Rumor - Netflix coming to PS3 and Wii - Image 1

The Xbox 360's been enjoying Netflix for some time now, and it's always been hoped that the service will eventually come to the PlayStation 3 too. Now the rumor mill is churning out new info that this might happen after all. Not only that, it might even come to the Wii as well.

Rumors that it will come to the Wii and the PS3 started when new surveys from Netflix started making the rounds. The surveys asked customers whether they want to see the service become available for the platforms. The survey describes the Netflix service for both platforms to require a "Netflix Instant Streaming Disc" worth US$ 9.99.

A separate disc to support the service would make sense since Sony might be hesitant to give first-party support to the service with a firmware update, considering they have their own video service, and Nintendo's much too involved with first-party services to offer their own support.

Early April Fool's prank, or do we actually have something to look forward to here?

^-^

I hope this comes true, it would be a great addition to the PS3 or... the wii...

Well I took surveys

and I swear all of them had don't reveal this to the general public or something similar -.- I don't know why but I stopped receiving new surveys and I'm so close to my $50 gamestop gift card :(

well wtf

i think a "streaming disc" kind of defeats the purpose. The whole convenience of being able to watch a movie without having to put in a disc is nice...

awsome if true!

It will be awsome if this is true!! Cause when I move out into a Appartment this will be awsome for me since I already have a PS3 and a PC. Just need to get my other eletronics to be ready for my moving day :D

Interesting but...

Wouldn't the PS3 and the Wii need a firmware update anyway so this disc could run unsigned code in order to stream the movies? Unless it would stream directly through the browser, but I still don't understand how it would work. I'm pretty sure there would still have to be an update allowing the disc to stream the media.

Hmm

Maybe 2.7 has more in store for us than we previously thought.

Would think it would work like a Game

@DiscoStew592: I would think it would be possible to create any kind of software as long as you have a PS3 Dev kit, and then get Sony's stamp of approval (licensing). It would be kind of odd to launch the service like a game (complete with the PS3 logo and trademark ringing sound), but I would think it could work. .....That being said, I'm going to peg this as "FAKE". --I seem to recall that the big news when NXE and Netflix came out for Xbox was that Sony pulled all their movies, because the Netflix contract was exclusive with Microsoft. So, unless that contract was only for 6 months, I don't think Netflix is coming to either PS3 or Wii anytime soon (by any means of launching it).

So?

Netflix? Bah! The Pirate Bay is the only way to go for movies.

umm

ps3 already has a rental service, is there that big of a difference? does 360 having netflix make it a good gaming system? i mean most gamers get their movies for free, n if they really like it they buy the blu ray... example Dark knight... ppl saw that in theaters, downloaded the torrents like crazy, n the blu ray still sold so many copies... i dont understand the point of netflix. maybe its just me? but i think its pointless

stream

you can stream movies automatically without putting in a disc or waiting for it to download.

Is it really that difficult to start the downlaod an hour before you plan on watching it? You could do it using Remote Play.

A disc doesn't make sense

The PS3 and wii already have a web browser, why won't Netflix just make a web format compatible like other sites do.

.....

the PS3 already has a video service. why would they have netflix? people don't think at all.

yea

It would be another advantage lost from 360 on PS3. Although that's a good thing cause it makes both consoles better in the end. But I'm just not going to believe this yet since it's rumor. I'd love to see a blockbuster service if the netflix doesn't happen.

,,,

Would be nice if us Ps3 peoples in Europe can have the video services.

Uhm, it's an added benefit

Being a Netflix customer, this would be awesome for me. My PS3 is connected to a projector and he ability to watch netflix movies, unlimited, for no additional charge beyond a one time $9.99 purchase is great. I currently have a PC connected to another TV in my house just for this service, but on a bigger screen, that would be sweet. But I'll believe it when I see it. The PS3 video service has a lot to be desired. 1. It's not free 2. You have to wait for the download to complete. Sometimes I just want to sit and watch a movie instantly. For me, instant gratification is everything. Life's too short to wait for progress bars.
