New details revealed on Xbox 360 failure rates; percentage not just about red rings

If you've been following the deal with SquareTrade and Microsoft a few weeks back, you'd know that Microsoft has pretty much reacted in quite the negative fashion toward SquareTrade revealing the Xbox 360's failure rate ( that is, 16.4%, the highest among all three consoles). Now, in this update of the matter, we find out the exact numbers. Brace for some math, this is gonna get bloody.

So, to the figures: SquareTrade's actual sample size - the warranties purchased - is 1040. The claims weighed in at around 171. The claims make up 16% of the sample size, with a little bit of calculator magic. Some 60% of the claims were found to be of the infamous Red Ring of Death - but what about the remaining 40% of the claims?

It turns out that they were made up of other malfunctions - such as disc read errors, video card failures, hard drive freezes, power issues, and disc tray malfunctions, to name a few. Ouch.

Where does this leave the typical Xbox 360 owner, though? Well, we're not quite sure, but the new report does say that the findings were the result of keeping track of Xbox 360s ten months after the warranty purchase - and the longer an Xbox 360 goes without failing, the higher the chances of it to fail in the near future. At the very least, though, we have Microsoft's three-year warranty extension to fall back on.

So in fairness to xbox 360 the test subjects were at least 10 months old.

That means that any improvements made in this period have been ignored.

Possible smaller dys les heat better heat dissapation etc etc.

Without starting a flamewar I can only say that MS are quite right to get p**ssed

off with such a report as this is an untrue prognosis of the actual failure rate.

That the newer 360,s are still failing is of concern but to publish 16% failure rate is a manipulation of the relevant facts.

At least I got the ring of death and they are going to fix it for free almost 2 and a half years after I bought it. But I have been very lucky compared to most other 360 owners that I know. Other than the faulty original design, I think the main problem with the 360 is that they are made in Mexico with cheap, untrained labor while the PS3 and Wii are both made in Japan with higher paid, skilled workers. Three of the people I know had non-ring of death problems with their 360s and that is just the result of bad manufacturing. As long as they keep building them in Mexico this is going to continue.

I didnt want people to think I was some backward fanyboy or ps3 biased. around november of 07 I bought a premium sku, on febuary 2nd it developed ***** read errors. since I had bought the extended warranty my local electronics outlet refunded me for my 360, I then paid the extra and got an elite unit, it red ringed within two weeks. I decided to take it back and get a ps3 this time. Dont get me wrong, I like the 360. but im not a rich man. I cant afford to have a console that's fated to break down. and I realize I could have just sent it back to microsoft and they would have fixed it for free. but im a gamer, I paid money to be able to play game. not sit and wait and wait for something to be fixed that shouldnt have broken down to begin with :(

I hope my ps3 does better. I'm not here to diss the 360. I'm a fan of the games it had. I had oblivion, halo3,eternal sonata, sonic, DOA4,lost planet,and viva penata.. I loved them all., so im not some biased ps3 fan boy. I just dont want to have to wait to play a game on a console that shoulndt have broken down that soon.

On the flip side. about the ps3. just to please the 360 fans here. no.. PSN doesnt even come close to offering what XBL had to offer. so im not here to compatre consoles and say whats best. all i'm saying is I spent money I went out and worked at my job for, just so I could play a game when I wanted too. and waiting for a four month old console to be fixed. just wasnt something that seemed "fair' to me. so I opted for a ps3 and I hope i have better luck with it.

Yo Shady, lets at least hope that MS finally read a comment as yours.

I would expect that there are many gamers out there that may well have done the same as yourself.

I am in agreement that gamers want to play and when required to sit and wait the only option is no games or go PS3.
