Offer refused: LT approached, turned down Madden 08 cover?

Thanks... but no thanks, says LT. - Image 1According to CNBC's "multiple industry sources," San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was approached by Electronic Arts with the Madden NFL '08 cover offer, but he turned it down. And, according to those same sources, it wasn't because of the curse.

It's all about the Benjamins.

That's something that you wouldn't hear out of EA - Marketing Director Chris Erb told the San Diego Union Tribune that "Vince (Young) was the guy all along," CNBC notes. But, according to those "multiple industry sources," LT was asked of his interest in becoming the cover boy for the coming Madden NFL installment, and frankly, they made an offer he could refuse.

The deal usually pays the cover athlete $100,000 to $200,000 and requires multiple appearances to pump up the game. Since the Madden game sort of sells itself, the athlete on the cover doesn't really matter that much, but expect more NFL stars to turn down the cover in the future, not because of the curse, but because the price is just too low.

As CNBC wryly notes, the Madden NFL franchise has become this generation's Wheaties cereal box. For EA, they believe that athletes would be honored to grace the cover of a video game. For the athletes, on the other hand, well, it is an endorsement contract, after all. Welcome to the negotiating table.

Wonder how much EA will be willing to offer the guy for '09?

Not really a compliment anymore. That football series sucks.

Its the same thing re hashed over and over and over.

I think they have had the same exact over head view for EVERY single madden game. Just improved graphics for the most part and added features here and there.

Guess thats what happends when only 1 company can make a game... It sucks .

Now instead of gamers, EA is taking athletes for granted too.

What are you complaining about? 200k for getting your picture on a game and doing a few PR jigs. The cover guy should be paying THEM for that privilege! They all get over paid and underworked as it is. Sports "stars". bleh.

they probably work harder then you do every damn day. EA makes MILLIONS off this game... they are right to turn down such a small amount of money for the product they are endorsing. AND required to make appearances??? lol EA can go to hell.

These guys are just spoiled brats. The millions of $ they make each year is retarded. They play the game because they love it anyway. It's all over rated. They exert all that energy but get nothing truly done, unlike the jobs that the rest of us have where the work we do shows a real needed value.

If you can be better athletes then them then shut the hell up, and go do what they do, if you dont feel you get paid enough. I bet you wouldnt last 2 mins on the field.

And whether you like it or not, not everyone plays for the "love" of the sport. Its a JOB just like any other job out there... who are YOU to say someone is overpaid for what they do?? Especially when it takes so much talent to do what they do... get over yourself. Youre just jealous.

If Shaun Alexander and Vince Young did it, it must be for a reason, and it's the honor. LT wanted to win the ring last year for himself, evidenced by his behavior after their loss to the Pats. Selfish.

The point is that athletes really don't get anything done in the big picture. That's what he's trying to say

For example, what do loggers (very under payed and overworked job) do? They cut down trees. What do truckers (again, very under payed and overworked) do? They take the trees to factories where they're made into paper. What is paper used for? JUST ABOUT GOD DAMNED EVERYTHING

I don't exactly agree with his point, but it makes sense somewhat. For the most part, athletes (specifically Football players) just provide entertainment for stupid frat boys.
