Nintendo working on a Wii storage solution, but it won't be external

Nintendo working on storage space solution for the Wii - Image 1It's become pretty plain to most gamers that the Wii doesn't have the storage space to keep all those awesome downloads you've been picking up from the Wii Shop Channel.

That being said, Laurent Fischer, the same Nintendo representative who said Wii Storage space was a concern only geeks and otaku had, recently uttered some surprising words: Nintendo was working on a solution to the storage problem.

To quote Fischer, "We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it's something that we're working on."

The question now is, will it end up being an external solution? Fischer says, to our surprise, that it isn't:

Definitely there's no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area. It's very obvious and we're perfectly aware of it, but there's nothing we can say beyond this.

When pressed further, Fischer explained that he wasn't yet privy to the details, as a development team in Japan was working on the solution.

All in all, it's a particularly cryptic answer that leads us to think that they may be opening up SD card functionality or perhaps a Flash drive solution. Here's to hoping E3 will have an answer for us.

# Flash drive solution, eh?Scarface88 2008-06-17 10:43
Interesting... it would certainly save me shelling out for an HDD.

Maybe, just maybe, this is why there's a Wii shortage... adding an INTERNAL solution.

It will probably be able to run channels and such off the sd, so maybe not internal or external hdd.

# Seeing that Wii Sd cards sells at 60$...Goglu666 2008-06-17 13:27
They'll probably open up SD functions and promote their official Wii Sd cards wich cost 60$ fog 1gb, or offer a Wii USB key that can holds a few gigs.

I would think that they are going to jus open up the SD slot. They can add functionality to allow larger cards in. Maybe support up to 8 gb. You can then buy a card for under $100 and have TONS of room. All they need to do then is work it out so that there is a certain amount of space left on the internal memory. When you boot a channel that was installed on the removable media it just loads it into the internal flash so there is no speed issues. This would account for cheaper media.

the only other way to do it is to bring a new wii model out. They have hinted before at a DVD capable unit. And Ninty always had different colors in their ads before. So some time around october would be a GREAT time to release the new and improved Wii system.

They're not going to give you anything that will work on your existing Wii. They're just going to release a new version of the Wii with an internal hard drive. They'll just rip the HDD out of some 30gig iPods and pop them into the upcoming Wiis.

It will come out this coming holiday season.

# what about network storage?lavino 2008-06-17 18:43
have an app you download on a PC/Mac that will get picked up by Wii's Wifi/network and access as a network drive? Humm... doesn't sound too Nintendo's style so may be not =(

While that's a neat idea, it would be far too complex for the average to newbie level computer user. Nintendo is all about making the technology accessible to users.

Also, that idea excludes people who don't have computers. (I have personally known people who have consoles AND internet, but do not have a computer.)

The SD card idea seems more likely given the rather vague statement. I certainly hope they aren't re-manufacturing the Wii. I can't really afford to buy things twice, that's why I still have my original Fat DS even though the L and R buttons don't work anymore.

# If they release another model...Goglu666 2008-06-18 03:35
I'll exhange my Wii and my 50 games for a PS3. There's no way I'm buying another Wii. They made me mad so many times, when will they get good online? When will they bring good channels? Whit the current stats, it proves that 3rd party games, no matter how good they are, does not sell that much on the Wii. When only 1% of owners buy a game like boom blox and they say they meet expectation... we are far from the 10-20% who bought GTA IV on the other systems. I fear we will never see such games on the Wii, unless Nintendo makes them.
