Nintendo Wii Graphics: It's Only the Beginning |

No doubt, Nintendo stole the show at E3 this year with the impressive showing of its state of the art game console, Wii. Unrivaled in it's innovative concept and design, Nintendo wants to keep its edge by continuously making changes.They've teamed up with Array Technologies Inc. (ATI), the team responsible for the Flipper chip in GameCube, to provide the "Hollywood" GPU for the Wii. When asked to provide more details about the project, John Swinimer, Senior Public Relations Manager of Consumer Products said, "I'm really not here to talk about the design specs...other than the fact that ATI worked closely with Nintendo. The team that worked on this chip also worked on the Flipper chip that was in GameCube, and they've been working with Nintendo for a very long time so there's a great chemistry with the two teams working together."
Although ATI is also the makers of the GPU on Microsoft's Xbox 360, Swinimer says that there is no sense making a comparison because they are different chips for different platforms and uses.
Industry sources have already commented that the Wii GPU would be slightly more powerful than that of the GameCuBe by approximately 2-2.5 times.

So basically the graphics would be like the xbox?
They were talking about the Xbox 360, and no they are not based on the same chips. Dammit I hate when people don't read!
ATI has a history of greatness, and I for one thought that the graphics on the gamecube were cleaner than on any other system. The Xbox only slightly compares. PS2, don't even get me started on their dated graphics. Even if the Wii's chip is only slightly more powerful, then thats enough for me. I can't wait for the Wii.
I agree with # 2. The gamecube provided spectacular, clean graphics. Every game lit up on the screen and If the Wii is only slightly better, that will be enough for me
Cool! I dont really care about superior graphics I can do with this. In my view its all about the gameplay and how the games turn out!

Really graphics never really impress me they could always be better. In this current generation I've said "wow" twice. Once was when I saw the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5, the fact that you could see the threads on Akira's cloths, and the pores on his face impressed me. To the same effect I was incredibly inpressed by Sonic Wildfire and Zelda: Twilight Princess, at first I thought I was watching FMV rather then in game graphics. I remember one picture where they showed a picture of Sonic WildFire and Sonic Next gen, and while Sonic Next gen did look better you could still see the ridges on Sonic's shoes in Sonic Wildfire. Really the graphics do stand up, much like in the current generation. The PS2 is the weakest of the three, yet look at how everything turned out.
so much for Wii haters saying that its just a GC 1.5, Wii is gonna be crazy its 2-2.5 times more powerful than GC so thats gonna be good AND it has that crazy wii mote for crazy gameplay, come this fall PSWii FTW!
To #1/#6: do you really believe anyone really considers building a "next gen" console with hardware equivalents from 5+ years ago? Where's your common sense in that pire flameing? Thought so...
The only fact that compares Wii to Xbox gfx might be the resolution. If I'm not mistaken, the gamecube already offers e.g. more video RAM than the Xbox, so even the two consoles of the "last/current gen" don't even compare.
On the other hand: the grafics processor on the Xbox360 is about a year older than the one that ATI will build for Nintendo. Take a grafics card from one year and compare it to a card that ist a year older from the same manufacturer. Will the new one be less powerfull? So we could even think about Wii grafics being superiour to Xbox360 gdx

Anyways, Nintendo has made it clear the graphics aren't the strong point with the Wii. They have made no effort to cover that up, and that is good. I'm happy with the innovation for once in my life and not to concerned with graphics.

honestly from what ive seen the wii's gfx are ***** and the 360's are better by far from what ive seen but idc ima still get me a wii and a ps3 but i just hate when fanboys just say gc gfx were better den the xbox because the truth is the xbox was better by 2 times?? no not 2 times of course but the xbox was still better... the dont matter bout wiis gfx i wanna get a wii anyway looks new and creative and ill get a ps3 for gfx
No....not the xbox moron. The xbox's gpu was built by nVida. Its the 360's gpu that was designed by ati, so no, it wont be like either.
game cube gpu is 162 xbox is 233 if its even 2 x mor powerful the well be 324 at the lowest the wii well be a little next gen and you well be able to tell a dif xbox to wii
my ati grafix on my pc run a 595mhz (gpu) and 550mhz(memory) like so the wii's will stand up to that! So it compares in pc terms as able to run bf2 everything on high at the highest res.....thatll do me
Dude grow up Xbox has ps2 and game beat. xbox 360 who nows becaue wii and ps3 is not lout yet
