Pachter on 2008: Wii sells 8 million, PS3 price cut, and more |

Analyst Michael Pachter has forecasted quite a few trends in the gaming industry. Now, he's dropped yet another prediction: the Wii will be the best selling console for 2008. However, he also mentioned that both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 will be having a better year than the last one.According to Pachter, his Wii predictions for 2007 was too low. He has estimated that the console will be the number one console, selling eight million units during the year. He added that if there was ample supply of the console in 2007, the numbers would have declined.
On the other hand, Pachter expects the the PlayStation 3 to double its US sales. However, it will only happen, he notes, if Sony announces a price cut by mid-year. If that were to happen, it would definitely be an interesting turn of events.
Finally, the Xbox 360 is expected to have a better year than it did last year. That's a pretty tough thing to do considering that Halo 3 gave Microsoft's console a significant boost in sales.

I wouldn't call them 'predictions', I'd call it 'stating the obvious'.
Good day, sir!

What I hate about that analysts, in general, often does predictions on their feeling. Some are thinking : "The PS3 is a great powerful machine so it will win the war." Many does not actually analyse the market, or what happened that explained the numbers and what could happenin the future. They mainly focus on the gaming world industry.
While scoring exclusive titles and having a good game lineup, I believe that there is more to it like the marketting efforts and the media visibility for example.
The reason the Wii is still so Hyped is because ever day, there is news about it in at least 1 daily newspaper in americas, europes and asia.
I do believe those predictions from Pachter might become true, but of course a price drop in consoles will rise the sales number.
Here's what I believe. Xbox360 will still sell well this year and probably will score a 3 place worldwide, but a 2nd place for america and europe. The Wii will be 1st and will still have some supply problems for at least 6 months, maybe even for the full 2008 year as more countries (like China) will be open to the Wii market.
The PS3 might be 2nd if the sales really gets a boost, while they have the advantage over the Xbox360 in Japan. But this will depend on many factor we can't predict. Will a price cut will also reflect the dropping of some features (like when they dropped the card reader, ps2 backward compatibility, etc... from the PS3)

" PS2 backward compatibility is still there too. Its just that they switched the way they do it from hardware to software emulation."
Yes for the 80GB version.
"They DID NOT DROP ANY FEATURES."
Yes they did. They dropped two USB ports, Practically all the memory duo sticks slots, dropped the HD capacity, dropped the BC almost completely for PS2 games for 40GB, and barely PS1 games.
Looks like you know nothing about the changes Sony has done. So please don't talk crap in which you know nothing about.
