Wii modchips used to not work on this model of Wii - Image 1It looks like Nintendo's European branch has started taking notice of the folks who are out to mod or alter their Wiis. A new post on the Nintendo U.K. website warns against the use of modchips to circumvent copy protection.

While we all can probably guess what it says, they didn't hesitate to point out the illegality of using modchips as well as the warranty-voiding properties of using one. Said Nintendo of the unauthorized modding of Wiis for this purpose,

The use of mod chips voids the manufacturer's warranty. In addition, the installation of a mod chip can damage the functionality of a Nintendo console, sometimes rendering it incapable of repair. Mod chips have been adjudicated to be illegal in various countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Most European countries have also already adopted laws prohibiting the circumvention of technological measures for copyright protection. People caught installing or selling mod chips may be subject to criminal charges.

It's probably obvious to anyone who uses modchips, but let this be a warning to you. Nintendo's got their eyes on the modding community, for both good applications of their Wii technology and bad.

.

Mod chips are legal in Australia :). I just hope they don't start trying to ban consoles from online play like MS did with xbox. That is assuming we ever get some online Wii games..

look, it's a jealous ps3 owner, wishing he'd spent all the money on a real system and 4000 games... and a new High Def TV and couch... and a trip to the bahamas with the wife... and paid 3 months of the girlfriend's rent... and the alimony for the ex-wife and kids for the next 8 years... and paid off the mortgage... and France.

wtf?

"Mod chips have been adjudicated to be illegal in various countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong" So they are "determined" to be illegal, but they are not actually illegal?! Its my Wii! If i want to open it and install 20 mod chips, i will if i want!!
by - 2007-04-24 11:08:43
Stupid

Mod chips have been around for so long....maybe if they lower there game prices by half, people may purchase the games. Plus Nintendo has sold millions of Wii consoles that I don't think everyone thinks about opening there Wii and installing a mod chip.... I bought my Wii and if I want to modify it then I will!:P

Get of your couch and go to work! You would have to if this would be YOURS! Maybe it is your Fathers ;) but not yours :P

Stupid

I hate when they make modifying what you own illegal. To make burning games or copying games illegal would make sence but not to open your wii and change things. It's up to the owner. If you buy a pc you can open it and do whatever the hell you want with it...and if you ***** it up so be it. It should be the same for everything. Make the burning or backing up of games illegal, thats all they should be able to do. Anyway...unless your the guy modding everyones wiis, i doubt that you'll get caught.

wii

i have a hi def tv and a wii, and i really have to agree that its not all its made out to be. im planning on buying a ps3 when unreal comes out. saying "shhhh. go back to your ps bankrupcy." just points out that you're probably some kid in high school who needs your parents to buy your stuff for you. $600 is about 30% i what i pay just in bills to live for a month not counting food and gas, and im far from rich. i think its worth it for 5,6 years of entertainment.

Dear Joe

Shut up, you ignorant *****. The Wii has no HD capability.
by - 2007-04-24 16:15:35
terrible

Dear Nintendo: You're not supposed to warn anyone about mod chips. You're supposed to upgrade your console's firmware (if not hardware) in order to prevent anyone using modchips. But well...you didn't invest a single coin into protecting you GameBoy against the usage of rewritable carts and you're blind about the same products for DS. You won 1 million of hk dollars and didn't invest ONE in this, here goes my bet, you won't do anything about mod chips for Wii but "warning" by pointing the obvious. Not long ago Wii's mainboard was remade and, surprise, modchips weren't affected. If this was Sony's key to the success (what I doubt) at least they pretended fighting a little. Poor fans. Not being able to talk trash about Sony and Piracy any more.

not worried

as far as warnings on mod chips all my systems that need or can be modded have been modded as far as games if it is good ill buy it on sale or after price drop ....so far next gen titles do not drop far enough 360 plat titles still to high but is my opinion stop trying to block mods and make games cheaper and better as most games suck. $50 to $60 for a new game you get home and it sucks butt you get to the piont where its not worth it no matter who you are you must have been burnt buying a game one or more times either case modding not goign no where and no reason to bother with warnings ...stop changing crap to stop mod chips put that money in to something needed like better games that goes for all systems so no fans boys should bandwagon this post
