategy for Nintendo. Cash-grab, plain-and-simple. Eventually, people will figure that out.

...

That's totally BS. The PS3 might come on second place, but not because of the disc format. Blu-Ray has won the format war for over a year now, and it did nearly nothing to the Xbox360 to PS3 sales.

The Wii sucks, but it's popular to pretend to bowl or play sports when you could just go do it in real life, so the Wii will dominate for a while still. Still, it would be nice to see Sony's new "magic wand" thingy crush the Wii, but the PS3 would also need a price cut for that.

to damanous

are u saying that the wii, a system that has consistently been at the top of the market for almost 3 years now, is going to fade away in 6 or 7 years because its a "fad"? itll stop when nintendo makes a new system, not because people will stop buying the system and its "superfluous gimmicky software", i consider myself a hardcore gamer and i only own the wii, i own about 20 games for it and none of them are gimmicky, maybe harvest moon is a bit, but its still in my eyes a hardcore game, much more than the run of the mill shooters that are now being pumped out for the PS3 and 360, now i know im gonna rated lowly for this comment, but how many of you that rate me down will be 360 or PS3 owners that consider yourselves "hardcore" because you play games that are rated mature and have swearing and blood, not saying those games arent good, but why are nintendo games for kids? play mario galaxy, even though theres no blood or swearing and its rated E, its very much a hardcore game, whats more hardcore than a new Mario game? its a series that almost single handedly saved the gaming industry and has constantly been improved to keep up with current standards.

and damonous, please don't use big words to make yourself seem smarter, superfluous would have been enough since it would mean the same thing without gimmicky, and embellishment.... go look up the meaning of that word

by splontot - 2009-06-30 10:01
....

so when nintendo does it its a gimmick, but when sony sees that its popular and wants to use it, everyone is happy?

by Shatterdome - 2009-06-30 10:26
yeah.....

You have to realize though that the VAST majority of people out there still have not picked up a blu-ray player.

I know a lot of people that love their entertainment and are still ok with DVD's and HD rips off the net.

It will take a few years for people to start really making the switch and by then PS3 will be much cheaper and anyone thinking "I need a blu-ray player and a new console" will get a PS3. Most people though will pick up a $99 blu ray player.....

by Musev - 2009-06-30 11:33
..

"but why are nintendo games for kids? play mario galaxy"

You cant be serious? If you said that statment to someone in that context they would think you were arguing that it is for kids and agree with you

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 12:00
ey

splontot has a point...

there are plenty of games on the wii that any truely hardcore gamer would enjoy.

the problem is for everyone of those, there are 25 that are gimmicky crap, with ***** for controls.

i as a hardcore gamer waited patiently for over a year for more devs to add classic control support... to no avail. then my ex took the wii with her, and i only missed it because i stood in the freezing cold for hours to get the damn thing...

sluggish/inaccurate controls would kill a game in the 8 and 16bit days, and they still do... for me anyway.

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 12:04
yeah...

honestly, ***** japan.

first with the xbox it was it's big and heavy and the japanese don't like that... they sure love their ps3 tho.

now it's pretty plain to see it's just a cultural prejudice.

if the rest of the world treated japanese products like they do western products they would be screwed.

by truk - 2009-06-30 13:33
prejudice or just preference?

maybe the reason why japanese people dont like the xbox is because they just dont like the games? just look at the games that come out of japan. maybe if there were more RPGs and dating sims, it would sell more on that side of the planet.

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 13:54
oh i have

there are a quite a few japan only games for 360... blue dragon only came to the US as an afterthought for example.

most of the time m$ has to pay (or outright buy) smaller jap devs to get them to dev for 360, again i blame prejudice.

chicken and egg... if the japanese aren't interested in the egg, who is going to raise the chicken...

by tinjastin - 2009-06-30 14:18
patcher sucks!

patcher always sucks, his damn prediction are always and always would be wrong, at first i believe in his predictions,ex. ps3 price cut, it does not happened on April but instead would be speculated till September to November this year ... so he really sucks!

i just hope he gets another job and not be a dumb analysts who cannot predict to damn well ...

by Nineball - 2009-06-30 14:35
Has Patcher been right about anything this decade?

Seriously, he has become about as accurate as Nostradamus was about his predictions past the 19th Century. In other words, he has failed majorly. Why does this guy still have gainful employment?

by vizard00 - 2009-06-30 14:54
ok

Mr patcher i think you missed the natal episode , also the ps3 slim and cut prices with HQ an HD games

by jrsmaster411 - 2009-06-30 15:28
.....

everyone was excited for the wii also until it came out and was garbage waggle controls. But what Sony showed looks more like what Nintendo promised from launch. Plus Sony doesn't concentrate on the casual fan base so they'll put the motion controls to better use for hardcore gamers

by jrsmaster411 - 2009-06-30 15:35
so..

your getting upset at the Japanese people for not buying the 360? What would you think if someone said **** the americans, they only buy the 360 cause their prejudice. Last time I checked Final Fantasy XIII is only coming to PS3 in Japan and that seems to do pretty well over their, also the Yakuza series. Those two series alone beat out the b class rpgs microsoft has gotten exclusivity to.

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 17:59
well

that would be all well and good if americans ignored the ps3 because it wasn't a homegrown console... it's not really any secret the japanese (as a whole) are like that.

i'm not really upset at them for anything, when i say "*****" something, i've pretty much given up on caring about it. love the culture and some of the excellent art it has produced (FFVII is my all time fave game).

i'm not claiming microsoft has software that can compete in japan atm, it doesn't make business sense to dev for a console that is shunned by the majority regardless of the reason. in this case i firmly believe it's cultural prejudice.

the way i see it, they are just as ignorant as redneck white trash that would never consider buying a toyota...

i bought a ps3 and a wii, so i'm not playing favorites...

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 18:06
hahah

who is this patcher guy everyone is talking about?

i know, i know. i just found it amusing that no one that has mentioned him by name spelled it correctly.

it actually makes it look like he knows more of what he's talking about than you do. something to think about...

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 18:16
um

actually, when the ps3 came out half of the people i knew that bought one did so for blu-ray first (remember at the time it was the cheapest player)

and blu-ray winning the war will help move ps3s down the road... by shatter's own admission anyone wanting gaming and HD will get a ps3, where as otherwise they MIGHT buy a 360 and blu-ray..

you can't say blu-ray has nothing to do with it.

by rollypoly - 2009-06-30 18:19
no...

sony's approach is way better than nintendo's...

it's traditional motion capture vs an accelerometer, any one with a clue can see which will be more accurate...

by genesiscopy - 2009-07-01 08:21
lol

patcher + a program that applies patches

pachter + an analyst that works for wedbush morgan

on the other hand, whoever wins, the consumer should be the winner in the end (although in the financial side, they kinda lose)

by genesiscopy - 2009-07-01 08:25
lol again

sorry, the plus signs is supposed to be an equal sign, i had forgotten that the scripting is a little bit confusing. also i did pressed the 'enter' button (functions as "\n" in C) , altough it appears to be not displayed.

by splontot - 2009-07-03 13:34
to jrs and rollypoly
