NPD preliminary data: Wii leads January hardware sales in US |
Ó
According to the preliminary data of the NPD group, the Nintendo Wii leads the January hardware sales in the US. Apparently, it has sold 436,000 units throughout North America. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is in the middle with 294,000 units sold, while the PS3 isn't far behind with 244,000 units. This preliminary data was allegedly released by Microsoft and has not been officially confirmed by NPD. Molly O'Donnell, group manager for MS' entertainment and devices division said that "Xbox 360 had a fantastic January, and we feel great about our position in the marketplace".
She also added that the X360 experienced an 18% rise in sales compared to the same period last year. We'll be sure to give you more updates about this in the coming days. For now, we all have to make do with this piece of "preliminary data".

If the data is correct it is the same pattern for the Wii as in Japan but a reversal for second place now 360 is Second spot and PS3 is last.
But the amount of hardware sales in the USA is huge for all Three consoles compared to Japan, Japan seems like smallfish for hardware sales in comparison.
USA has double population than Japan.
I'm glad Nintendo is doing well. They deserve it. The 360 is doing good too. The PS3 is doing ok. It could've done better but no games came out in Jan. so it's to be expected. It'll be interesting to see how the numbers change through the months.
Was going to say the same thing, Practically no games for Jan yet it sold pretty well.
I think alot more will be sold probably in March.
It's surprising that the PS3 sold so close to the 360 considering there were no major game releases, it's $200 more, and There isn't much out for it now (besides Resistance).
I expected the PS3 to do much better considering it was hard to get before Christmas and I'm sure a lot of people missed out. Sony only distributed 600,000 in 2006 with the remaining consoles being delivered in early January.
I guess they can look on the plus side, they sold 244,000 Blu-Ray players.
The 360 on the other hand had no shortages during the holiday season and still managed to pull a good result. It's continues to remain strong even though 2 brand new products are on the market.
The Wii is limited by supply and probably could have sold a million with demand still quite high. I'm expecting demand will cool down in a couple of months but the Wii is going to continue to lead the market in sales for the rest of the year.
is doing really well. That's cool to hear that it's able to push units well even with two major competitors. I'm sure Gears is still driving sales out the azz.
Its proberly because its still a new machine and as Japan has shown the interest wears away then the sales will level out, so lets wait and see.

wii dominating
umm, pls correct me if I'm wrong with the prices... but...
wii = 250$
xbox = between 300$ 400$, so I'll say on average 350$ although I'm sure there are more ppl buying premiums than core
ps3 = 600$ (since it seems everybody has ps3's for sale, but not 20gb systems)
now...
436,000 x 250$
294,000 x 350$
244,000 x 600$
=
109000000
102900000
146400000
of course, nintendo isn't losing money like ms or sony for each system sold, BUT, if you're just counting how much they grabbed from consumers, sony has actually been most successful
