Netflix - Image 1They wouldn't say which hardware their service will be coming to, but it sure did wonders for their stocks. Netflix just sent out word Friday that they will be offering their movie streaming service soon through a device "owned by a large number of consumers."

Now, speculations are running high as to what device this is, setting their sights on either the Wii or the PS3. It wouldn't be surprising considering how their inclusion in the array of Xbox Live services on the Xbox 360 added in some 2.4 million subscribers to Netflix's account since September of 2008. This also comes in the heels of Netflix's CEO back in September, saying that they would want to bring movie streaming to the PS3 and Wii "eventually."

Whichever console this may be - if it is indeed for a console (it may be Zune or iPod for all we know), it is posited to pull in some 900,000 to 1.2 million new customers just for this fourth quarter alone.

Netflix is also said to be looking at bringing their service to foreign territories come next year. We'll keep you posted on this. For now, we're tagging it as rumor, and Netflix is enjoying the high rally of their stocks (as high as US$ 57.50 before settling in at US$ 54,16 in afternoon trading).

Since the PS3 has a web browser and with a rapidly increasing consumer base, it would make a lot of sense for Netflix to take advantage of the PS3 to lure more consumers. If so, Sony will have to rethink their pricing scheme and hopefully add a reasonable subscription service for movies.

Wii needs something to this extent if they want that great "family console" market to stay with them for more than just gaming.

This means that the instant view service will be coming to mac computers. Netflix has been improving on their streaming service, trying to get it to work with more types of browsers with different or fewer plugins. Really, they are missing out on an equally large market share, maybe larger, by ignoring mac users then they could get by expanding to another console.

I'm not sure if it is the PS3 or not. It could be the Wii because it has a much larger install base and the chances are the profits are bigger. But then again the PS3 users are more likely to use the service than the Wii owners since the kids can't make contracts with netflix because of the age.

Additionally, The PS3 is HD capable, the Wii is NOT.

my bets:

60 to 30 to 10 percent.

60 percent that it is coming to PS3.

30 percent that it is coming to Wii.

10 percent that it is coming to BOTH.

Personally, I hope PS3 is the target. Of the Wii and PS3, it makes most sense. (Heck, if it's PS3 that might even mean, be inference, the PSP as well.) As Silver-Tiger states, it would seem logical that they'd want to attach to a device that can do HD. But, perhaps more importantly: one with ample storage space. This is where I think even iPhone wouldn't be an ideal target platform. At the end of the day, I could *personally* care less, as I don't buy into the "value" of paying someone a monthly subscription fee when I'm not a frequent renter. But, for the health of the PS3 platform, this would be a nice add ... and removal of a unique feather from 360's cap.

I do have Netflix. Netflix is a good deal for anyone. I rent blu-ray movies through Netflix and I also have a PC hooked up to my hdtv that I use to stream Netflix movies from time to time. I think Sony should take a lesson from Netflix. For the cost of 3 or 4 Playstation Video Store movie rentals, that already pays for a month of Netflix where I get 3 movies in the mail at a time and unlimited streaming and can send the 3 movies back and receive 3 more on my list several times each month.

Why bring it to the PS3 when it already has a video service. Sony wouldn't allow it unless it is a partnership. Why bring it to the Wii when it has no storage and the power of a book to run anything. The quote is a device owned by loads of people. Doesn't even say console or phone or anything. It could be calculators, or inbuilt netflix tv's or umbrella handles for all i care. If you want a netflix subscription you can get one now. Why wait. It's all just advertising in the end. It's not new because the PS3 gets it now rather than one year ago..... Ok rant over. I'm off to Blockbuster to rent some Blu-rays.

...because it is a better deal than the Playstation Video Store. If Sony gave us a subscription service like Netflix for downloads, then it would be worth it. Every since the Playstation Video Store has been out, I have downloaded maybe a few movies. Netflix gives streaming movies and several movies on disc monthly for a low flat rate.
