The seven-week gap between the launch of the standalone Wii MotionPlus accessory and the first MotionPlus-supported Nintendo game, Wii Sports Resort, has resulted in a bit of speculation regarding the addition of MotionPlus support to existing Wii games.

Nintendo, however, has confirmed that there is no backwards compatibility in the cards for MotionPlus. According to a Nintendo rep, the device is "only for games that are designed to make use of its abilities", hence there are no plans for patches that will enable MotionPlus support in older games.

» Not feasable.

They couldn't do it even if they wanted to. The Wii is far behind tech-wize, they can't patch games via the internet. The only way they would be able to patch older games would be to add them to the disc in subsequent presses, which would divide the fanbase. (In to which they my have to do disc trades or something of the sort.)

They could just rerelease some older games to have MotionPlus support, but it will end similar to what I said previously, but piss off less people.

» 7 weeks of what?

The idea of everybody rushing to pick-up the latest accessory for the wii, motion plus, with nothing to use it on for 7 weeks is almost laughable. How does a company even consider this idea?!?!?! I'm sure common sense would prevail and they will be released side-by-side. . . you would think?

What other uses could wii motion plus have without any games? I would like to see the proposed ideas on the packaging haha...

Not 100% true, the Wii is capable of "patching games", but none of the older games are capable of add-on content. Some newer games (like GHWT) for the Wii actually do have downloadable content add-ons, so it could technically* be possible to patch games that allowed patches and updates.

Patching and DLC are 2 different things.

» Couple things I'm not clear on...

* If I were to get the Motion Plus and put a larger skin all around it, would I need to remove the MP to play games that don't support it?

* If I don't want to bother getting the MP, would I still be able to play games that support it? (I.e. would future games just support it, or _require_ it?)

Anyone know the answers definitively?

by ISOHaven - 2009-04-16 03:58
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You do not have to remove it to play non MP games.

Nintendo stated that MP games must be able to support non MP controllers as well. Whether that has changed since their initial release info..... not sure. But that was their first word on the subject.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Smooth move Karl! Once again you completely botch the entire scope of the news.

Karl - "and the first MotionPlus-supported Nintendo game, Wii Sports Resort"

Why are you reporting false information?

Read YOUR OWN SOURCE!!!!

Gamespot - "During the seven-week gap between the game bundle and standalone peripheral's launches, only three third-party games that support the peripheral will debut: Sega's Virtua Tennis 2009 and Electronic Arts' Wii versions of Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10."

Obviously one of those three games will be one of the FIRST, not Wii Sports Resort. You make it sound like for those 7 weeks the MP will sit around useless unable to be used.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You're right about one thing. Common sense should prevail. However it has eluded you as well. Had common sense entered your train of thought you would have CHALLENGED this bit of news (for good reason as you pointed out) and at the very least traveled to the source where you would have discovered that within those 7 weeks there will be 3 other MotionPlus games released BEFORE Wii Sports Resort. Karl failed to report this news properly.

NEVER NEVER NEVER take one source of information as fact. That would be the complete opposite of COMMON SENSE.

» not so 337 is right

DLC and Patches are completely different things. Games like GHWT are programmed for DLC, but that does not mean they can be patched. The executable/engine/whatever you want to call it is still ran right from the disc, it just knows where to look for the add on content. The only way Wii games could be patched would be if they are made to specifically on a game by game basis. And to add to that, the only way that could be achieved is if there is some way to have the executable on the Wii's storage or an SD card, where it can me modified.

» false?

Read it again. Are those three games made by Nintendo?

by ISOHaven - 2009-04-16 11:08
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

How about YOU read it again. You didn't say a game MADE BY nintendo. You called it a NINTENDO GAME. I hate to break it to you but EVERY GAME played on the Wii is a NINTENDO GAME. If a person plays NINTENDO that doesn't mean he or she only plays games MADE by NINTENDO.

ody_jay's post is a direct result of your actions.
