Nintendo's Wii next-gen console - Image 1Nintendo's Wii console is cornering more than its fair share of the video game market. However, the company's other rivals such as Sony and Microsoft aren't the only victims left in the bestselling console's wake.

Despite the company's continued release of its popular line of arcade games, Namco Bandai noted huge losses from shares during its second consecutive session last Thursday. Nearly one-fifth of the stock from the company's arcade holdings were lost during its second consecutive session last Thursday.

The reason behind this was due to the fact that kids in Japan would much rather spend their time home playing on their consoles rather than go to the malls and play games on the arcades.

Company spokesman Yuji Machida explained this by saying: "A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home". With the Wii's successful sales last Christmas, consumers now prefer to invest their money on hardware or software for the console instead.

Sega Sammy Holdings, another arcade operator, plans to close around 100 of its arcades due to falling stocks as well.

yeah did no one expect this?!? I think it sucks that namcos and other peoples arcades are beginning to lose profits....a wii would pay for its self if u play arcades alot i mean u buy a wii 250 if ur lucky and games 50 dollars.....so yeah an arcade could be cheaper but arcade games are not really full fledge games (usually not...) so the obvious choice overall is the wii.....but maybe Arcade makers can decrease price or make them do things the wii cant...

They're blaming the Wii for the decline of arcades? That began in the mid '90s when consoles started to have the same graphical quality as in the arcades.

to be fair, it started in the '80s, although it wasn't until the '90s that it really started to hit rock bottom. But that was in the US. In Japan, arcades still remained pretty strong. So while this article seems like it should be 20 years old, it's happening on the other side of the world where arcades are still a fairly big deal.

Yep, I totally agree with this. Arcades in Japan are usually testing grounds for franchise titles they want to follow up on the consoles. It would only be natural for them to start losing money when you've got arcade buildings five or six storeys tall with nobody visiting them anymore.
