Nolan Bushnell: bigger, faster, better isn't innovation - Image 1Nolan Bushnell, the man who created the video game, started a media frenzy when he let slip many a jagged word about our today's games. Bluntly put, he said games today are nothing but "pure, unadulterated trash". That, however, wasn't true for every game, and Bushnell knew that.

Clarifying "pure, unadulterated trash," the founder of Atari pointed out that he was describing those games that were repetitive and mundane.

"ThereÂ’s a lot of people think that bigger, faster, better is an innovation. ItÂ’s not. ItÂ’s just bigger, faster, better," said Bushnell in an interview.

The creator of Pong enumerated several games that upon first look, could easily be considered different from the rest. Games such as Will Wright's Spore, Konami's Dance Dance Revolution, Alexey Pajitnov's Tetris, and Harmonix' Guitar Hero were all named in particular.

"When you pick up the controller of the Wii, you know that you havenÂ’t done that before. Even though the bowling is the same, doing it on the videogame, using the Wii controller, thatÂ’s an innovation," he added. Obvious differences aside, there were many other unsung heroes in the gaming industry. These many games continue to lie buried in the outpour of mainstream games.

More developments on this as they drop by.

» I think he's just mad that most of his companies games suck now

There's so many ways to bash what this guy says is innovation. Like how when he's saying games that are innovative he lists two rhythm games, one that uses your feet and the other your hands. I love how he mentions his 'uWink' stuff as innovation, 1) who plays truth or Dare aside from 10 year olds? 2) if I were to play truth or dare and someone was like "Hey lets use this touch screen to play" I'd probably tell them that's one of the stupidest inventions I've seen.

And I'm not bashing the Wii but when I first held a Wiimote I didn't think 'wow it's nothing like I've ever done before', I thought 'wicked it's like having all the arcade machines in my house' On Halo 3 (and FPS in general) he says "I think my thumbs have gotten too slow, I’m not good at them anymore" So pretty much he's just a whining noob lol

This guys interview made as clueless as Jack Thompson in my eyes. He talks so much about innovation but then says "in its deification of antisocial behavior, is where I heap the most of my scorn" referring to GTA...When I played GTA3 was one of the few times gaming where I thought 'Now this is something I've never done with a game' Same thing didn't happen with Vice City but once San Andreas was released I had the same thoughts lol

» Nolan Bushnell is an attention whore.

He's just trying to make people pay attention to him so his new business venture isn't a complete and utter failure.

On a side note bigger, faster, and better had me thinking of shooting the entire arsenal from Ratchet and Clank Future at him.

» Id like to first state.....

That i credit the creation of video games to Ralph Baer and secondly, when they say better, doesnt that mean the games better. how could it be trash(meaning worse then older games) if he himself agrees that they are bigger, faster, and "BETTER"? This of course would require older games to be worse then trash.

» MEH

What has his company been doing lately huh? Exactly. I'll play what I like, he can take his old wrinkled up ass and jack off in the back of his mother's cave. =P

» pong was trash

but for everything we need a start.

Anyway, if games are trash, I wonder why I play them, does that means I'm trash too then? So he's insulting me? And all the people who're buying the games? humm, I hope he already had friends because he won't make a lot now...

ps: Pong on the ps1 was kinnda fun for an hour or two with a friend.

» lol at washed up entrepenuers

I think Mr. Bushnell is paid by Nintendo. Every time he comments on videogames he promotes the Wii. I'm sure he needs some side cash since his U wink restraunt chain will go out of business soon with its pathetic 1 location.
