Sony. Nintendo sued by Copper Innovations Group - Image 1The Copper Innovations Group has decided to file a lawsuit against both Nintendo and Sony for copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, the controllers of both the PlayStation 3 and Wii are in violation of a patent that the Copper Innovations Group filed back in 1996.

The patent Copper Innovations filed has a method for wirelessly connecting devices to a system and sorting the input via hardware identification numbers associated with each transmission. If the description is accurate, then the technology does sound similar to that found in the wireless controllers of both the PS3 and Wii.

The company is now seeking damages plus interest, legal fees, as well as an injunction which prevents Sony, Nintendo or any of their agents from infringing on their patent. As of this article's writing, Sony, Nintendo, or Copper Innovations have not given out an official statement regarding this lawsuit.

In the past, the Immersion Corporation filed and won a lawsuit against Sony. This lead to more companies suing Sony about the technology they used in their consoles. It might be good to keep a close eye on this issue since a victory for Copper Innovations could mean another string of lawsuits against gaming companies in the months to come.

So lame. Sony has been using the DualShock design FOREVER, and Nintendo's controllers are completely new. Wth is this? Money hungry idiots looking for more money, that's what.

You didn't read the news, did you?

It's not about the design. It's about the technology inside.

» HUH!!

These systems have both been out for a relativley long time now, have they took apart both systems so that they can find something that is somewhat close to their designs?

I'm assuming they're on about the motion controls since the 360 isn't involved, but no doubt they had a look inside that as well just incase.

People have been well aware of the controls and their workings for a long time now, I don't see why it has took them so long to make an issue of it. Money grabbers?

sorry i overlooked that part, but either way the same remains true, people have known about the workings for ages, why make an issue of it so far down the line. There in it for the money

Whoops. That's what happens when you quickly skim news. >_>

Still, it's so dumb to make a big deal about it so far down the line..

I've still got my case in court, cuz my ancestors invented 6 different sexual positions. We plan on charging every time some one uses one!

Really ? Man now I am not going to bed with a woman without getting worried about a possible sue from you! Damn !!

------

Now, seriously... This is nonsense, they are just a bunch of money-licking parasites >(

» Careful

Hey, careful there, they might sue you for calling them money-licking parasites.

» Pay Attention, People!

"In it for the money"... you people are hilarious. Why shouldn't Copper Innovations stab these two companies for everything they can get?

The Big N and $ony are both in it for the money TOO!! Get over your lame loyalty to a damned faceless company.

If you were part of Copper you'd be suing both these companies for everything your greedy little hands could touch.

Now, before you go off on your petty tangents about how I must be a part of Copper Innovations or that I have no 'love' for gaming... let me just point out that I own both a Wii and a PS3 and they're both remarkable systems.

I just don't give a damn about what happens to the companies that built these machines, that's all.

Let them get stabbed. They could use a little deflating.

by Orlyeh - 2008-01-13 06:04
» why?

"Why shouldn't Copper Innovations stab these two companies for everything they can get?"

maybe because they merely came up with a theoritical idea for technology "lulz, I patent a thing that does a thing in a certain way, MAYBE!" and have not marketed it towards developers and/or hardware manufacturers FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS THAT THEY'VE HELD THE PATENT.

It's a flaw in our legal system that allows people to get rich off of the investment, innovation, and work of other individuals. Too many times these things don't go to court, and the suing party gets a nice big payoff for work they haven't done.

If Copper Innovations Group (sounds like a fishy braintrust of patents just waiting for somebody to put effort into making them) can show that Sony and Nintendo's controllers have somehow hurt their bottom line, fine, but I doubt it's anywhere near that point.

by lyoth - 2008-01-13 06:55
» why not microsoft

why not microsoft. cause they got wireless controller also.

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-13 07:07
» ok...

Dosnt almost every signle wireless devise use that method..?

And if it does then they can sue logic tech, and all third party companies also.

There a bunch of money hungry people, because a lot of things use this technology now a days.

I bet people make these patents just to sue people in the future.

See your a dumbass

"If you were part of Copper you'd be suing both these companies for everything your greedy little hands could touch"

It sounds more like an opinion of what you'd do in the situation. Im not a dumbass who would make a patent 10 YEARS AGO, then try and say its my idea when I havent even put any work into it.

Its about the stupid way that you can sue someone off of an idea and actually get money for nothing you did.

So I think you should pay attention to exactly what people are complaining about, we could give 2 5hits about if the two compainies get sued, its about the idea of sueing someone for every little thing.

"This is illegal, you know."

by Woden501 - 2008-01-13 09:42
» Its proprietary

Microsoft's controllers are their own design, this is why there aren't any third party wireless 360 controllers, and they apparently didn't have their controllers communicate to their systems that way.

by Kingofdaberbz - 2008-01-14 05:37
» Copper CO. is right

If I patented something and a company used my patent product design,I would sue too.Just like when ns,sy n m$ stole that rumble feature n didn't compensate the company who patented the product years b4.all these companies are greedy n want our money if they stole my design i would def seek payment. these are multi billion dollar companies, they don't care if they steal a design or violate a patent as long as they make money.

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-14 07:57
» I say

Patent's shouldnt even exist. How the hell can you mark an idea over ten years ago and just cause someone happens to have a similar product, and that means you get paid even if you didnt even try working on the damn thing?? Psh get the ***** outa here..

If you make a patent I think you should only be able to use it in one year at most.

by Woden501 - 2008-01-17 03:28
» Eclipze

Yeah I mostly agree with that, but rather than having it expire within a year it should be made so that you have to make progress on it within say a year of the initial submission. Then every year after that you have to continue to make improvements or the patent expires.
