Nintendo supports U.S. anti-piracy raids |
Ó
It looks like Nintendo's really serious when it comes to stopping piracy. PsPoPPer sent us a tip about Nintendo's support of the anti-piracy measures the U.S. government has in place, after 32 federal search warrants were executed in 16 states. These raids were part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and distribution of illegal modchips for various consoles, including Nintendo's Wii. According to a recent press release given by Nintendo, the company supported the actions by working closely with the Department of Homeland Security in their investigation. To date, this investigation is also the largest of its kind by the U.S. government against game piracy.
Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America's senior director of anti-piracy, had this to say about the issue:
Nintendo and its developers and publishers lost an estimated US$ 762 million in sales in 2006 due to piracy of its products. Nintendo's anti-piracy team works closely with law enforcement officials worldwide to seize mod chips and counterfeit software. Since April, Nintendo has seized more than 91,000 counterfeit Wii discs globally.

C'mon Ninty, you're releasing Metroid Prime 3 in the Europe two months after the US gets it and expect people are going to wait? I guarantee that modchip sellers on whatever auction web site in the Europe will be happy of better sales once you release the MP3 in the US.
