NPD: gamer girl population on the rise |

A new report from the NPD Group shows that the population of girl gamers is increasing.Eh? Girls play video games? Kidding, just kidding.
So does that mean we'll see more fangirls shouting "PWN!" when playing Grand Theft Auto IV online? Probably not. The report shows that girl gamers are more into social networking and virtual world online games.
Then again, the survey was only limited to the age group of 2-14. According to the data, tweens (aged 9-12) comprise the age group that are migrating to video games, looking to interactive gaming to look for friends while stuck at home. Young teens (13-14) are also included in the girl gamer population.
The report found that the most popular subjects for girls of all ages are fashion, clothes and accessories, books, music, and videos. Looks like Boogie was right on the money when it announced its sequel, Boogie Superstar, which is aimed at girls.
Doubtless the rise in their numbers were helped along by the rise of the Wii, and the increased popularity of casual games. From there, and judging from the points of interest that the survey found, I doubt we'll see a rise in hardcore girl gamers anytime soon.

I think girls prefer "casual" games. They are more likely to play Wii or DS games. That's at least my experience.Of course there will be always exceptions, but in general they don't like violent games such as GTA IV imo.
Not to support prejudices, but well, it's the truth.
There not really gamers, they are casual games. even the girls i know who play games like gta4 and halo, thats all they play. its all they ever play. its like they found something they like and they never move on. oh and the play guitar hero and rock band of course.
Of course im just talking about personal experience here. i could be off the mark.
i know 2 women that play ps3 online 1 plays cod4 the other plays rainbow and both are in there 20s but you are right about them not moveing on to new games.
well, Like I said there are exceptions. My sister plays GTA IV, too. The funny thing is, she only drives with the cars or flies the helicopter, but she never kills people. And she plays Spore and Pokemon.
On the other hand, she plays Resident Evil and CoD4. She isn't really typical gamer. She just plays what's good in her opinion.
There are many hardcore girl gamers out there, and a lot of them can probably kick a lot of our arses. And no, just because they're good doesn't mean they weigh 250 lbs. and have acne all over their faces.
Gamer girls have existed since gaming itself. Do you guys honestly think most girl gamers will reveal the fact that they are girls when you encounter them online? They don't use mics often and don't type or anything because they know the sexual harassment they'll receive from tons of socially and sexually neglected idiots out there.
I'm friends with girl gamers in real life and online. Sure, it might seem like they would prefer "cute" games like Mario and Zelda, but there are hardcore female versions of fps_doug from Pure Pwnage out there, believe me.
... Ms. Jones loves to play Counter-Strike and other FPSes and she also likes to play fighting games like Street Fighter and stuff

Isn't playing what's good in their own opinion what makes *any* gamer a gamer? I would think that would be typical behavior of all of us.
