One-console future? PCGA prez predicts console makers will fall back on PC

Randy Stude, president of the PC Gaming Alliance - Image 1So many games, so many consoles. With the economy as it is, and game development getting more and more expensive, wouldn't it be easier to just have one console and get it over with?

Randy Stude, president of the PC Gaming Alliance, predicts that this will be the case, with console makers falling back on the PC as the all-in-one platform:

CanÂ’t [Sony] create a stable enough environment to specify that if DellÂ’s going to sell that notebook and say that itÂ’s PlayStation 4 [compatible] that it must have certain ingredients and it must meet certain criteria? Absolutely they could that.

Are they going to do it? I donÂ’t know. I predict that they will. I predict that all of the console makers over time will recognize that itÂ’s too expensive to develop the proprietary solution and recognize the value of collapsing back on the PC as a ubiquitous platform.

[...] The reason why Microsoft came out with an Xbox could be debated, but largely it was because they couldnÂ’t set up a sandbox that was consistent enough on the PC to be able to deliver that experience to compete against Sony, who was their reason for getting into that market.

Does that [problem] still exist? I donÂ’t think so. I think the performance capabilities probably outstrip the demand that consumers have right now for graphics [...] At the end of the day it comes down to the game play experience, not how pretty it looks.

He cites the ongoing success of the Wii and the PS2 as proof that gameplay is far more in demand than graphics. The idea of a one-platform future certainly isn't a new one. WildTangent CEO Alex St. John is very outspoken about the idea that consoles will die by 2010, and others like Denis Dyack of Silicon Knights have also expressed desire to see a standard gaming platform.

Personally, I'd love to see a standard platform happen. Easier on the wallet, and I don't have to buy more than one console just to play every Final Fantasy game Square Enix rolls out. I'm a fanboy like that.

Stude has a lot more to say about PC gaming, including its advantages over console gaming, the issue of piracy, and the rise of online distribution. Read the full interview after the source link below.

All games will eventually move on to PC but it will take at least 10+ years but portable devices like PSP and DS will still keep growing.

If you really think about stuff these are the economy killers:

-Microsoft (Because of Xbox, think about if we just had PS3)

-Google (Because of Google Adsense)

PC Gaming alliance president says PC is better... how biased is that.

How good is an open platform to make a profit, or to innovate without unwillingly lending its tools to the competition ?

How convenient is it to have a system that has so many different components the maker can't predict what will happen when a user will put the game disc in ?

How would one feel having to upgrade hardware every time a new, revolutionary game is released ?

I think that guy's having a nice dream that will never realize.

ya right.

I always hated PC gaming, why? Because went you don't have 500$ per year to put on your PC, the game:

-Are not at maxed graphics AT ALL

-LAG

-Play with keyboard and mouse (ugly BUT for FPS and strat. games)

-play on a small 19" LCD monitor in my room instead of the 42" plasma with 5.1 dolby surrong sound in my living room... and NO, I don't plan on buying a gaming PC just for my TV, my ps3 already IS a media center...

PS: PC will NEVER be strong in sales, I mean, I NEVER bought a PC game, and I played at least one hundred... If security was perfect, PC wouldn't stand a chance, so think about the 100% lack of security on PC games, lol. NO devs want to work for free you know? Consoles will ALWAYS be the top for security. It takes a lot of time to crack, and you always loose internet when cracked... (IF they can crack it... The ps3 is still uncracked by the way..., the max they did was play mario bros with lags, lol).

PC gaming = FAIL... forever...

Seriously. If the "Society for promoting Homosexuality" came out with a statement of

"Everyone is actually gay... it's true! We say it's true. So everyone had better start jumping the bones of the same sex - simply cuz it's obvious we are right"

would you say to your girlfriend/boyfriend - "Sorry, I just realized I'm homosexual and need to find someone of the same sex to live out my life with - believe me I read it in an article made by an official group!"

These articles are just as dumb as that idea above.

