Wiibrew - Wii homebrew news, downloads, updates - Image 1

Great news from the Wiibrew front! Team Twiizers have done it again with the release of their Open-Source Apploader - a substitute to Nintendo's own copyrighted code - and will let you load homebrew from DVDs.

Once their DVD Access Library is out, they will also add a function in the Homebrew Channel that will let you boot homebrew from the DVD. Here is what Team Twiizer's marcan has to say about the Open-Source Apploader, with additional instructions on how to use the ISO template (also downloadable below):

Guys, this is just a base image that can be used to run homebrew from DVD. Nothing more, nothing less.

You need version 3.2 or earlier or GeckoOS to boot it, since it uses trucha. You need a modchip. You need to regionpatch it for your region (it defaults to NTSC). You need to inject whatever application you want to run into it (by default it runs a little loader that loads the homebrew channel, which must have been previously installed).

For example, if you have a version older than 3.3, you can regionpatch the ISO and set it to autoboot to have a handy Homebrew Channel loader ISO that runs as soon as you turn on your Wii, so you donÂ’t have to fumble with the wiimote when youÂ’re testing applications.

You can also inject whatever app you want into it and use it to run it. Previously people used game discs, but those canÂ’t be distributed due to the apploader. Hence why I created this image.

[...] The ISO has 32MB of space and the DOL is padded to 8MB to enable easy injection of other apps. The FST is blank. YouÂ’ll have to pad the ISO before burning it, at least to 1GB.

Thanks to fortunez for the heads up in the forums!

So wait, you need a mod chip to use this???

I thought the plan was to NOT need a mod chip.

This release isn't the hack bushing discovered a while back - that will be a different release in the future. Marcan explained it in Team Twiizers' blog:

Loading _data_ from DVDs is a separate issue and one that will be addressed with the DVD library. This is just a convenient way of loading _code_ from DVDs.

Nintendo probably already knows, but since the code is entirely Team Twiizers' they probably won't be able to do anything about it.

That's right! This is for those that wish to NOT install such things as the homebrew channel.

Here you can just run your apps from disc. However it still records the app data to your Wii. For example, it keeps track of how long you played or used the app. So Nintendo will still know if you opt into the sharing program.

Is it at all possible to access data from a DVD+/-R without a modded Wii?

Hmm, I guess it should be if Bushing discovered a way to load an ISO. But it must include Nintendo's code since Twiizers won't release anything that reads from them on an unmodded console.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

I don't know what Bushing has done but at this time it's not possible to read DVDR without a hardware mod.

Since bushing is supposedly reading ISO files it could very well be reading the SD Slot.

Anyone know what bushing has actually done?

» At this time...

Well, I said "at all possible", like will there ever be a way to read a DVDR without a chip.

I can't see it being from an SD card simply 'cause it's waaay to slow to read a file as big as an ISO. And there's no point creating a loader for modded Wiis for obvious reasons.

I'm pretty sure Bushing discovered a way to read DVDRs on an unmodded Wii and he won't share his discovery due to the possibility of pirating. Loading from an SD card is just impractical.

Making your subjects WTF!?!?!?!?!?! doesn't help get your points across.

yeah, it took me a bit to relealize that he makes all his posts start like that.

As for this tool. So this is more or less for the guys that have a mod chip, and dont want to waste the 20 blocks HBC takes up?? Seems like a waste of sorts to me.

I suppose you should also be able to then have HBC run your homebrew off the DVD as well? So you could put in your emus and ALL the roms in the disk, then save the space on your front SD card?? But at this point I have TONS of room on my card, so I cant see a reason to use this.

I am hoping that my buddy waninkoko will be able to grab the source from this and try to use it for an ISO loader anyway.

Also, I think when Bushing was talking about an "ISO" loader, he meant that you could burn the ISO onto a disk, and play it on an unmodded wii? So its not even really an "ISO" loader, so much as a softmod of sorts that lets you run the game disks. WHich means that as well would be useless for people that already have a mod chip. Which would also explain why ninty didnt care to respond.

I am still waiting (im)patiently for a USB HDD ISO loader for the wii. I have a $50 donation for the first person to release a stable one.

LOL @ Neomew for thinking his insider tips to nintendo were ACTUALLY making a difference! They pay people to watch sites like this, hackmii, wiibrew and others. I would be surprised if they have a guy in the IRC channels and on the forums already.

Eh, some people just don't feel comfortable installing homebrew on their Wii. They would prefer to just "run it". With all the scares of Nintendo updating the firmware and "maybe" bricking the Wii. But then again, just don't update until you have confirmation.

I just find it hard to believe that people scared to INSTALL homebrew on their wii would RATHER have someone open it up, void their warranty, and install a hack job drive chip so that they can NOT run TP hack and just run everything off HBC.

Maybe thats just me. My wii is a toy. I have already gone through one. I wore the laser out to the point that it would not run any games at all. I had to open it up, swap in a laser from my replacement system, install HBC, then put the laser back into the new system. So now I have a DEAD laser system just waiting for a HDD ISO loader so that I can put all my games on there and run em off that. Then I dont have to worry about the laser burning up ever again.

So, this is why I personally try to AVOID running things off the dvd drive as much as possible. If I can run it off flash, or SD then I am all for it.

To each their own I guess. I see this more as a proof of concept, and that others should be able to take the idea, run with it and make something a bit more usefull. I guess we will see in time.

Why is that hard to believe? Their modded Wii works. A bricked one doesn't.

Plus, lots of people bought their Wii pre-chipped.

They already went through the trouble of getting their Wii, they simply don't want anything else to happen to it.
