New Wii consoles from Japan are unmodabble?

Modded Wii - Image 1There are some rumors going around that the latest batch of Nintendo Wiis coming out of Japan will be unmoddable. Now, we say rumors because unless we get more reports on the said batch or get news from Nintendo Company Ltd., we can't confirm it.

The Japanese version is said to have 3-pins physically cut from a surface-mounted IC, thus making it unmoddable. Now, just for those who choose to act on this, it's said that there are still some moddable units available in 188 and Golden (we're assuming these are in Hong Kong).

If you're in the area and want a moddable Wii for yourself, you better move pretty quickly since everyone's going to be gunning for those units. The Wii NTSC-U hasn't undergone the change yet but if it proves to be an efficient way of stopping pirates, then it could be heading our way.

This should be of no concern for those who only play licensed original games (like we do) but those who insist on playing pirated games may be in for some problems. We also came across the picture of the said IC Chip with the 3 pins cut so it's up to you if you decide to put stock in this. More on this as more information comes up.

» Effective but simple?

This is an effective way to stop pirating however, i'd expect modder to get passed this quite easily :)

» so what

it's not like there is a way to stop piracy... especially not for a simple console like the wii, it's the pirate's perfect console (island).

Hmmm.... Bad news, a consoles longevity is usually determined by 3rd party support. The PS1 and PS2 survived with the help of 3rd party commercial game makers, the PSP is still on track thanks to many unofficial mods (and, of course, piracy), and in these days when user-created content is big, a moddable console has an inherent advantage.

I don't care much for piracy on the wii, but I want to be able to utilize my hardware to 100%. A car maker would perhaps recommend me not to drive off-road, but if I wanted to, the car wouldn't suddenly stop and refuse to leave the road. Some day, some smart person will release a very nice/funny/useful software for the Wii, and I want to be able to use that.

What I think Nintendo really wants to kill is s.outh east asia piracy, where people actually PAY the pirates for the service, and many people buy pirated games unaware. It just sucks that we europeans/japanese/americans have to suffer because of it ^_^
