Pachter: new Wii in two or three years?

Wii - Image 1Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts that in response to consumer demand, Nintendo will be releasing a new high-definition Wii within 2-3 years, breaking the traditional five-year cycle. Pachter suggests that the new Wii would have improved graphics, which would also address the hardcore gamers' concerns that the Wii is just a fad.

The prediction isn't unwarranted though. The Wii is enjoying tremendous commercial success right now and isn't showing any signs of stopping. This does bring up the question of whether it would suffer the same problems Sony is facing right now with the PS3. Right now the PS2 is even more popular than its next-gen counterpart. If a new Wii is introduced that early in the market it might be facing the same danger.

But then there's not enough leeway right now for Microsoft and Sony to release a new console in the near future. Should Nintendo choose to release a console within two or three years, they'd have the field all to themselves.

And PS3-type processor in a Wii would be pretty sweet.

» yep

agreed I would understand if it was just another sku but the only sku's I see for the wii is different colored ones

by hhj - 2007-07-31 16:52
» Yeah Nintendo is doing good with the Wii now

About 4-5 years like you said is accurate.

» don't think so

even if nintendo's recent history is full of hardware revisions, they use to be just aesthetic -taking the wide meaning, god bless the DSLite screen!!.

I definitely don't think they'll let their huge user base apart as soon as 2-3 years. even more, taking that the game catalog is still in embrionary state, I think that the true spring for the wii should come in 1-2 years, so that wouldn't be the moment for a totally new console.

» hmm

Well The PS3 is already at 6 billion, in 8 months wow. I think Sony success is coming right now. I won't be surprised if wii did make a new one.

» There is no new system

This is the same dumbass who thinks the ps3 is going to do good lol, and he thinks nintendo would mess up what they have just to make the same system with gimmicky visuals? Sorry guy the world now belongs to nintendo i think he knows that he's just trying to make the ps3 look good, but the sad thing is that gba is out selling sony right now.....oh don' tell me he forgot about that one?

by JeimuzuWii - 2007-07-31 19:36
» Interesting.

It's plausible, but I'll have to wait for some concrete facts until I believe anything like this. If this were true, and a second model was released, I wonder what the price increase would be...

by Maart - 2007-07-31 21:57
» this guy is just talking bs

Nintendo clearly stated that they would focus on gameplay instead of graphics, i think it's the right disision. So why would we need a wii with a better graphic card? it's not what the wii concept is about? same with psp and ds. the psp has much better graphics and the games on the ds are still better!

» wiitard

this is actually the first wiitard ive encountered on the web. and that is complete BS that the gba is outselling the ps3. I want a link to a credible site to believe you. and who said this was over yet? wii is slowing down slightly, and the 360 is at a standstill pretty much. And the Wii is a fad. all my friends bought a wii and i bought a ps3. they litterally beg to come to my house and play it, they love home(beta), Heavenly Sword, and all of the other cool games the ps3 has to offer. Now im not saying they dont like there wii, as they do use it to play Super smash bros., but they find my ps3 cooler and are currently wanting to buy them.

» i lol

They will not come out with a graphic overhal of the wii. This guy gets paid to make bullsh1t up. If anything, the wii is defintely going to come out with different colors (i predict summer next year, to boost sales) maybe with a packaged game like Mario galaxy + wiisports, and maybe a memory stick since they're starting to promot downloadable new games. A stretch would be to say that the wii will come out with a built in harddrive which i could see happening but more than likely it'll just be a usb hard drive. No way they'll come out with a wii with a huge graphical change. I'd be surprised if they came out with one that even had hdmi output for people with hdtvs. eh, stop making stuff up already.

» Pretty sure it's shipped

My numbers show it a little under 4. Based on console sales, and not console shipped (wich this number is used by the manufacturer to show what they have shipped to stores...) Sony makes money on those cause they are already bought by stores but not by customers

by infinitysend - 2007-08-01 04:48
» Guess what

I am going to make a prediction... in the time it takes to read this, I will have just dealt Michael Pachter a big can of SHUT THE F*CK UP. Why do people listen to this idiot? The dumb***** probably hasn't played a video game in his whole life. Nintendo DISTINCTLY STATED that they were in this for the long haul and that they weren't going to make a new system for a very long time. If anything, Nintendo is going to go PAST the 5-year barrier and try to have the Wii live for 8-10 years.

In short: NO. You're a moron. Nintendo is not making a "Wii 2." Not for a VERY VERY long time.

by Koru-Kun - 2007-08-01 05:01
» hmm..

I think it's going to have an *upgrade* like the DS did. Wii 2.0 (or WiiWii =_=) will be the same price as the original but be a little bigger and have MUCH more power maybe get rid of the Gamecube controller plugins and make a USB adapter for them.

The upgrade will most likely support HD gaming (at least 720p and 1080i if not 1080p) as well as a huge boost in processing power most likely. Additional slots for SD cards and/or additional flash memory built in.

This is all just a guess, but with the way things are going... this way is farthest from "out-of-range".

by Koru-Kun - 2007-08-01 05:08
» i wonder...

Wouldn't Nintendo just be making the SAME mistake that Microsoft and Sony did if they simply focused on different ways of gameplay and NOT much on graphics??? I'm RIGHT aren't I. I think Nintendo won't make that mistake and will almost evenly upgrade both graphics and gameplay simultaneously.

The reason they made the Wii focus mainly on gameplay is because it was the area in which most was lacking (which means they basically made their own arena to fight in) but if all they do is focus on gameplay and leave out the awesome graphics... the systems will become just as repetitive as the PS3 and XBOX360 are on graphical and power upgrades.

Nintendo clearly stated what they were doing with the Wii on gameplay instead of graphics. This doesn't mean their cutting out upgrading graphics Maart... Since graphics is where the Wii is lacking most, this will be the area Nintendo will fix next.

shiped. like ms also only states shiped ones

by no - 2007-08-01 06:59
» no

All they will ever do is change the color and make it sleaker/smaller (if thats even possible). Look at nintendos hardware history, all revisions are about looks and portability. N64 never changed, nintendo and snes got smaller, gameboy and ds got smaller and lighter.. the only thing for the wii that will change is color and maybe the size.. maaaaaybe.

by Wiifan - 2007-08-01 09:25
» New nintendo boo

Truse me. Nintendo will do whatever makes them the most money.

Expect to see new colors by Christmas. Pink will sell number one. Trust me on that.

As far as a new system...We will see 5 new Wii's before another new playstation. I wonder if the wii fans can do the math. Nope. THats what Nintendo's counting on anyway.

by mohaas05 - 2007-08-01 09:34

they should make a rainbow one so it would appeal to the people that play it.

Stop being a hater just cause the system you bought isn't on top of the charts. What does it even matter anyway?
