Mario Kart Wii - Image 1

New details and a kartload of screenshots about everyone's favorite racer that's cruising into the Nintendo Wii come this holiday season in this news update about Mario Kart Wii. We get you the skinny about what's new about the game that has Mario and his friends tearing it up on the track, with more than a handful of weapons available for that last-minute, photo-finish sabotage.

So what's the latest about Mario Kart Wii? A whole lot, actually. Not only is it confirmed that the Jump feature is back - that handy little button press that let us boost around corners, and unfortunately was removed in Double Dash - but also, the fact that massive online multiplayer races are also going to be a viable game mode. That's right - prove your Mario Kart-ing supremacy from across continents will not only be possible, but very easily managed.

Here's the full list of details, for your reading pleasure:
  • Bigger, better, prettier tracks
  • The Jump Button is back
  • 12 Players can race simultaneously online
  • Shortcuts. Lots of shortcuts.
  • Mid-air stunts to be a factor
  • Tracks from Mario Kart: Double Dash to be included
Not a very long list, but certainly very meaty. And the batch of screenshots we've got for you are even meatier - as well as revealing something that could be good or bad news for those looking to tear it up online. If you notice in some of the screenshots, the blue sparks that appear when you drift is back - which could probably mean the return of the gamebreaking racing maneuver known as 'snaking'.

While snaking in itself is quite a difficult trick to nail down, it certainly lends to some pretty one-sided races, with it being able to provide almost unlimited boosts if used properly. Here's hoping Nintendo's done something to balance it out. Updates as we get them, and in the meantime enjoy the screenshots!

Im already begining to like this game...

I really like the "Clean" look of this game. Unlike Mario Kart Double Dash that had a lot of C-R-A-P on the screen with the 2 items all all that mumbo jumbo. This game looks more interesting.

Let's hope Friends Code are not Region Locked

Hope they will unlock Worlwide play, even if it's only with friends code. I'm still pissed it ain't working on Strikers Charged.

hm

game looks like crap ... sry but it looks just like dd( low detail textures)/ds( low color contrast) mix, no cool effects like in zelda and no improoved shading like in galaxy, i thaughed they could do more with the wii, graphic wise, but again this game will be nr1/2 on wii for years in online gaming btw : hope f-zero is on the way for late 2008/2009 release, i like it more than mario kart :((

Innovation

Since, Nintendo is using DVD storage media now, I hope they really expand the game. You know 40 or so unique courses would be nice. Maybe even courses that take 30 minutes to finish from beginning to end in one big lap, like some of the ones First Need for Speed from Road and Track. Courses so long that they are broken down into multiple parts. Weather conditions, ice, snow, sand, light rain, downpours, hurricanes, sleet, tornadoes which are fully customizable would and the like would be awesome. You know its kind of getting boring of every Mario Kart since the SNES having slight variations of only 20 tracks and 4 battle maps. You Know I really loved the whole world aspect of Test Drive Unlimited and that was done on the PS2? Anyone agree we me here that Mario Kart Wii needs and definitely can be greatly expanded?

What's wrong with Double Dash?

Personally, Double Dash is my favorite Mario Kart, because it has the best replay value and multiplayer. I enjoyed the two-driver aspect of the game; it really mixed it up to make it more fun than it would have been with just one driver. I didn't enjoy the DS Mario Kart very much because of the way you could only get a decent item if you were in last place and had no hope of winning. I hope the balancing of items is better in this one.

the blue sparks never left. you had to move the control stick back and forth to use it in double dash.

mario kart wii

Hey iraETodium why don't you go buy a 360 or ps3 instead if you want good looking crap games, because they just basically started working on this game.

Snaking

If no d-pad is to be used during the controls then how would snaking be pulled off? I don't think it can... maybe the new controls balance that out in such a respect. On the other hand, drifting corners in general should be awkward. Hmm, guess well just have to wait and see.

blah

everyone hated double dash...i loved being able to chose my 2 fav mario characters! and being able to have 2 items was the best~!!
