Nintendo UK "locks up" Virtual Console as well

Classic MarioWhile it seems that things are not going perfectly sync for Nintendo's western divisions (or is this a marketing strategy?), Nintendo UK has spoken further about their console's region coding. In a series of contradicting statements, Nintendo of America claims that Wii is region free and Nintendo UK has always maintained that it will be locked.

This time, another spokesman from Nintendo UK re-affirms their division's statement and even included the Virtual Console in their claim. Simply put, the Virtual console like the Wii itself is region-locked according to the spokesperson. As that is a clear statement, we won't be surprised at all should the phone ring and NOA is on the other side saying otherwise.

The Virtual Console supports titles from NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Megadrive and TurboGrafx. Titles arrive at a rate of 10 per month. Nintendo UK adds that RGB and component video cables that fit current pricing models will be released as well. However, they declined to comment on recent rumors that Commodore 64 games will also be hosted by the Virtual Console in the future.

Chances are, UK consoles are region locked because it is more common to import american games because they ususally are released first, and that might be damaging their gaming industry or making it harder to see what game is popular in what country. Although, in the US we sometimes import from Japan(or occasionnaly, the UK), it is less common here so our game industry isn't "threatened" by import games, our consoles will probrally be region free. If this turns out to be the case, then the UK just has to wait for a freeloader type device, or import the whole console from the US, so they can play import games and UK games.

If Nintendo Europe locks their console and other regions don't, they can be assured that people will import the system from other region-free regions. I think all they'd be doing is shooting themselves in the foot, sending the message "You don't want your Wii from here. Go import it instead."

At this point it's all speculation. Not being into importing myself, I can't say whether I think region locking is a big deal for the actual Wii games, but I can't imagine it would make any difference at all for the Virtual Console. I really don't foresee anyone buying an SD card full of virtual console games from somebody in another country.

Nintendo would be stupid to region lock their systems, and they know that----the ds is region free. Why would they go ahead and region lock their system and games? Nintendo UK dont know A think, they are the last to get games, and info. Listen to NOA and Nintendo of japan.
