Nintendo: the Wii appeals to more hardcore gamers than you think |

Most gamers would probably think that the Wii hasn't captured the attention of the "hardcore" gamer market. Nintendo of America executive vice president Cammie Dunaway recently gave out a few figures at the Electronic Gaming Summit which may prove these people wrong.She pointed out that 79 percent of Wii gamers are male, aged over 18 with an average income of US$ 50,000 or more. In addition, half of these individuals clock in five or more hours of gaming a week.
Dunaway pressed on saying that while those who buy the Wii are pretty typical for gamers, others from the same household who also play with it aren't. She cited that 45 percent of the these secondary gamers are female with 38 percent 25 or older. In addition, 65 percent of these gamers play two hours a week while 32 percent log in five or more hours.
So what does this say about the console? Dunaway concluded that what makes the Wii special is not that it appealed to gamers but that it introduced more people to video games and expanded the market:
The real break-through, the real magic of the Wii console is that it brought new consumers into the game.
We in the industry have a choice to make, do we want to appeal to the few or to the masses? Do we want to sell to more people or sell more and more and more to less people? Do we want to be inclusive or do we want to be expansive? At Nintendo we definitely believe in the power of the expanded audience.
This sounds like a good business move on the part of Nintendo. However, it makes one wonder what repercussions this will have on the content being released on video gaming consoles. Will it further expand the number of titles and genres we have now and will it have more developers focusing on developing games for the mass market?

As for the stats, it's nice to see that Nintendo is definitely appealing to the established gamers' market, while expanding the market further. I, for one, am more than satisfied with Nintendo's (and a fair few third parties') catering for us already established gamers.

But it's the Wii that captures my interest most - of all three consoles. The Wiimote just feels like a perfect stand in for mice, and that is what attracts me most for the shooter games that come in. It's also probably why air mice are slowly being adopted today.
I'm hoping they could do more with the controls though, instead of just waggle spam. I have friends who are also avid PC gamers, but they do own Wiis. I don't know their reasons, though, for I cannot speak for them.

lets face it, the soft core and the casual arent keeping up with the news on the latest releases they are happy playing the games they in the bargain bin last christmas.
the casual and soft core gamers just arent as dedicated to the hobby "nor do they spend as much money on games" as we the hard core.
I honestly dont care how you personaly define yourself as a gamer,. if you are keeping up with the news and the release dates of titles that interest you. Then you have a hard core interest in gaming.
weather you are playing "God of Gore" or barbie's pretty pink pony.
The problem is the casual gamer is the guy or gal that doesnt have the passion or the love of the hobby

I think nintenod has realized that casual people are less likely to line nintenods pockets with money.
So now the very terms nintendo has created.

has become unprofitable. Because a great number of true "core gamers, have lost interest in a lot of nintendos shovelware. when I say shovel ware, im talking nintendogs, flash focus. brain age.
To be honest, I dont give a rats ass about anyones personal feelings about the terms ive used, and I honestly dont care if you personaly like brain age, the fact is, those people that do like those titles are the exception not the rule.
so now nintendo is trying to phase out those terms.

No, the wiimote is a horrible substitute for any sort of aiming device. It's basically a light gun. CoD4 did what few shooters have ever done and that's make the console controls perfect for a first person shooter.
I've heard this argument before for the DS as well. It just isn't materializing as you claim.

The Wii remote became living proof that the air mice concept would work. It's not as great as the technology that manufacturers use today, but it held the basic concepts. Later on, the best in peripheral brands made far better innovations.
You don't even need an MX Air to see how it aims. With an open source BW driver and some tools from the Wiimote PC projects at SourceForge, it's easy to make it work on early games.
And better yet, I can even tweak the sensitivity in finer respects than the Wii.

I've been a gamer since I was 5 or 6. A long time ago; you could probably call me a 'hardcore gamer'. As for the Wiimote giving some people poor performance:
1. Upgrade your sensor bar. "SOME" third party bars have better IR LEDs in them.
2. Kill your lights. The average person that has issues with the pointer is because they have 4+ recess lights right above them. Your Wiimote can see those!!! I have 6 of them, point the Wiimote up and it can see six big fat dots! Same with other lights around your TV.
The motion sensing is less precise then the IR tracking and even that is pretty good in itself.

To throw in some experience from playing Metriod Prime: Hunters on the DS, with using the touch screen, I've also been able to pull very accurate shots on that game as well. Granted it will never top the mouse, but it works very well on a handheld itself.

There is nothing wrong with owning a Wii and another console, or owning just a Wii. There's nothing wrong with owning any console, for that matter!
I keep hearing many people say that Nintendo is getting good at marketing, as if selling the Wii is a massive scam they've pulled on millions of people. Read those words carefully. Using common sense, how realistic does that sound? Frankly, you have to be on the same level as people who believe in lizard men and UFOs to think that millions of people could be scammed into buying trash. First of all, the Wii isn't trash. Also, the Wii has already proven itself to be the top dog, contrary to moronic belief (like yours, Mister No Sense).
But don't take my word for it, just look at the millions more sales the Wii has over the 360 and PS3. While I only see 360s and PS3 with people who generally play and are very familiar to video games, I see Wii consoles in the most random places. From nursing homes to preschools to college dorms to my friends' houses. I'd say the Wii is taking the world by storm, hardcore or not.

I have been playing games since the pong console....still own my OG colecovision...
I had a wii and it was sad. the casual market is good and all...the wii is technically a gamecube .5 with different yet awesome controls.
