Virtual Console - Image 1

Mystery's afoot in the Nintendo Japan's Virtual Console website, and it's certainly one that's literally begging to be solved. No, it's not what the squiggly characters of hiragana and katakana on the site actually mean (we've given up, seeing as none of us here at QJ can speak, read or write nihongo), but another language-friendly mystery entirely. It's the blank slot next to the Neo Geo icon, as pictured in the image above this article.

What's wrong about an empty slot, you ask? This means that there's another console that the Wii's retro-loving Virtual Console will be emulating, and just what console it is, Nintendo's keeping mum about it. While it could be just a placeholder image to keep things tidy, we can't help but speculate that it's going to be an entirely-new console. After all, with the Neo-Geo's addition, anything is possible.

So what do you think could fill that slot, dear readers? The Jaguar? The Sega Saturn? Maybe even the Sega Dreamcast? We can only hope that it's one of those, but with almost all the other consoles emulated, whatever Nintendo picks to be in that slot will be a winner for sure. Updates as we get them.

Dreamcast

That would be so awesome if a DC emulator came out for the Wii. You would need a HDD connected to the Wii or maybe they can play strait from a disc if thats possible.

w00t

this is going to be the gameboy channel like they said in EDGE, teh best UK gaming magazine. Nintendo told them that a gameboy emu on wii was going to be launched before the end of the consoles life.

Please...

Please make it something non-Jaguar. Make it the Saturn. They could announce SD card support for games and Saturn games at the same time.

yeah

if you look at the page, the MSX is already listed, so that can't be it.

what I'd like to see...

it'd be cool if they just made channels that would allow you to play old disc-based system games like the Sega CD, Saturn, or 3DO from the original discs. I don't mean to download the games (if they don't make a HDD or allow them to play off SD cards, then that would be unrealistic anyway), I mean to let you play your old discs in the system itself. I'd pay $20 or so to play my Sega CD games on the Wii. Hell, I'd pay upwards of $50 to be able to play my Saturn games on there, too. One fee for the channel (since it'd basically be an emulator)... Of course, that too is unrealistic since only Nintendo and probably Sega (or whoever made whichever system in question) would be the ones making the money, and not the individual game developers. So that's probably not ever going to happen. But it'd be cool. For those hoping for a DC emu for it, don't hold your breath. It'd be cool, yeah. But come on...
