Nintendo: US$ 100 PS3 price cut won't make a difference

PS3 grill - Image 1With all the hub-bub about Sony slashing a hefty chunk off the PlayStation 3's price tag along to the tune of a hundred greenbacks, it's not surprising that its competitors have their own take about this sudden move of the legendary company.

One of its two biggest rivals, Nintendo, has a rather dim view of the price cut, the opinion presented by none other than George Harrison, senior vice president of communications in the big NoA.

So what's his take? Simply put, he doesn't think that the $100 price cut is anything to worry about. "A $100 price drop won't make a difference. Can Sony afford a $200 price drop? I don't think so."

Certainly strong words from Nintendo's senior vice president of communications. Although to be fair, even with the US$ 100 drop, the PlayStation 3 is still the most expensive console in the market today, clocking in at about US$ 499 per pop.

And it's not just Nintendo giving Sony lip. Other than the rather mysterious Project Falcon, Microsoft Spokesman David Hufford had this to say about a price cut: "
If you don't have the games, you have to worry about price. We have the games."

Boy, these game company executives sure doesn't mince their words. It doesn't help that PS3's exclusives have chosen to be not so exclusive, are thinking about not being exclusive, and in a recent case about a certain katamari-rolling prince, have opted to be exclusive to other game consoles. Let's wait and see how Sony will respond to this.

» ps3 most expensive?

i am sick and tired of everyone saying the ps3 is the most expensive system. good ol' microshaft actually has the most expensive. the reason i say this is because the ps3 plays hd movies straight out of the box. with the 360 you have to buy the add on in order to play hd movies. so if you take there $400 dollar console and add the $200 dollar hd player that no longer entails sony to have the most expensive system. and in my opinion the 360 does not seem one bit next-gen.

so come on microshaft fan boys keep on ranting!

» did you expect any thing else?

I mean come on! What competitor is going to praise their competition? Did you honestly expect Nintendo to send a rep out to say "OMG Sony just dealt a huge blow to us! This could be serious... AHHHH!!!".

Nintendo is competing with ps2 on terms of graphical capabilitys. Ps3 is in 2 wars right now and its price cut is making them sweat. Its only a matter of time before this corny way of playing games becomes something that use to be fun. Play wario ware and you would see would im talking about.

» Common Sense market analysis

Because the PS3 can never maintain any decent sales over time, it just spikes. Some people that were holding out for a lower price may get one all at once now, but sales will go back down to the usual pathetic levels again in a couple weeks.

PS3 sales spiked when it launched in each region then quickly fell, and I don't see how this price cut would be any different. If they keep losing exclusive games to competitors and even the big name games' futures are doubtful (like MGS4,) this will continue to hurt the PS3.

Sony would have had a much better chance by only releasing the 60gb model in the first place for $500, or by listening to me and forgetting blu ray and releasing 6 months earlier for $400. It's common sense man!

But the 100$ will make a difference, it seems as what you get is more for less. A good value, the only thing missing is exclusives and good software lineup. (Let's face it, it's pretty thin right now)

If you compare the vgcharts, from lets say, day1 of the launch from xbox360 till it reached 4 Million - its about 7 Months. Now compare it to PS3 - from Day1 to an estimated 4 million (atm its slightl under it) - its about ALSO 7 months.

RECAP.... the PS3 sells more or less about the same many conosles like the 360 did. BUT (now it comes) when Sony started, all the other consoles had been on the market too. When M$ started, there was no competition.

Microsoft hit below the belt imo lol. I don't think a 100$ price cut will really affect the sales too much. You've also got to think about the pathetic PS3 line up atm. Nintendo could afford a 200$ price cut though. They're actually the only company making money on their console. I wouldn't be surprised if they were still making money after a 200$ cut. The Wii components are all low cost. Sony on the other hand has been taking a loss and with this price cut the loss is even greater. If it drops another 50$ or more I'll definitely pick one up but 499 is still too expensive for a console that doesn't have all that much going for it. I'm a huge PS2 fan not a huge Sony fan.

Read This:

"Sony can cut prices because the company has fixed production problems with a diode used in the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray disk player, said Tretton, who is based in Foster City, California. He declined to discuss costs for the console.

Clearing up the trouble made PlayStation 3 profitable several months ago, giving the company room to cut prices, analyst Doherty said. Microsoft still loses money on each Xbox 360 it sells, he said. "

» @ mr. common sense

trying to persuade someone that including the blu-ray drive is quite hard...mainly becasue people dont think ahead for the future - i'm fine with the PS3 coming out after the 360 - the delay wasnt really a delay because of blu-ray (just europe and other areas of the world) and it wasnt really a delay because no official date had been announced for sony to break - they just realised they needed more time to finalize the cell chip and sort out the heat sink for the console - and im glad that blu-ray is included and the cell chip, because it shows sony has actually created their system - the cell chip is partly theirs, blu-ray is partly theirs and they use their memory stick brand in the console and create their own system software and are great company for producing excellent hardware...what have MS done for their console? they have just created the software..the menus and the marketplace, yea, its great software..but the rest of the box isnt microsoft..proccessor, graphics chip etc. and MS are awful at making hardware..33% failure rate i nthe UK HA!

I rensent anyone saying that the PS3 is the most expensive system. My rebuttal: THE NINTENDO WII is actually the most expensive system. It is running on pretty much the hardware strenght that the old Xbox 1 used to have, plus motion sensing and internet capabilities. (the xbox had a hard drive, and internet capabilities)

YOU WOULD NOT PAY for a last gen, non hard drive xbox simply because they add a motion sensing controller, would you???

Wii owners would.