No intended offense to any homosexuals out there, yo.

# PC is not that bad...Shatterdome 2008-12-13 10:34
It is just geared for certain types of games, like you said....in my mind it is strategy games and MMO's....I really don't mind playing shooters with a controller.

Basically though playing games on a PC is a totally different experience than playing them on a console.....I can only site hunched over my keyboard at my desk for so long before I need to go lay back and relax on my couch.

Also, hasn't this guy paid any attention to how developers are really starting to dislike to PC because of the mass amount of piracy and their lack of profits ?

A one console future is possible, but it surely won't be the PC....

# I think you missed some of the point...zaf9670 2008-12-13 17:22
Your talk of hardware upgrades suggest that we will have a game that requires Crysis every release.

He clearly went on to state that people care about story over graphics. I agree with this too.

I don't want to revert back to Super Mario World graphics but as long as we stay around current graphics technology I am fine with that. An $800 PC can run most of the better games out there. Not at max resolution with High settings but you get my point.

Also, it would be much easier on the development of games just as much as it would be a hinder them. Think about how hard it is for them to release a game on the XBOX 360 then decide to move it to the Wii or PS3. For the PS3 they can save the textures but have to redo the whole system due to the Cell processor and hardware. Then they have to start from scratch to go to the Wii.

If we had one platform (not buying a PC and upgrading it) then they have one set processor to work on, one set of specs that can't be changed, and a set community to work with.

With the way it is now... I have a friend code that has nothing to do with my gamertag that needs a different e-mail than my Playstation Netowork name and my PC just does whatever when I play on it.

They could do system upgrades just the same as they do now. Give a console a life span and upgrade.

I know that Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft aren't gonna sit down and say "Ok! Let's make a console" because they all have different strategies.

Eventually though... Someone may pitch, "My console can give you cutting graphics, media playing capability, and the ability to design innovative technologies for this price."

Then they may buy in.

PC gaming is a great place but a one console world would be better I believe. Then they could maybe add something on to that.

That is just my 2 cents on the situation.

Are you actually thinking before you type?

No one is saying "yay one console!!"

Someone is just stating that "your spending $800+ on one system when you consoumers could just make something that is the same cost and has the capability to match or surpass your consoles."

Cause face it... XBOX 360 has 3 processors (last I checked 4 can come on a desktop) and the PS3 has its cell (which is outdated and been revamped but doesn't seem to do well in gaming).

The Wii just has a controller you can already access through a computer with Bluetooth... So what this guy is saying is "why act like your all doing something different and not find a common ground to do the same thing."

# cross-platform toolkityoshi314 2008-12-13 21:26
might also do the trick.

if console makers would focus on making a cross-console toolkit (like square's crystal tools) things would be much easier. of course square's solution is proprietary, and without a doubt, expensive but that would be the way to go .

think about it outside of the games area - you have linux. you can install it on 64bit pc, 32bit pc, mips desktop, sparc, alpha, arm , whatever.

you take a source code to some app (e.g. firefox), and if it's well written it the compiler will produce a working binary for that particular platform. quite often you can take the same source code and build a windows application out of it without modifications to the code.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

of couse this is quite a different world - i was talking about free operating systems, not proprietary games and closed platforms.

in case of consoles things would be much more complex.

single console hardware platform = monopoly. that will mean bloated prices.

second - console makers and game makers don't create games/hardware to make their fans feel good ( despite from what their PR teams tell you ) but for money.

sony holds a tight lock on their platform, so that they can excercise their monopoly on it. it's the same as it was on ps2 - only sony had the technology to press valid ps2 discs, and that probably hasn't changed with introduction of ps3.

same goes for other console makers. maybe except for gp2x guys, they made an open console from the very start.

Ya, PC's have quad core processors....find me a game that actually uses them, yet alone efficiently....not happening...

Oh the PS3 JUST has a Cell....ya, check out the worlds fastest super computer, run on Cell processors...not Intel...

