Next-Gen Star Wars Sneak Peek?

What we have here is supposed to be a pre-visualization video for the next-gen Star Wars game. Now, don't go ga-ga all over this one just yet. Remember, the operative word here is "supposed". No news yet on whether or not this is authentic. This is most likely not real-time either. If it turns out to be real, though, then fans are in for quite a treat.

Anyway, enjoy the video and see all the nice little Stormtroopers flying around in the air. Heh, the Empire really should just learn and give them some flying lessons or something. Or maybe they could start some kind of aerial ballet troupe. That'd be a good source of income for when they retire from active duty, although we somehow doubt that Stormtroopers ever reach retirement age.

where's the next gen?

To me it looked like something the Xbox and PS2 can do (graphically).

The physics were rad, though, so don't get me wrong.

I actually felt kinda sorry for that last dude... I mean, he was just doing his job, probably has a wife, a pile of kids and a mortgage...... NM.

The video is like 480 x 320, and the image quality itself in even lower resolution. You can't really judge its graphics until a high-res version comes out.

I'm not convinced in the slightest that the engine is capable of that in-game, show us someone playing, complete with HUD and everything.

I kind of agree with #4, some parts of the video dont really look "next-gen" but most of the video looks pretty impressive.

Am I the only person who thinks this is fake? It seems like if it was truly Lucas Arts, they would want to show a variety of killing methods..i.e. lightsabers, pistols and using the force, as a way to demonstrate the dynamics of the game.

Seemed kinda like a senior year project at a CGI college to me. The arena style open area. Next gen can handle miles of city blocks..so can current gen for that matter..

Time will tell.

The video is on the Star Wars website, but you have to join Hyperspace, the Star Wars Fan Club to view it. The little yellow logo in the bottom right of the vid is the Hyperspace logo.

You can find it here: http://www.starwars.com/hyperspace/tease.html?tPage=/hyperspace/member/video/forcepreviz.html

absolutely none of that was even close to any kind of gameplay. It was all pre-rendered. I love obvious bullshot. It's like smiling after someone slaps you on the face.

Its part of a real-time demo shown at E3 - behind closed doors of the upcoming Star Wars: Force Unleashed for PS3 (come end of 2007/start of 2008)

You can read more about it here..

Hey, jedis sure can do that, but what the heck. Where was all the lightsaber action? And, is it REALLY for PS3? But, Lucas said something about Wii and SW some time ago, didn't he?

too good to be on the wii remember the graphics on the wii are only gonna be a bit better then the gamecubes and im pretty sure that thats not on the ps2 and xbox cuz ive seen xbox star wars games and theyre like blocky round still but either way that was on the ps3 or 360 most likeley it was on the 360 (damn 360 hate it)

i think this is was rendered for the ps3 and pc. only the ps3 has a onboard hardware physics processor and it looks like this game is taking full advantage of it.

If it does go to the 360 or wii, expect the physics and graphics to be *****tier and toned down.

PS3 FTW!!

i remember a short while back there was an article on lucas arts next gen physics engine which show all the character models behaving exactly like this. so this does look like this is the real deal

looks to me like they might be working on another jedi academy game. the first part of the video with the girl looked like it could be in-game. the second part seemed pre rendered. it all looks fun though. next gen star wars, you just gotta love it.

# the PS3Guest 2006-07-23 12:13
has NO special physics hardware (like ageias physx) in it, nor is the PS3 fast enought to give the full potential of a physx card.

BTW: for the physics shown in this Starwars video you dont need a special hardware. (/me thinks of Cellfactor)

# dumbGuest 2006-07-23 15:07
i think it looks dumb. the only reason is that when playing starwars games i like using the lightsaber, and it looks like the people in the video only used 'the force'.

Correct but only partially, idiot. The Cell which is in the PS3 has more than enough throughput to take advantage of a physics card. Technically a physics CARD which is at best PCI-133 based would be ridiculously slow for the PS3. Oh and yeah you don't need any special hardware for physics calculations, heck I can even do physic calculations with a pencil and a piece of paper. What I'm getting at is its just math, dork... oh did you know that the CELL in the PS3 has 7 vector processing units--and vector to put it short refers to geometry and math--these vector units are also optimized for single-precision floating point math operations, considering that usually only scientists bother with double-precision single is good enough for videogames.

BTW: So guess what special physics hardware is? an extra processor to reduce the load on the "main" processor, and probably more vector based than a general cpu.

P.S. even simplified vector processors that are monster quick at math are still processors and can calcutate anything that the compiler will allow you code through not quite as quick as your general CPU; like the PPU in the CELL.

P.S. BTW: check out this article

http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~samw/projects/cell/CF06.pdf

don't forget that they are using a simulation of CELL however this pretty much the exact same thing that other researchers have found.

That was the lamest fan flick I've ever seen. Kids should stay away from platic lightsabers and explostives be... wait, that was made by a LUCAS company.... is everyone realizing a consistantcy in LucasArts bull*****tery? That nothing they've done has really changed since Dark Forces and Tie Fighter? Star Wars isn't about a bunch of *****ing Jedi waving around lightsabers in impractical situations. f8ck, if they made a 50 dollar skill game where you try to shoot before Greedo, I'd BUY THAT! At least it isn't Jedi bull*****. Give me another Hoth level. At least it didn't have Jedi but men with real *****ing guns fighting for a cause.

Will you suck *****?" "Two thousand against ten?" - the veteran shouted. "No! We will run - and keep our virginity!" "Yes!" Wallace shouted back. "Fight and you may die. Run and you will live at least awhile. And raping in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell

our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take our virginity!"

in the article posted by #14, it clearly states "The answer, in the simplest terms, is pretty much what you'd expect -- it's a new Star Wars game slated for multiple next-generation systems that should appear sometime in the future (2007/ 2008 or so)."

OMG, why do you have to be so rude. 24 makes quite a valid point and doesnt deserve to be called names. Now lets see , First i love how you say this card ageias physx would be to slow for a PS3. Well your argument is about the bus and nothing more. You try to sound smart, but failed. Sadly you are one of the masses of fanboys that need the ps3 to be the second coming, and you will defend it blindly using released specs and some article about the cell processor.

FFS, wait untill the product is out, its all just rumors.

And ill say again kids

# THE video is realMGSROCKS1 2006-07-26 17:11
They had an article about this at in July's issue of Game Informer. They said the pre-rendered video was shown behind doors at E3. The only thing real about it is the physics used in the game. Thats how every object reacts in the enviroment.

Look, I don't know anything about CPU and whats not, but isn't the PS3 more than capable of producing unbelievebly smar AI and realistic pysics? Because for MGS2: Sons of Liberty, Kojima said they used 30% of the emotion engine for the AI, and thats what basically floored me, and everyone at 2000's E3. If they are that smart using only 30% of the emotion engine, how smart do you think the AI will be in MGS4?