Nintendo is getting on my nerves. First they sell out and basically say "We can't keep up so we're gonna take the easy way out and make crazy profits." This hurt me because Nintendo was the best and my favorite. Now they are saying stupid stuff just like Sony does. This is a sign of fear. Nintendo knows the only hope it has to stay ahead is the price of the Wii. Their best games will be out in 2007. So the future of the Wii is dim. Microsoft is even worse. They come out a year early with a system that has a 33% failure rate and they taunt Sony and say "They don't have any games." Sorry MS, but Sony has 10x the game you do in the works. And they will be GOOD games. Enjoy your spot right now because you are about to be dethroned by the Wii and then the PS3 soon after. A technically superior system that WORKS and has a 10 year life span with the new movie format blu-ray built in... MS better get working on the 720 with a BD drive, and make sure the system works this time please.

» Missing Big Picture

I just want to add: Aside from the big old flame war right now, you guys forget the most important part of the picture. That's us, the consumers; we are the ones that will benefit from this, as it is the start of a price war. We will be the ones that benefit from the drop in prices, I am all for that. Maybe within another year or so the PS3 will drop another $100, making it $300, I'll definately buy that. As for Microsoft's response to this current drop in price, I can see the Xbox360 Core will cost $200 and I'll probably buy that.

However as for the Nintendo Wii, I would really like to see it succeed but its library of games is not good. I'm only interested in playing Zelda and Metroid. Meanwhile it seems everyone is buying the Nintendo Wii so that they can play games that are 20 or so years old because the current crop of games just isn't that great. Also I'm not a fan of party/kiddie games, lets face it most of us play games by ourselves and we want those games that are exciting. You guys that are rallying for the Nintendo Wii really have to look at the games coming out, Jenga? Dance Dance Revolution? Pokemon? At the current rate of things Nintendo is selling big because of their control scheme alone and not the games, what happens when the controller fad fades?

by WiiCool - 2007-07-10 13:21

The PS3 would drop to 399 (400). As for Wii, as long as people buy it, the games will get better. It will have a good library, as good as re4 is on the wii, I look forward to better games like it, just remember, the Wii uses the most intuitive controls, and it has the most flexible controls schemes of any console now, so I am looking forward to games that can make full usage of it; imagine the concept behind redsteel, except perfected in every way. That's not too far from happening. That is why I bought the Wii.

I don't have HD tvs, so I get by using a vga HD cable. Ps3 doesnt have one, 360 does. I dont have an HDTV, so that does not interest me, nor does the BLU ray because I can't use it. Yes it is great what the PS3 does, I love it, but the price is just so much. I would really have prefered an addon then have it included. By making the price so much, Sony has reversed their image from the nice company that made the ps2 to the greedy company that tries to sell you it's latest media technology... if they did it based on what people voted for, the PS3 would have been 400, and the blu ray Ps3 like 600 to begin with.

» EXCUSE ME?!

I've likely played games longer than most of you punks on this string! You Microsuck and Fony fans really sicken me. You say "REAL" gamers but you likely aren't one. First off, games aren't about super graphics (look at those online flash games) and killing as many creatures as you can. Games are meant to be FUN. The vast majority of PS3 and 360 games are FPSs. Now, there's nothing inheirently wrong with FPSs (I've been playing them since Goldeneye) but there are so many FPSs with NO innovation, no new features, that are pretty much just "cut and paste" Halo. As for the Cell processor, that thing SUCKS!!! I suppose you don't know anything about programing, so I'll explain: Multi-core systems are remarkably difficult to program for. This is the reason that few PC games are multi-core compatable. The Cell processor has 9 cores, the most sophisticated gaming processor (the Intel Core 2 Extreme) only has four. Do the math. By the way, the PS3 and the 360 appeal mostly to PC fans. Honestly, I do not like PC gamers. In their pursuit of hardcore games, they have killed many genres of games and have nearly killed off countless others (namely, my beloved RPGs). And as for the Blu-Ray drive, most consumers CANNOT tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i (regardless of the lies the tv industry has propagated), and I don't believe any format will win. People have finally gained control of how, when, and where they obtain their media (ie downloading). Oh, before you even mention Final Fantasy XIII, FF has been downhill since FFIX, (with the possible exception of XI).

» Things cost MONEY!!!!

Money which I don't have. I can't even afford a

Wii as it is. I would not even pay $100 for a Blu-Ray player out the gate anyway. The technology is far from perfect. With DVDs, the people who purchased $1000 players got screwed badly. The $100-$50 players out today have more features and are better than the first-gen players. Besides, I would not buy a Blu-Ray PLAYER. I've seen it happen before. If Blu-Ray succedes, then you will eventually need a Blu-Ray BURNER. Sony already has a line of BD-RW burners available. The Blu-Ray discs used by Sony for the PS3 are only 50 gig discs (dual-layer). That 200 gig limit is only for the 8 layer disc that Dony is trying to make, By the way, the lenses on your PS3s cannot read more than two layers. Besides, the PS3 only offers video content, not the cool non-movie features the other HD players offer. And I see your comment down there about 2800%. Go back to elementary school. There you'll learn that 2800% of 100 is not 280,000 but in reality 2,800. You devide percents by 100 to find out the true number you're multiplying by.

I meant to say Sony earlier. If I was trying to make fun of the name, I would have thought of something MUCH more clever. Oh, about your 280,000 figure there, that should be 2,800. It is only a ratio of 28 times, not 280,000. If you are upset about me calling you out about that, then consider this: I am COLLEGE-EDUCATED. You obviously failed fourth grade math.

» RE: hah

I hope you realize that Microsoft is going to go overboard with the 720. Every game company did so with their third consoles, Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and I'd say that Microsoft is more likely to go over the top anyway. (Look at Vista. XP is better.) Actually, if Sony had launched a year earlier and Microsoft a year later, then the PS3 would be like our reality's 360 and the 360 would be like our PS3. It's just a huge game of chicken.
