Nintendo's controllers: History makers

Wii vs SNES controller

How does a classic compare to a classic? Interesting query, eh? We won't be giving you some philosophical take on that, but rather, we'll let you decide through these pictures we harvested from Engadget.

These are images of the Wii Classic controller being compared to its forebear, the classic SNES controller. Apparently, the Wii controller is thicker than the SNES controller, and sports a more pristine design, with its all-white theme. While the SNES controller's purple buttons scream retro, the translucent ones of the Wii reeks of modern design.

Of course, with today's games having more demands in terms of control, there's now more than just the basic d-pad, select start, X, Y, A, B buttons. On the Wii controller, there are those joysticks added in, as well as those shoulder pads. More buttons equal to better functionalities? You tell us.

At the end of the day, it's not really about making comparisons to determine which is better. But actually, it's more of paying tribute to the history of gaming, and how it's evolved to the one we know now, by letting the controllers tell the story. Anyway, either way, they're still both classics.

I got into Nintendo House and was able to bring out the following: All the early Wii titles laid bare... easy to digest breakdowns of many early Wii titles about to reach the UK.

I have rechargable AA's doods, why the heck didnt you cut the cord. I for one thing this whole 4 controllers for one system is less than elegant.

For Nintendo doesn't this seem odd? Wiimote, Nunchuck, Wavebird, Classic....... they should have added a few more buttons so you could use the classic controller for gamecube too and made it wireless. then it would have been either wiimote +/- Nunchuck, or Classic controller.

STOP THE INSANITY!

I also must say that I have a hard time spending $5 on NES games and $15 on N64 games. lol lol Rainbow pride.

The classic controller plugs into the wiimote, which is wirelessly connected to the Wii. So keep those rechargable AA's ready as you'll be needing them ;)

"On the Wii controller, there are those joysticks added in, as well as those shoulder pads."

IIRC, the SNES controller has shoulder pads as well.

5 bucks is a great price for NES games, especially when some ***** pawn shops in my area like selling Mario 3 for 40 dollars. I'd much rather my money go to Nintendo's pockets.

The classic controller is basically wireless, in response to whatever tool was whining about wires up there. It plugs into the bottom of the wii remote. Why would Nintendo put bluetooth in absolutely everything and drive prices up?

I think some people need to calm down before digging up reasons to hate it.

generally if you want four players you're still going to need four controllers - I know, a hard concept for your brain, but it's ok

and if you have a hard time spending $5 on NES and $15 on N64 games then DON'T purchase them

# PAL vs NTSCGuest 2006-11-30 17:07
these new classic controllers are very close to the SNES dogbones, could not be any better :), I like the PAL release of the controllers though with the A,B,X and Y buttons being blue, green red and yellow. Purple is for sissies

If you look at the picture, you can see a couple smaller buttons on the top of the classic controller towards the center. At least, I think they're buttons.