What he says is valid, just because some biased party comes along and says what they beleive should be the way it is, doesn't mean it's right or even plausible...

# gp32xShatterdome 2008-12-13 23:58
Doesn't count as a console/handheld...

I love the idea of gp32x, and moreso of the new Pandora....problem is, if you thought PSP had a lack of good games, Pandora will be even worse....

They will never have a mario kart, or a metroid, or a wipeout or a loco roco.....because no homebrew dev will put that much time into it. If it takes a team of proffessional programmers and artists 2 years plus to come out with these games, how long do you think it will take some programmer in a basement that doesn't know how to draw ?

Seriously, best you will get is ports of quake, whoopee....

Those platforms are really not meant for games, but just toying around and having ultra portable linux....

Sony won't move to PC's for gaming, they have the Sony range of PC's but this would take away the competition with Microsoft in the gaming market on account of PC's being windows based.

Sure you have OSX and Linux, but these are not as widley used as Windows and I can't see people moving over to another OS on that basis.

The console gaming market is it's own, I would say its seperate from the PC gaming market which is much more hardcore, and I would hate to see a single console future and don't think we will. Where theres a niche theres a product, there will alays be demand for them.

# If Gaming has moved AWAY from the PC...damonous 2008-12-14 03:01
...why would it EVER move back? --Really, what's the logic there? Also, I think it's humorous that the QJ articles states that Randy Stude also uses the Wii and PS2 as examples of why gameplay is more important than graphics. ......They are also BIG examples of why people like plug-and-play CONSOLES. Because the last time I checked, the Wii and the PS2 were CONSOLES, not PC's. Let's look at just the PS2 for a moment: over 110,000,000 units sold and counting. ...Is he seriously trying to suggest that some day we will have a stable enough PC platform (that won't also be hacked) that will guarantee 110,000,000 people the same experience, with the same controller-hardware? ...That's just INSANE on the face of it, especially since history PROVES it to be wrong. I mean, it's not like we've never seen PC gaming attempted before. Last I checked, PC games were even still made, but didn't sell nearly as well as Console games. ---This is just more 'disguised Microsoft propaganda', I believe. And one thing is pretty much for certain: IF there ever WERE a unified PC gaming platform, it's not going to run Windows. ;-O

On a pc I have to sit in front of the friggin monitor. One my ps3 I can sit back and chill on my couch, with a drink on the center table, and enjoy the action (with RUMBLE) on my Sony Bravia (with surround sound of course).

And if my friends come over we can all sit on the couch and play against each other. With PC they have to bring their friggin laptops over, and its a pain in the a$$.

PC ftl!

# Future of Gaming and ComputersDaisako 2008-12-14 21:38
Okay, first off... gaming has went away from the PC lately... this is evident from looking at what is selling and how game companies are releasing to the PC last. The problem with the PC is that there is too much variety and therefore even if you do save with the PC in the development side, you lose a lot more in the support side, and support is a staying cost with patches and phone support... no one wants to support a company who can't support their own products. On consoles, the only problems that are had are a few tiny bugs that need patching which will exist in all versions of their software and then there are the people who get a copy of the game that doesn't work at first which can be solved by sending a new copy or just by telling them to take it back to the retailer. I see games as going more towards consoles because of the shift in what is happening on the PC... the PC is becoming more Internet based and focusing on smaller types of applications. Applications on the computer are moving towards online applications which are run through the web browser to increase interoperabilit y. Soon it will not matter what operating system you are runninig, the stuff will just work due to this. The place for game consoles is becoming more of a full media center and I feel with the next release of the consoles we will see this even more. Because of this, we will see more game consoles sold because they will do media and play games. The most successful of these will be the ones that appeal to more market, which will be the ones that have more multiplayer/cooperative games. Also, there will not just be one console because that would be terrible for the gaming industry due to to essentially a monopoly and also gamers with different desires (like in the current generation).

This is all of course what I think though, you can take it with a grain of salt.
