Nintendo U.S.: Mario Kart 64 doesn't need patching

Screen capture of the Wii's Virtual Console - Image 1Mario Kart 64, playable on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console, was reported to have an issue (aside from the ghost save issue) when you leave the selection screen idle for too long. While the source of the issue cannot be pinpointed, some gamers have become curious as to whether their game, obtainable from the Virtual Console Shop, needs patching.

There was a flurry of people who soon followed a how-to video for patching their downloaded games. The video was available in Youtube, but it's nowhere to be found as of press time. (hmmm...could it have been taken down? But why?)

Anyhow, the video supposedly demonstrated how by going into Virtual Console and selecting the game from under the heading "titles you've downloaded," you will be able to download an update if one is available.

However, reports milled about that most Wii players could not find anything on their download options. Perhaps those reports are coming in from U.S.-based Wii gamers, since an e-mail reply from Nintendo's Greg Hamilton to Matthew Wirgler of Advanced Media Network said:

I did some checking, and we don't have any updates available for Mario Kart 64. I also didn't find any known glitches with the game. If you could please let us know the problems that you're having with this title, we'll be able to look into this matter further to see if anything can be done.

But someone from Australia has claimed that he could see the "Update Button" on his Wii. The existence of the video, even for a short while, is enough to prove that perhaps other countries may actually have updates to their games.

» Easy solution

This is all the evidence we need to prove that a centralized shop channel is needed. One channel for the whole world, with games becoming available to everyone at the same time. The pacing of releases still works because there would be added time for the different ratings systems required by region. Also, users could get foreign versions of games at release, and possibly translated and localized versions as updates.

» Patching MK64

I live in NZ, and the patch screen showed for me.

We actually had "Patch for Mario Kart 64" as a news headline on the VC over here, which led me to said screen.

» update

I'm from the UK and the updated mario kart 64 appeared on the shop with the description about the problem, if America doesn’t have it, then it could only be a PAL problem.
